My DS caught covid at school.

On Monday I was notified my son had had a close contact with 2 covid cases in his class. Since then my son and another pupil from the same class have tested positive. Thankfully he has had mild symptoms and largely seems himself and the temperature has gone.
I'm so scared that everyone else is going to catch it. We are being as careful as possible but I cant get my risk right in my head. I know statistically we are low risk but I'm scared!

Just needed somewhere to vent i guess. If your child/children caught it, did the rest of the household?

@DianaT1969 remember there's also been a huge increase in testing.
I had classic Covid symptoms at the beginning of March but no tests available so I'd never say I had it as I can't be sure.

DumplingsAndStew · 10/12/2020 11:55

Those who say one family member caught it but didn't transmit to the rest of the household- out of curiosity, how do you know that? Were all other household members tested or did they just not have any symptoms, so assumptions are that they didn't get it?

We all kept getting tested.

I know we shouldn't have, but we did out of curiosity

DumplingsAndStew · 10/12/2020 13:43

@littleharissa

While I don't agree at all that you used resourced not entitled to, I wish it was allowed, as it'd surely give a better picture of how transmission is happening or not, which is obviously fairly important for trying to contain it.

@DianaT1969

Do you remember when many posters on MN would say that they didn't know anyone who had Covid. Other people would answer about 2-3 cases they knew of - particularly if they worked in health. That isn't the case now, is it. Lots of MN pile in with whole families and friends who have had it. What caused the change? Many still working from home. Since schools and universities went back?
This was me until last weekend. I literally hadn't met a single person first hand who'd tested positive. Four colleagues (and one whole family) tested positive over the weekend. Two more told to self-isolate.

No idea what's going on.

One colleague's son got it and the whole family were tested daily as part of the Imperial College research. No one else in that family got it.

Hi OP

My teenage DD had Covid but the rest of us were fine.

She mostly kept to her room - we brought meals up to her. We have a small house and only one bathroom so I was expecting us to catch it, but it wasn't the case.

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 10/12/2020 14:25

I’m calling it - OP is a troll. Really, don’t you know schools are COVID-safe and children can’t catch it? 😜
Jokes aside though, you don’t need to worry, the vast majority of people have minor symptoms, if any at all. Just keep up with hand washing and sanitising, but give your ds lots of hugs too.
Hope he feels better soon

Frequentflier · 10/12/2020 14:37

This is a useful thread for me as my son is isolating- boy next to him in school got covid- and we are in a v small flat. He has his own room and I have given him his own bathroom and bring meals in, while DH and I use the other one. It's been 7 days with no symptoms, so I am hoping he's ok. But am sure this is going to happen again, so am glad that many of you have not caught it from your children.

AstridAv · 10/12/2020 14:47

@AHippoNamedBooBooButt damn you caught me Wink thank you. Ds is doing really well. Temperature and headaches have gone. Just left with a mild cough.
Waiting and hoping no one else gets it now.

@Frequentflier anecdotally my son came into contact with it at school on Friday the other child was coughing, although could've been before. He had symptoms by the Monday. That was the 1st case in the school and now there are 6 confirmed. 4 of which are in DS class and one parent had caught it too. They've now shut the school to year 4, 5 and 6. Our area until recently was one of the lowest rates in the country but has recently got loads of cases and I think we are headed for tier 3.

I was googling and came across this thread. My 9 year old son caught covid in class. Didn't show symptoms of No taste and laying around until 8 days after exposure. Got him testing after not really quarantining around him. My husband, myself and my two girls (15 mos. old and 7 yr old) never caught it. We tried our best to stay away from him, but it is somewhat impossible. I can't believe we didn't catch it and it makes me curious to know if maybe we had if before and didn't know or something. We were tested two times while he had it to make sure we didn't have it..

