I feel really sorry for teachers and was wondering how many have actually caught it and did anyone else in the class have it

OP posts:
twinkletoesimnot · 03/12/2020 17:05

Not myself, but another teacher in my school bubble did, and 3 children. She definitely caught it from one of the children, as had only been to work and nowhere else - not even in a shop.

We were in a tier 1 area, now tier 2. I feel like it's only a matter of time. I'm dreading it after Christmas when people have been mixing so much more.

QueenBlueberries · 03/12/2020 17:07

I work in a large secondary school and I know five teachers who have had it. There may be more but we are not told officially, so we don't know if a teacher in another department has it or is self isolating.

Three teachers are adamant that they caught it at school, as they live on their own, had little contact outside school, and don't take public transport. One was hospitalised for over a week and hasn't been in school for over a month. The other two teachers take public transport so they can't 100% identify the source.

Why are you asking? Do I detect a mild doubt that teachers are not at risk and they are just whinging again?

Evvyjb · 03/12/2020 17:07

Yes. Before schools shut in LD1. Very unwell.

QueenBlueberries · 03/12/2020 17:08

Oh and many pupils had it too, we get new cases almost daily.

lazylinguist · 03/12/2020 17:13

I'm pretty certain I had it back in early March, though obviously testing wasn't really available then. I work at multiple schools and I expect I caught it from one of the students I had one-to-one lessons with at a boarding school with lots of international kids who'd been home to China, Italy etc during half term. One girl was summoned from my 1 to 1 lesson to be sent home as her grandmother who she spent all of half term with had tested positive. I was fairly ill, lost all sense of smell, taste etc.

Fearofawelshplanet · 03/12/2020 18:22

I am an hlta and I have...

swashbucklecheer · 03/12/2020 18:23

Yes I have. And my son

Fearofawelshplanet · 03/12/2020 18:23

Caught it at school, currently unwell.. have literally been no where else.

starrynight19 · 03/12/2020 18:26

Me and another member of staff in my class did along with four children. It was definitely from school as I was isolating due to cases in class before my symptoms started.

EspressoPatronum · 03/12/2020 18:30

Yep, thankfully had a very mild case. We haven't had any children test positive, but a couple of parents have. I'm in nursery so no social distancing at all.

Three good friends of mine, who teach in secondary schools, have had it.

byronsbrain · 03/12/2020 19:25

Yes I've had it- definitely caught it from a pupil as I never go anywhere!

Covidwoes · 03/12/2020 19:29

Yes! Primary school. Pregnant too, but thankfully although I've been ill, there's been no need for medical intervention, apart from a scan to check baby (all good thankfully). Got the positive 2 and a half weeks ago and still got post viral fatigue, no smell and no taste.

Barbie222 · 03/12/2020 19:29

There were two positives in last month in our school (2 form entry) and a clutch of 6 in my sons school.

I've registered for an antibody test - right now English teachers are not offered it, but Scottish ones are , and you never know. I think I had it before tests were widely available, in April.

Two of my DC are at secondary schools, both schools are still saying they have had zero cases, unbelievably lucky! I also have a DC in a primary school, a teacher developed symptoms on the first day back after the 2 week half term and tested positive, obviously can't have been contracted in school. Unfortunately they passed it to a colleague in the staff room who tested positive later that week. Thankfully no one else caught it though lots of teachers had to isolate, leading to class closures as they couldn't get enough supply.

It is incredible how lucky they have been, especially considering so many of us in the local hospital have had the virus and have DC in the local schools. Fingers crossed that it stays that way!

I am so glad that you are doing ok Flowers
Covidwoes · 03/12/2020 20:30

@Countdowntonothing No. Just gone back which will be 2 and a half weeks of absence. Had a random temp the other day but thankfully it fell on my days off so isolated for a couple more days, as per advice. I've found it tough though. I'm very tired and had a splitting headache this morning, but when I think about how I felt before I have definitely made progress. Still no taste or smell, but that doesn't impact my well-being (even though the taste thing is mega annoying!).
@PrivateD00r thank you! I'm just relieved baby is ok! How are you doing?

Invisimamma · 03/12/2020 20:38

Evidence from Public Health Scotland is showing that infection rates among teachers are not any higher than in other occupations.

TiredMamof2 · 03/12/2020 20:42

About 75% of the teaching staff in our primary school has and a fair few support staff. I have but didn’t catch it from school surprisingly.

TiredMamof2 · 03/12/2020 20:45

*have!

Yeah for baby being ok! I hope you are taking it easy. Hopefully maternity leave soon? I am getting there thank you. Still flipping wiped out and chesty but I don't think that is going to change any time soon. Take care Flowers

No, Scotland used data from England to claim this. The figures were fiddled and have been reported to the National Statistics Authority for investigation.

I work in a Secondary school and we currently have 19 staff off with covid and we are only a few members of staff away from having to close the school. Miraculously I don't seem to have caught it.
