Just that.

I've never hated any politicians so much

Sorry if this has been mentioned but don't have time to RTFT but this was mentioned on Radio 4 this morning. They didn't just let the government minister get away with their soundbites completely although I'd have given them a much harder time. They didn't ask 'why no masks' in schools - when they're needed everywhere else for example.

But the journalist interviewing did push back on the 'kids only get it mildly' pointing out that parents and teachers don't. Also pushed back on the 'community levels are rising' saying that secondary age children have highest levels of infection.

The minister came across as reading from a script that made no sense and being completely unwilling to deviate from it and actually answer the questions asked. I was raging.

houseinthesnow · 15/12/2020 09:55

I support teachers being vaccinated as a matter of priority.

houseinthesnow · 15/12/2020 09:57

But when you look at the stats, the numbers of people that are seriously ill at working age is tiny and just a few isolated cases. The most likely people to die or be hospitalised is still the over 85's category, I don't know about you but I don't know many teachers that are over 85.

I would put the teachers to the top of the list just to shut up the unions

toolatetooearly · 15/12/2020 10:03

Doesn't happen often, but I actually agree with the government on this one

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 15/12/2020 10:03

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

Isn’t it Germany or Holland that have closed their schools for 5 weeks?

British exceptionalism again.

I think we will all find that after Christmas are schools will be closed until end of January. Worst case scenario possibly won't open again until after Easter. The current bun fight going on will now set the narrative for what will happen after Christmas. Also the possible or inevitable depending on your view point disastrous figures then.
houseinthesnow · 15/12/2020 10:06

Nope, the schools will reopen as normal in January. We will go back into a tier system after christmas, and not a single tier covers the closure of schools or workplaces, and quite right too.

houseinthesnow · 15/12/2020 10:07

I imagine the government will cancel the christmas plans over the five days, rather than risk schools not reopening.

Thank goodness for the vaccine hey! Not much longer to tolerate this nonsense.

No this isn’t going to happen. Why do you think it is?

houseinthesnow · 15/12/2020 10:13

Anyone that cares about their child's education and mental health should be supporting the government vocally and wholeheartedly on this one.

They are 100% right. Schools need to remain open.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/12/2020 10:16

Houses the snow.

My teen is fucked mentally. In out, in out. She’s in a gcse year. Wants to work and do well, scared to go to school in case she brings it home. It’s a fucking mess.

And mental health amongst teens improved in lockdown as they were under less pressure.

The research was in May. Do you have more up to date?

At least Khan has dialled back from close the schools mantra.

Now wants mass testing. Why we all wouldn’t support this I don’t get. Why clamour for more closure - council able to close too.

houseinthesnow · 15/12/2020 10:19

Most teens are reacting in the opposite way according the reports arse when cut off from friends, school and life they plummeted as all my links will tell you above, since returning to school most are now doing well again.

I am sorry your child is the exception, but I think we need to follow the facts on this one.

You are welcome to deregister and homeschool if you feel that is best for your child.

kirinm · 15/12/2020 10:20

@Crunchymum

I'm in one of the boroughs that are closing schools and its a done deal. Have friends / family spread over numerous schools in the borough and they are all closing. Even the toddlers nursery is closing!!!

Only exception is DN secondary who are closing on Wednesday.

Oh and we are going to be off until 11th January.

If you don't mind me asking, which borough is that? Why are nurseries closing?
houseinthesnow · 15/12/2020 10:21

I understand Khan was under pressure from Labour backed unions to keep up the pressure in terms of schools, he has probably realised what this will do to his chances of being reelected if he continues, so is rightly rowing back. His mental health issues are well documented, and I am sure he does not want to inflict a similar fate on a whole generation of children either, he is a parent after all.

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2020 10:23

Even Starmer backs open schools. Tg.
Our MP follows this party line

Khan irritated me enough to consider his stance when next voting

I would have agreed with you up until last week. I'm in London and things are changing fast. Like before first lockdown. Only way I can see us going back to school in January is if vaccinations really do change the hospital admissions and deaths. Realistically no way can they roll out jabs that quickly and the whole process needs 28 days before working. So we aren't going to have an effect for a while. Schools will need January off in most areas to recover from Christmas. I personally think the government will come to this conclusion after Christmas by looking at the latest figures and getting scared.
BethlehemIsInTier1 · 15/12/2020 10:26

@houseinthesnow

If we did not have the support of the government, schools would never have opened at all.

Definitely one to bear in mind when you read threads like this.

Some people on here wanted to keep the schools closed indefinitely (on full pay of course) back in magicland where children's education and well being come at the bottom of the list of priorities.

Alright Gavin Wink

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2020 10:30

If you back Greenwich you may as well say I’m fine for my dc’s education to suffer if cases get high. Fine with everyone else being prioritised over dc.

It’ll be a much easier pandemic to manage but children will take the hit. And working parents.

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2020 10:31

I wonder what happened at 10.00

Councils had to respond

Agree they need too but should they is the question.

Then need to for everything you say and heaven knows my perfectly healthy kids need to be in school.

However my London based kids have been off school for nearly three weeks now. One told to isolate because teacher got positive test. The other had his school close until January because so many cases in the school.

My conclusion to this is that the only way to reset schools in at least high risk areas is to close (move online) for at least a month. That gives the virus time to run through families and bubbles.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/12/2020 10:33

Why should l deregister her? What a shit response. She’s entitled to be SAFE at school and she isn’t. And your response is, because she isn’t safe l deregister her. Isn’t the issue safety here? Not deregistering? She wants to keep going. But a closure of 3 weeks or so isn’tthe end of the world.

Research here.

You are enjoying winding posters up lol, and no we most certainly are not behind the government, it's walking into the fire without a hose.
houseinthesnow · 15/12/2020 10:33

There is not a single political party that supports the closure of schools, tg marsha they know it will become a toxic battleground with children set to lose everything.
