What is actually illegal and what is advised against?

Struggling to find a straight answer to this. For example, I know that indoor mixing is against the law in tiers 2 and 3 except for support bubbles, caring etc. And that it is against the law for hospitality to be open in tier 3, or to have a wedding with 50 people. But for example with travel from tier 3 to tier 2, is says it is "advised against". I don't know whether than means it is illegal or not.

BTW this is not me trying to circumvent the rules but I honestly don't know right now what is actually not permitted in law vs what is merely "guidance". Anyone else?

@Mousehole10 and @AcornAutumn yes, she lives alone. She’s 87. She was coping quite well until recently but in the last few weeks she has been very down. I usually live overseas, and am self isolating till next week. I would bring her up to us for Christmas but she doesn’t want to travel and struggles with our stairs. When the weather is better I might bring her out to stay with me for a few weeks. She is desperate to go out shopping or for lunch when I visit, but if Berks in tier 3, all the restaurants will be shut, and I don’t think we should go to Oxfordshire (she is near the county boundary) to a restaurant, as that is tier 2? Sorry to sound dim.

Okay so she can have you as her support bubble of neither of you are in one already. That will mean you are classed as one household so can travel to each other and stay in each others houses like normal. As she is in tier 3 you will also need to adhere to tier 3 rules if you form a support bubble, i.e. treat it as if you are also in tier 3. That means no eating inside restaurants or pubs, no mixing with others inside anywhere or outside in private gardens or cafes/pubs. So no you couldn't eat at a restaurant in Oxfordshire or anywhere else.

That was @MrsSchadenfreude

Can a family of 3 stay with their bubble (parents) in Scotland overnight if both in tier 2? I’ve seen Nicola Sturgeon recommends day trips only but is this advice only- both parties have isolated for different reasons

Surrey into T3, but not Waverley, which is a large part of South West Surrey. I know a few people who have lunch and dinner reservations for Xmas in Waverley, rightly or wrongly they have no intention of cancelling. So much interaction between these ares, the borders of several boroughs all converge right here, and everyone works, shops, and goes to school across all the boroughs.

It’s guidance, not law, about travel to another tier for restaurants.
In England- don’t know about the others.

Didn’t realise Oxfordshire was tier 2.

@MrsSchadenfreude Yes, make a bubble with her.
I am bubbled with my parents who are in Tier 3 two and a half hours away from me. I have been doing the round trip regularly to meet them outdoors (working in a school, I am too much of a risk to them if I went indoors) but we are all currently isolating to be able to meet indoors at Christmas.
My visits make such a difference to their mood and I can stock them up with meals etc too.

What sort of bubble have you got? Is it an official support bubble or is it a childcare bubble?
MrsSchadenfreude · 18/12/2020 04:35

Thank you @Mousehole10!

Recommended is not law just advice, I believe Scotland is using the same legal framework as England for Christmas apart from there is a limit of 8? excluding children under 12 for numbers so 5 days, 23-27th with overnight stays allowed under law but advised against.
VirtualLearning · 18/12/2020 18:41

Ours would be more just a family bubble- parents over 70 and we haven’t had a bubble more locally as been theirs.

VirtualLearning · 18/12/2020 18:42

Thank you redrivershore we easily meet that and personally feel comfortable as all isolating fully as a precaution before meet
