If you are high-risk / have been shielding / have health problems - will you be getting the vaccine?

When you can get it. I know a few people in the vulnerable/shielding/underlying health problems or carer categories who have been really careful but also say they won’t have it and I’d be interested to hear from others. No judgment either way to be clear.

@KittenCalledBob Mine too.
We are all isolating for the fortnight before Christmas so that we can meet up in doors. My dad said, 'So if we get offered the vaccine, what do...' and we all leapt in with 'SAY YES!!!!'. He was so relieved.

Madhairday · 08/12/2020 22:14

ECV here and yes, bring it on.

iVampire · 08/12/2020 22:22

CEV - will get it as soon as invited

trulydelicious · 09/12/2020 07:19

No.

I have health issues and I will not be having the vaccines being released now (i.e. mRNA, adenovirus vector) because:
-they are based on new technology
-not enough time has passed to be able to ascertain potential delayed onset side effects

Healthy family members will not be having them either due to the same reasons

KittenCalledBob · 09/12/2020 07:26

@Scarby9 we're not seeing my parents inside this Christmas Sad

Scarby9 · 09/12/2020 09:14

@KittenCalledBob We are in the fortunate position of being able to isolate first which I fully recognise most people can't - and I can only do it because a work colleague is stepping up to cover a face to face day for me, for which I am hugely grateful.
My mum's dementia means my dad is under huge pressure as her carer and the difference in him since he knew we were coming has been so obvious. We will still be really careful and are limiting our visits indoors to a couple of hours a day (hopefully with an added bit of time outside) but for us it got to the point where we decided to look into ways we could manage it.
If we had known quite how quickly they were likely to be offered the vaccine, I do think we might have waited, but we can't take it away from them now. I hope you get to see your DPs soon.

KittenCalledBob · 09/12/2020 10:06

Thank you @Scarby9 - I hope you have a lovely family Christmas Xmas Smile

This is a really interesting article. mRNA has actually been around for 30 years, but we didn't have the technology to enable stable production. It has also already been used in many trials for cancer over the last several years, and has had some amazing results.

endofthelinefinally · 09/12/2020 10:26

I will have it the minute I get to the front of the queue. So will DH.

IrmaFayLear · 09/12/2020 12:27

Aside from a known reaction to certain vaccines, I am astonished that some CEV people are now saying they won’t have the vaccine.

What are they going to do then? Stay in forever? It’s different if someone has been going out and about/working anyway, but those who have barricaded themselves inside... this is going to be a self-imposed life sentence. I really hope they have peace with their decision and don’t go on and on (as witnessed on MN) demanding that the whole world should stay in and the economy tank to protect them.

I am sprinting to get the vaccine. If I turn into a werewolf, so be it. That’s better than the terrible outcome I am assured from covid.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/12/2020 12:33

And it was shielders in particular that were doing that? Really? Because I'd like some evidence of that as I don't appreciate being framed as a false bogeyman for the aggrieved.

IrmaFayLear · 09/12/2020 13:23

Just re-read threads at the beginning of all this. I must admit I stopped reading any of them because they were so upsetting.

People are CEV to coronavirus . No one had heard of the term before the pandemic. So it makes sense to be vaccinated against coronavirus . It makes no sense whatsoever to continue to “shield” if there is an option to protect yourself. Of course you can do that if you wish, but that’s a personal choice.

EmmaBrightside · 09/12/2020 13:23

No way- according to gov.uk it hasn't been tested on people with compromised immunity, nor do they have any data regarding how it interacts with other medication. I don't think I am foolish to want to avoid it.

I'm on the allergic side of things but I've been teaching throughout. I never shielded. Makes no odds to me
iVampire · 09/12/2020 13:27

And it was shielders in particular that were doing that?

