Are your dentists doing check ups/ fillings yet?

I have been trying for months to get a check up for myself, DH and DS. Our dentist said they were hoping to start again by December but not been given the go ahead yet. I have a tooth that I think a filling has fell out of and I really don’t wanna spend Xmas in pain :(
We’re in the north west.

Ours is (west London). If you tell your dentist you are in pain they should really do it. If not you can probably find one who will.

Start by calling your dentist and go from there.

Helbelle75 · 11/12/2020 17:21

Ours has been open a while. Private dentist and I've had a hygienist appointment, check up and a root canal.

wendz86 · 11/12/2020 17:41

I went private for a check up and ended up having fillings done privately and a root. Canal . Cost a fortune but not in pain any more .

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 11/12/2020 17:52

Yes, private practice and we have had checkups and believe they are doing treatments if needed.

Bettydot · 11/12/2020 18:01

We are NHS in a tier 3 area we all had check ups a month or so ago. I think we were lucky though as they advised that they’ve had to cancel lots of check ups due to the time needed to clean between appointments and having to vacate the room for an hour after drilling. Ours just happened to be at the right time. I’ve since had an emergency appointment for a broken tooth, was booked in for the day after I called and have an appointment for the tooth to be removed too. Seems odd that some NHS practices still aren’t offering appointments.

madcatladyforever · 11/12/2020 18:03

No, I live in Somerset and can't get into a dentist anywhere. I've had to travel back to my old dentists in Sussex to get my teeth done, it's a four hour drive.

AmadeustheAlpaca · 11/12/2020 18:04

Edinburgh here. Had emergency dental treatment at a specialist centre in the summer. Just had three separate appointments for root canal treatment, a filling and a crown. All NHS. The emergency treatment was free, the other treatments I paid a bit (I always do for anything other than a check up or the hygienist) but nowhere near the same amount as totally private treatment. The dentist has always been available for advice about emergencies since March but there are still no routine check ups. It’s Tesco dentist if anyone is interested.

Scarby9 · 11/12/2020 18:10

Yes. I got in for a check up last week. I pay monthly via Denplan and other patients who pay privately as they go started being offered check up appointments from September.
This check up was my first for 20 months. The dentists cancelled my February 2020 annual appointments for reasons other than Covid, so it has been a long wait. The top of two of my front teeth had broken off in January 2020 so I was so relieved to get in.
I was in the dentist's room for 6 minutes. 6 MINUTES. Which included quite a bit of introductory chit chat about journeys etc. No cleaning at all.
I now have a booking for end of March to have the teeth fixed, and an appointment the following week for plaque removal - but only via hand scraping apparently.

SantaPranki · 11/12/2020 18:12

Phone them instead of being on here .
Friday night though, so unlikely to be open now.

SquirmOfEels · 11/12/2020 18:14

NHS - no routine check ups at the moment. Advised to ring again in February as they might start early next year

PuppyMonkey · 11/12/2020 18:14

Ours is NHS and is only doing emergencies. Been told to wait till they contact us to arrange general check ups. Not holding my breath.

captainprincess · 11/12/2020 18:16

Yep, had a filling in July. This is a private dentist though, so may be different.

TurquoiseDress · 11/12/2020 18:17

Yes (am at private dentist...no NHS spaces round here!)

But it's v difficult to book a check up due to demand, think they started up with routine appointments back in June (I believe high street/family dentists all had to close during lockdown, on government guidance)

I pay a monthly subscription for a dental plan (which did not stop during lockdown!) so far this year I've seen the dentist once & hygienist once (should be twice for each)

Thank goodness GP surgeries are still open and have been all the way through!

Thisyearisshit · 11/12/2020 18:21

@SantaPranki
I have phoned them?? They said they should have started in December but haven’t had the go ahead like my original post said.....

Thanks for the replies just wanted to get an idea of if many are back to normal service or not.

I pay a monthly insurance which they said didn't have to pay for several months but it still covered the costs of emergency treatment so that was a bonus. It is only about ten pounds a month anyway - well worth it.

june2007 · 11/12/2020 18:24

Yes my husband has an appointmen for route canal next wk.

Ponoka7 · 11/12/2020 18:24

My dentist isn't doing NHS work, but is seeing private patients. If people can do facials and lip fillers, there's really no reason why dental services can't start up again. I'm going to lose a tooth because I can't et a filling, as probably are many others.

Itsonlymakebelieve · 11/12/2020 18:27

I had low level pain for the last few months but not bad enough to push for an emergency appointment, then it suddenly got a lot worse. Had an appointment earlier this month at my usual NHS dentist (Scotland) for a cracked tooth, offered an extraction but because of where the tooth is I asked if treatment was an option? Got an x-ray, broken part of the tooth removed and a temp filling ( no drilling ) smoothed off by a nail file. Got a follow up appointment before Christmas to see what my options are going forward. Very happy that I had an option rather than just an extraction.

Bronzino · 11/12/2020 18:35

Mine is up and running as normal, though it is private.

secretlyhappy · 11/12/2020 18:41

They do all the treatments and check ups for private patients at least. Dc are under nhs and they will have check up in February.

SantaPranki · 11/12/2020 18:47

Ok@Thisyearisshit .
Have you told them you have a problem rather than wanting check ups ?

SantaPranki · 11/12/2020 18:50

Good luck btw .

Spacemonkey2016 · 11/12/2020 18:54

Yes, mine has since September. My son and I have both had a routine appointment (originally cancelled in lockdown 1), and I have had a crown fitted a few weeks ago (we're NHS patients).

megletthesecond · 11/12/2020 18:57

Yes, Hampshire. Both me and the Kids have had check ups and hygienist appointments this autumn. DS has had an orthodontist appontment too.

hettyhooverdoover · 11/12/2020 19:25

Yes, I need a filling and it's an extra £105 because of the covid restrictions and having to leave the room for an hour after my treatment so loss of earnings plus PPE. My actual filling is £120 so £225 for one filling.