AstridAv · 18/01/2021 18:10

See I did catch it of DS but my partner and other child didn't. Very strange

Just found out my DS has COVID- confirmed by PCR after doing a lateral flow test. Absolutely sure he caught it at school as that’s the only place he’s been and they have notified parents last week that apparently the Indian variant has been found. I informed the school of all DS close contacts but the school have said that these students can continue to come into school as long and they will just isolate them in a different room (they are 16 yr 11 and doing final assessments). I was really shocked that they are allowing students in that are close contacts of a confirmed positive case- it explains how my son ended up catching it I suppose! AIBU or does this seem odd?

Sorry but you have a very small flat but have more than one bathroom???

Honestly I really think there are a privileged group that really don't understand the conditions a lot of people live in, I live in what I would consider a reasonable sized flat and there is no room for a second bathroom.

SpnBaby1967 · 19/05/2021 08:27

I had it, it was fine. I've had worse colds and I'm a 40 year old, overweight asthmatic. Was able to continue working throughout (wfh obviously) all I really had was a sore throat and extremely tired.

Still shared a bed with DH, sat with the kids and none of them caught it.

That’s not what should be happening. In theory some of the close contacts may have picked it up and others won’t have done. First concern is that they spread it on the way to or from school or to the staff who are in contact with them, second concern is that if any of the close contacts have contracted it they can then spread it to the close contacts who hadn’t already contracted it. Utter madness!

I would report this. Just not sure who to? LEA, test and trace? I would dearly love for education to go undisrupted for all. But the small disruption is the only way to avoid mass disruption. Actually I think I would start with a call to the Head.
Blueberry40 · 19/05/2021 14:04

Yes I wouldn’t be sure who to report it to! Had a long talk with the head teacher this morning who said that it had been human error by a member of staff to advise close contacts to come in. When I suggested that assessments were being put before health he was adamant this wasn’t the case Hmm.....but did admit that the school were trying to balance a lot of different factors. He assured me that it wouldn’t happen again but tbh at least one of the students who went in yesterday has since tested positive (from a PCR test taken BEFORE she went into school) so I suspect the damage is already done. Just hope the children who have it don’t have anyone at home who gets very ill from it Sad

NearlyAlwaysInsane · 19/05/2021 14:11

Friend caught it a few weeks ago, was not sure if it was from nursery or school or work. Two DC and DH didn't test positive though, and didn't catch it during quarantine either. No symptoms - a LF test and then a PCR confirmation is the only way they knew.

SummerHouse · 19/05/2021 14:21

@Blueberry40 you have done all you can. At least they are on the right page now. Fingers crossed for your school and a speedy recovery for your son. Bit frustrating that they seem a bit all over the place but it must be really tough managing this.

RedMarauder · 19/05/2021 14:54

@Whatever9999 having two bathrooms doesn't mean you are privileged. I've lived and stayed in a variety of different flats over the years. In modern flats they will give you 2 bathrooms over having a decent sized kitchen, in social housing, or adequate storage, in private housing.

Bananarice · 19/05/2021 18:39

Dh caught it from work. Gave it me, I in turn passed it to ds3 who is breastfeed. My other two sons were fine, dh was against testing them unless they developed symptoms which never appeared. I had mild symptoms and ds3 had a high temperature for a few hours.

Dh was asymptomatic, but he testes for work and that is how we found out. It was during homeschooling time, back in January. We had the windows open and put the heating on higher than normal. We also layered up. It was a memorable two weeks. Dsis the star, bought us lot of delicious home cooked meals. I guess I would now need to return the favour should she get the virus.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 19/05/2021 19:13

I had it. My 9 month old baby was fine. We spent lots of time in close quarters together!

Abraxan · 19/05/2021 19:27

I also (most likely) caught covid from school, probably from a child in one of the classes I taught.
It spread through school very quickly in the following 4-6 weeks.

However, despite having symptoms being pretty poorly myself, dh and teen Dd didn't. Neither SD from me, dh remained sleeping in the same bed before, after and during.

Mylittleponysuperfan · 19/05/2021 19:28

I caught it from work in nov 2019
We all felt ill there but my partner didn’t catch it
It’s swept his work (just after the first lockdown)
And he didn’t catch it then either

I think he has a forcefield round him!
