Has anyone tested positive and they’d been taking vitamin d regularly?

Just interested in seeing if it’s had any effect in your opinion? This is obviously not scientific and I know severity is different for all but just looking at opinions.
Ive been taking a high dose for months, dh hasn’t and has tested positive. He’s been very ill with typical symptoms. I’ve been feeling ill but don’t have the usual symptoms. I didn’t test so can’t say if I had it or not.
Just seeing if there are any similar experiences.

My DGM is swearing by this and has had loads delivered. My uncle and cousin were pretty bad with covid my aunt tested positive but had no symptoms at all ( all in the same house hold) She had already been taking vitamin D for years before.

Covidwoes · 09/12/2020 20:23

Yes I did! I've been taking it daily for over 3 years. I've not long had Covid in pregnancy (positive test was just over 3 weeks ago at 32 weeks) and while I was ill, I wasn't hospitalised or anything, and baby is doing well (touch wood). Who knows if the vitamin d helped, but I like to think it did. Apart from being pregnant though, I have no other risk factors (no other conditions, not overweight etc).

Porcupineinwaiting · 09/12/2020 22:44

Yes I'd been taking it for over a year due to a deficiency. Level was 47 parts per whatever when I got sick. Was really sick but not hospitalized, then long COVID. Still sticking with the vit d3 supplements, though they're not a magic bullet.

ElephantWhaleRabbit · 10/12/2020 00:31

Anecdotal but the mother and three children of a family on my street tested positive. However, the father didn't and he put this down to him being the only one who was taking Vitamin D and Vitamin C supplements.

Wobblysausage · 10/12/2020 00:34

Yes I take it daily but I was still quite poorly with Covid. I fought it off but I don’t think it had anything to do with the vitamins.

Hillsandhumps · 10/12/2020 06:55

What dose of vitamin D are you all taking? I know some take 2000 iu and others are in 4000 or even 6000 iu daily.

picklemewalnuts · 10/12/2020 07:53

The dose you take doesn't necessarily tell you the dose you have. Apparently high body fat reduces vit d absorption. I've been taking a higher dose, but my blood levels were still too low. I was told to increase to 10 tablets per week

epythymy · 10/12/2020 07:54

I take high dose vitamin D and have regularly worked with people who are actually poorly with Covid in limited PPE and never become unwell myself.

Porcupineinwaiting · 10/12/2020 07:56

I was taking 1000iu then and take 2000iu now because I'm still trying to raise the levels in my blood.

Plus vit C, zinc and a load of other stuff.

The ZoeApp people did some analysis on vit taking and COVID and have concluded that taking a multivitamin, vit D, probiotics or omega 3 provided a small protective effect.

I take 1,000 IU per day but have a higher BMI. I wonder if I should increase it?
BatleyTownswomensGuild · 10/12/2020 08:07

My husband tested positive and had been on Vit D for months. However, he had a very mild version of the illness and it never went to his chest, despite being asthmatic. Read into that what you will...

SlothWithACloth · 10/12/2020 08:09

Thanks for all the interesting responses.
I’ve been taking 1000iu daily. I think the government guidelines are a lot less than that.

There's a poster on here that knows all, her name is Bah something (sorry!) and she advocates much higher doses.

I was taking 2000iu a day since March but after reading her posts I've upped it to 4000iu a day. My bmi is on the lower side but I wear factor 50 everyday so I wanted to be safe.

I also take vit c/zinc chewables.

I got both from Just Vitamins and I highly recommend the-great service and biodegradable packaging.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 10/12/2020 09:15

I take it daily for other reasons, and I'm yet to have covid. That said, I'm not aware I've been near anyone with covid, so it doesn't prove much.

Please read this open letter here from 100 influential doctors and scientists:

"Over 100 Scientists, Doctors, & Leading Authorities Call For Increased Vitamin D Use To Combat COVID-19: Scientific evidence indicates vitamin D reduces infections & deaths"

"Research shows low vitamin D levels almost certainly promote COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations, and deaths. Given its safety, we call for immediate widespread increased vitamin D intakes."

"Vitamin D modulates thousands of genes and many aspects of immune function, both innate and adaptive. The scientific evidence1 shows that:

-Higher vitamin D blood levels are associated with lower rates of SARS-CoV-2 infection.
-Higher D levels are associated with lower risk of a severe case (hospitalization, ICU, or death).
-Intervention studies (including RCTs) indicate that vitamin D can be a very effective treatment.
-Many papers reveal several biological mechanisms by which vitamin D influences COVID-19.
-Causal inference modeling, Hill’s criteria, the intervention studies & the biological mechanisms indicate that vitamin D’s influence on COVID-19 is very likely causal, not just correlation."

They suggest to take 2000 - 4000 iu per day, at least during the pandemic period, as the established RDA of 400 is based on a miscalculation that has never been corrected.

I've been taking vitamin d3 supplements for about 2 months. I started off taking 8000iu per day for 2 weeks then reduced to 4000iu per day. I tested positive for Covid on Monday and have been feeling rotten. My husband doesn't take Vit d3 and is symptomatic but not as bad as me. He had taken a test and is awaiting the results.

ThreeTwoOneGoo · 10/12/2020 21:28

I tested positive. Had been taking vit d since March but only a low dose. Only had mild symptoms but now have post-fatigue

dietingtomorrow · 10/12/2020 21:49

I've been taking 1000iu D3 for some years, as it's supposed to help alleviate arthritis and I wear factor 50. Good job because I've zero chance of getting a hip replacement until all this is over. I haven't had Covid.

im5050 · 12/12/2020 03:01

I take vitamin D spray D3000 x 2 sprays of it a day I’ve been doing this for a few years
I know my levels are high as I get a private test every 4 months
I also take B12 & Iron spray

If your overweight
Have any form of gastric problems stomach ulcers, gallstones
You are much much better of taking the spray version rather than tablets as you will absorb it better .
If your taking tablets you might as well be taking smarties 😂

AverageHuman · 12/12/2020 04:50

I’m the only one in my house with any significant symptoms. I’d forgotten to take my vitamins but had reminded everyone else! Poss DH had it in Feb though.

Theworkwitch · 12/12/2020 04:58

What does zinc do and how much should I take? I've used vit d spray for years, it was 1000 but now 4000 I think. I use the b12 spray too

monkeytennis97 · 12/12/2020 05:21

I'm on 4000IU a day and have been since September prior to that I was on 2000IU a day and lots of sun over Spring and Summer. I will be testing my levels today. I lost lots of weight because I knew as a secondary teacher I would be high risk for catching it (despite the government's bollocks about schools being safe). Will be interested to see what my levels are. I also take Vit C and zinc daily.

monkeytennis97 · 12/12/2020 05:25

@Fishergirl hope you feel better soon Thanks

poshme · 12/12/2020 09:23
