My DS caught covid at school.

On Monday I was notified my son had had a close contact with 2 covid cases in his class. Since then my son and another pupil from the same class have tested positive. Thankfully he has had mild symptoms and largely seems himself and the temperature has gone.
I'm so scared that everyone else is going to catch it. We are being as careful as possible but I cant get my risk right in my head. I know statistically we are low risk but I'm scared!

Just needed somewhere to vent i guess. If your child/children caught it, did the rest of the household?

Yes. We all got it roughly within 3 days of each other. All mild symptoms. So please try not to worry too much. And don’t try to isolate from a young child.

Littlebelina · 09/12/2020 20:28

Nope. Non of rest of us caught it as far as we are aware. Didn't even try to isolate from ds when he was ill either

LadyAcony · 09/12/2020 20:29

Anecdotally: my neighbour caught it. Her husband and two sons didn’t. They live in a small flat.

Tittie · 09/12/2020 20:34

We all caught it, BUT we were fine (and DH is asthmatic). My DH described it as man flu. We felt ill, but were able to keep looking after the kids/work from home/do the usual jobs that need doing.

I didn't make a big effort to keep way from DS because he's only 4 and I just thought it would upset him too much if he couldn't have a cuddle from us. Blush

HairyFloppins · 09/12/2020 20:36

DH started with symptoms on Sunday coughing and a fever. Me and dd2 are now coughing away. Dd1 is fine so far touch wood.

GymFagsandPinkGinLover · 09/12/2020 20:38

My DH and 4 DC all got it within days of each other. I didn’t (tested negative during and after isolation period). Shared a bed with DH and didn’t bother keeping away from the DC as assumed I’d definitely get it as there was no way I could self isolate and avoid touching stuff in the same small house as all of them!

wildthingsinthenight · 09/12/2020 20:43

I had it but my DH and DS didn't

Vanannabananna · 09/12/2020 20:46

Our 2 year old had it and none of the rest of us tested positive or had symptoms whilst isolating.

I shared a bed with a poorly DD for 10 days so amazing I didn’t get it. No idea where she picked it up!

Shopaholic100 · 09/12/2020 20:48

My DS tested positive today. He has been nowhere (uni is online) apart from his weekend job he started last week, I’m certain he caught it from there warehouse packing, he has been wearing his mask all day at work not even removing it at break time. Developed symptoms on Sunday night, severe headache, slightly raised temperature, slight cough, exhaustion and his taste and smell has gone. He’s been locked in his room and we just drop food off. DH and I seem ok so far, I hope it stays that way!

Susanwouldntlikeit · 09/12/2020 20:52

Very clear from responses that there is no rhyme or reason-why even ask the question? Unless you have an agenda?
Hope the DC makes a speedy recovery.

winterbabythistime · 09/12/2020 20:55

It really isn't a given that you'll all catch it.
Dh cousin had it and his wife and toddler didn't catch it.
Also when my ds had the full blown flu at 18 months he slept with me for 2 weeks as he was so unwell, lay basically on top of me each night, occasionally puking on me etc. I didn't catch it from him.
(I know Covid isn't the flu, it's just to demonstrate that infectious viruses aren't always inevitably caught)

TJ17 · 09/12/2020 20:55

I know someone who tested positive and he still shared a bed with his wife every night and spent time with her and his daughter in the same room - neither she or the daughter caught it. The wife apparently constantly cleaned everything and tried to keep her distance as much as possible (although did touch his forehead to feel for a temp etc 🙄)

AstridAv · 09/12/2020 20:55

I said in my OP why I asked the question. Not every question has an agenda! Would quite like to know what you think the agenda was.
I am concerned for my family! I also have health anxiety so I am worried.

Thanks everyone. It seems very random as to who gets it and who doesn't.

SadSecretSanta · 09/12/2020 20:58

Yes, we both got it after ds tested positive. Ds was fine - just a bit of a temperature for a couple of days. DP and I were completely floored for three weeks.

Emeraldshamrock · 09/12/2020 20:59

It is scary I'm dreading the day the DC bring it home.
You may not catch it. Good luck.

Bakewell79 · 09/12/2020 21:06

My son also caught it from school after being a close contact with a positive case.

Myself and my husband did not catch it from him, we didn’t distance and we live in a small terraced house.

PrivateD00r · 09/12/2020 21:22

I totally understand why you are stressed! I brought it home from work and felt the same. As it happened DH didn't get it, the Dc may or may not have, no obvious symptoms but were a bit under the weather briefly. I hope you all keep well Flowers

Only positive for you is the timing, could have been worse if it kicked off next week!

middleager · 09/12/2020 21:27

My child (14) caught it off a child at school. There were three positives in the class. He was symptomatic.

Neither me, my other DC or DH caught it, but I did go to great lengths to keep it at bay. Not sure I'd do that again!

halcyondays · 09/12/2020 21:27

@Isadora2007

Yes. We all got it roughly within 3 days of each other. All mild symptoms. So please try not to worry too much. And don’t try to isolate from a young child.
OP doesn’t say what age he is, he may not be a young child. Even if he is, you can still reduce the risk of catching it by using separate towels etc. If he’s older, it will be easier to keep at a safe distance especially as he has mild symptoms.

Hopefully nobody else will catch it OP.

AstridAv · 09/12/2020 21:30

He is 10. We are just taking the precaution we can. Extra hand washing separate towels and cutlery. Just trying our best. We live in a small house so hard to distance. Have a toddler too.

GlassLake · 09/12/2020 22:25

Yes I caught it from work and gave it to my son. My second son and husband got it around 3 days later.

Try to reduce the viral load each person receives as the infection passes around your family by ventilating your home and not breathing or talking straight into each others faces. Use your own towels and wash hands before meals.

middleager · 10/12/2020 08:59

We were advised to use the dishwasher too.
We wore face masks when together etc, and teen mainly stayed in his room/own bathroom but this was an older child of course.

Welcometonowhere · 10/12/2020 09:07

I had no symptoms at all Flowers

DianaT1969 · 10/12/2020 09:22

Do you remember when many posters on MN would say that they didn't know anyone who had Covid. Other people would answer about 2-3 cases they knew of - particularly if they worked in health.
That isn't the case now, is it. Lots of MN pile in with whole families and friends who have had it. What caused the change? Many still working from home.
Since schools and universities went back?

Tootsietootie · 10/12/2020 09:26

We've had it twice in the household 3 months apart! First time me, second time DH. No idea if DC had it as asymptomatic and told not to test them.
