Literally going out of my mind right now.

My dad got admitted to hospital 2 days ago with low oxygen. He’s been on the mask but now been put on the CPAP machine. The hospital aren’t being very clear about what’s going on right now and I am worried sick. Does this mean he’s not gonna make it? Any positive stories? :(

Your dad's in hospital because the virus is attacking his lungs making it hard to get enough oxygen. The CPAP machine will help with that - the oxygen mix is pressurized which helps with absorption.

Your dad is obviously seriously ill right now which must be very scary but he's in the right place and being treated by people who have an awful lot more knowledge on how to treat COVID than they did 6 months ago.

If he's just gone in they are probably running a whole bunch of tests on him and hopefully will be able to give you more information on how he's doing shortly.

Two of my mum's friends were in hospital with COVID a couple of weeks ago. One is home now, the other is improving more slowly but is past the worst. Both in their late 70s.

Lougle · 09/12/2020 13:01

CPAP is a really good way to get oxygen in to your Dad, and it's especially useful if he's got tired from the effort of breathing. They can adjust the amount of oxygen in the air and the amount of pressure that it uses.

I hope he recovers soon. Flowers

My friend was on oxygen and cpap for 3 weeks in April. She’s fine. No problems.

That’s great to hear she is doing well. Did she have any underlying conditions?

My mum has spoken to the nurse and they said the reason they put him on CPAP was because his reps were a bit high?

Oh you poor thing how old is your dad ?

IsFinnRogersDead · 09/12/2020 14:53

www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000q3dn This tells the story of Robin Hanbury-Tenison and his battle with Covid.

Hope your dad is back climbing mountains soon too.

Lougle · 09/12/2020 16:00

@Vampyhooch1987 The CPAP machine will help with that. Breathing very fast is extremely tiring for the body.

He’s 58 but does have a couple of underlying health conditions which is why I’m so concerned

My friend's 83 year old uncle caught Covid after being admitted to hospital with sepsis. He was discharged to his own home after a week where he lives alone, and his 75 year old sister cared for him. She caught Covid from him. Both have recovered.

Oh bless you, sending lots of love. Just think even those admitted to hospital the survival rate far outweighs the death count xxx

TwoDirections · 09/12/2020 19:05

Op, I wrote a similar post a few of months ago. My dad was admitted. It was such a scary time. 3 months later he is home and recovering.

WhoseThatGirl · 09/12/2020 19:09

Your dad is young which is one of the best indicators of outcome. Fingers crossed everything works out okay.

HairyFloppins · 09/12/2020 19:17

Hope your dad will be ok OP.

They will take good care of him Flowers

RedRiverShore · 09/12/2020 19:22

I think that CPAP was what Boris was on when he went into icu and he came out ok.

Wishing your DF well

That’s great news that your dad is recovering well. You must be so relieved. It is so scary with it being so uncertain xx

I have a friend (38) who was ventilated for 2 weeks and it didn't look good. She's home, absolutely fine, no lasting issues, been away on weekend trips, and from what i can see on facebook, she's enjoying her life.

I was hospitalised too, but very briefly and didn't need any extra oxygen. I'm unfortunately taking longer to recover than my friend - 9 months and my breathing is still sketchy, but i improve a little every month. I know i'll recover fully eventually.

I hope your Dad is okay, love. I'm pretty sure he will be, but it's scary, eh? Keep us updated and i'll look forward to your post telling us he's home.

Onedropbeat · 09/12/2020 20:50

Best wishes to your dad for a fast recovery

He’s in the best place and being well taken care of

My colleagues grandad who’s 80/90? Got it and was in hospital for ages and survived. Will see if I can find the story it was on the news.
