After Covid, will we still be so worried about climate change?

I am not saying that climate change is not real or is not an issue but having confronted a very immediate threat to our selves & our loved ones will climate change no longer be seen as the end of the world?

OP posts:

I think coronavirus does seem to have make people less worried about climate change - no one seems to be at all concerned about single-use plastic any more, and there's been such a worrying shift away from public transport. Which is pretty scary, as climate change is ultimately a much, much bigger threat.

FourTeaFallOut · 10/12/2020 22:33

Yeah, I think so. Until recently most of us lived in a bubble where dire warnings seemed like cautionary tales that never really materialised. I suspect coronavirus may have popped that complacency.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/12/2020 22:41

There is nothing worse than climate change

Seriously, it's over...

After Covid, will we still be so worried about climate change?
RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 10/12/2020 23:33

Yes, and so we should be.

Bushola · 10/12/2020 23:45

Don’t worry the fuel shortages caused by Brexit will shift people back to public transport as fuel will have to be rationed and priority given to public transport.

HeddaGarbled · 10/12/2020 23:47

Yes.

MarshaBradyo · 10/12/2020 23:48

I think we’ve seen a hint of how reluctant we are to change and what happens when scarce resources force it. It might not be for a while but won’t be hugely dissimilar in the way we ignore it for as long as possible.

Meruem · 10/12/2020 23:49

Do any of the little things make much difference though? I mean, I do them but I am not convinced. There was a thread earlier about wrapping paper and so many people commented “as long as it’s recyclable” but I watched a documentary not long ago about how a lot of our recycling we leave out ends up in landfill anyway. Either it’s contaminated by someone putting in the wrong thing or councils aren’t doing what they should. We need huge changes that are out of our control as individuals. Nothing we’ve done so far seems to have made much difference.

SatishTheCat · 10/12/2020 23:49

Climate change is much more dangerous than covid

MarshaBradyo · 10/12/2020 23:51

Plus we have a vaccine for Covid. Without it things would get pretty bad.

If we leave it too late for this in the same way..

bmachine · 11/12/2020 00:16

You should be more scared of climate change than covid. 100% more scared.

BlackForestCake · 11/12/2020 00:55

No, it's pointless while retailers continue to package stuff in ever more plastic. My council is useless at recycling, doing the legal minimum and sometimes less. And car drivers make it clear they are not going to stop driving everywhere until they are forced to.
ineedaholidaynow · 11/12/2020 01:02

Seeing how many people are talking about what holidays they can go on once travelling is easier I don’t think many people are thinking about climate change.

RhubarbTea · 11/12/2020 01:32

Climate change is 1000% more terrifying than covid and is on my mind far more.

DdraigGoch · 11/12/2020 01:43

Isn't covid worse if you live in an area with poor air quality?

Pyewhacket · 11/12/2020 02:10

Why will Brexit affect crude oil supply from Saudi Arabia ? Is it the same as being short of water or widespread malnutrition from empty supermarket shelves.
DioneTheDiabolist · 11/12/2020 02:14

We should be OP. Covid (along with many more infectious diseases) and climate change are linked.

AddisonM · 11/12/2020 02:17

How come people always say we should be terrified of climate change, and then don’t provide any info to back it up?

Why should we be so scared? What’s actually going to happen? I am really unclear on this.

I’m off for a Google. Because this is definitely what my insomnia needs.

Inkpaperstars · 11/12/2020 04:25

I find climate change much more frightening, the two can't even compare really.

I think we should all be even more aware after this, like a pp said the last year may have punctured complacency for some, and it has also proved the world can make huge changes fast when it has to. Well, it has to. People need to feel the same urgency about climate change as we did at the start of all this.

Inkpaperstars · 11/12/2020 04:26

I mean the same urgency they felt about taking quick measures re covid.

OpheliasCrayon · 11/12/2020 04:27

We should be way, way, way more worried about climate change than covid. Covid will go away and mainly is fatal for people older than the average age of death in our country (that absolutely doesn't make it ok this said and I know it has killed younger people, and every death is tragic... I've lost a child, not to covid, and I'd never belittle bereavement)...

But climate change isn't going away, it won't be stopped with a vaccine, people don't take it seriously, a lot of damage has been done by trump and his attempts at erasing it. It will continue to permanently and irrevocably damage the planet we have ans rinse the resources we have...and what then? What does the human race do then, when we have destroyed our own world through wastefulness and lack of thought for the environment? Nothing...because there's no coming back from this

TwinklyLightsandBaubles · 11/12/2020 04:53

I’m still worried about climate change. But obviously the pandemic has caused an awful lot of stress and upset for everyone and has taken the spotlight. I think climate change should be going straight back on the main agenda without delay.

One thing I often think is that the pandemic has created a huge amount of additional non recyclable waste. The single use face masks that are strewn all over the place and tragically wildlife is getting caught up in for example.
I look at every bit of packaging for stuff we buy and feel frustrated when half of it says ‘not yet recyclable’. Why can’t much more be done to make all packaging recyclable?

Rainforests are being cut down at an alarming rate and many countries are building huge numbers of non renewable energy stations. When is this going to stop?

We know what needs to happen and what the world needs to be doing so why aren’t more countries working together to make positive change?

Jrobhatch29 · 11/12/2020 05:47

I'm more worried about climate change

Coffeeand · 11/12/2020 05:53

Western Canada. No mixing of households at all until early January, but I expect it will get pushed out further then.

We didn’t have much by way of restrictions earlier in the year and have never had a lockdown exactly, so this is much stricter than it’s been to date.