Not that I saw - and I’ve been on so many threads talking about shielding

I think it’s a misunderstanding of the rejection of the Great Barrington stuff - because at the time it came out there was no means to ‘protect the vulnerable’ in any meaningful way

And IIRC, it wasn’t the shielded who were necessarily at the vanguard of those pointing out the weaknesses in that attempt at a policy

Shielders have not been making any demands - not least because there is no-one speaking for us

FourTeaFallOut · 09/12/2020 13:28

Yes I agree. I'm disagreeing that the shielders were those who were "demanding that the whole world should stay in and the economy tank to protect them" as you suggested.

Bathroom12345 · 09/12/2020 13:34

I agree with Irma. What on earth are these people going to do, stay at home, not work, never get on a plane, never hug loved ones? Its of course not complusory but honestly - do you really understand what this means FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE?

And if airlines, shops, restaurants etc demand proof then so be it. They really wont take your word for it and neither should they. I dont want to be around people who for selfish reasons have decided not to have a vaccine and expect others to accept their decision. How on earth are you going to protect yourself going forward.

FourTeaFallOut · 09/12/2020 13:37

I must admit I stopped reading any of them because they were so upsetting.

You found it upsetting? We had people telling us that we should be jettisoned to the back of the NHS queue if we dared to leave the house, that our children should lose their school places if they were absent from school, that we were going to die anyway and so shouldn't figure in the death statistics. So don't make shit up and expect it to stand.

Bathroom12345 · 09/12/2020 13:38

Its rather like students who are not bothering to have a test before they go home for the Xmas holidays. OK, then put YOUR relatives at risk. Potentially spread the disease to someone who might not cope with it as well. It is know that young people are often without symptons so FGS - have a test and protect your loved ones.

I am on another thread where someone is holiding Hancock personally responsible for the CV19 deaths but that isnt true. It is all of our responsbility to ensure that this virus doesnt spread and if that means having a quick test then just get on with it. Shame on the students who are not bothering.

FuzzyPuffling · 09/12/2020 13:49

Yes.

OrganTransplant123 · 09/12/2020 13:49

I’m another one who will be there anywhere, anytime as soon as I get the call, with my sleeve rolled up in readiness!

trulydelicious · 09/12/2020 14:03

@Bathroom12345

And if airlines, shops, restaurants etc demand proof then so be it. They really wont take your word for it and neither should they

People are already asking for this to be discussed in Parliament so that vaccination is not made compulsory

Its rather like students who are not bothering to have a test before they go home for the Xmas holidays

I agree with you, but a test is not the same as a vaccine/medical treatment

Bathroom12345 · 09/12/2020 14:22

Maybe I came across too harshly. However a company/business can make any rules they like. If you dont like them then you buy/choose another company. If all of them are demanding a CV19 test then there is a choice. You could decide to not leave the country in the case of airlines until the policy is removed or you could start demanding free choice. I have to show a passport when I leave the UK, I have to show my driving licence when I take my driving test, I have to show ID when an Amazon delivery drivers brings alcohol.

I recognise that all of this is not ideal. However expecting a company to take your word that you are immune from a vaccine or have had it but dont believe you have to show proof is something different.

I know a vaccine is not the same as a test but it shows if students cba to get a test what does it show when we are asking for people to get a vaccine to not only protect themselves but others too. If it was just a risk to THEM I might understand a bit more but those people who are waiting for others to show whether it is 'safe' is the ultimate selfish behaviour.

I’m CV (diabetes, very obese) and in my late fifties. I’ll be at the door waiting for it to open the day they call me - which hopefully will be late Jan/early Feb.

Until then I am limiting social contact and being rigorous with distancing, masks and hand hygiene. I’ll still do the masks and SD afterwards, as long as it is required.

In Tier 3 there is no hospitality open anyway. But when it was open over the summer, we didn’t take advantage. Didn’t want to take the risk - partly for ourselves, but also because DH works in a care home and didn’t want to be the one to take it in there.

Once we are both vacced, if hospitality is open we will be in there like a shot. I have missed lazy lattes on squidgy sofas.

Do you really think we'll be that far down the list by early Feb? That would be awesome. I always get a bit of a kick in my step when someone is more optimistic than I am.
