If you are a teacher, have you tested positive

I feel really sorry for teachers and was wondering how many have actually caught it and did anyone else in the class have it

Evidence from Public Health Scotland is showing that infection rates among teachers are not any higher than in other occupations.

The figures have been widely debunked, and if they were true they'd mean that teachers had the same rates as healthcare providers, which isn't exactly good news anyway.

nevergoingoutagain · 03/12/2020 21:44

I have tested positive. Just at the end of my isolation today. I wouldn't have known if I hadn't had contact with another teacher who tested positive as I wasn't very ill and had no common symptoms. It's alarming that if I didn't know I'd had contact with someone I wouldn't have tested and would have continued going to school.

4 members of staff and about the sane no of kids have tested positive in my school (secondary)

Nobeautysleep · 03/12/2020 21:54

I have it, got it from school 100% as I was in classes where a couple of kids tested positive. Tested 3 weeks ago and still suffering. Chest infection. DH and DC got it from me.
Still not back at work.

sydenhamhiller · 03/12/2020 21:58

I was a TA last year. Went in once a week March to June, then 4 days a week teaching a bubble class. Nothing, healthy as a horse.

This year I’m doing my NQT year. My colleague tested positive in October, and 3 classes of our year group (primary) went home, and I was subsequently diagnosed.

I didn’t have a temp or a cough: I only went for a test because I felt fluey and breathless and my colleague had it.

I was fine whilst isolating, just a bit like flu and then lost sense of taste and smell, but went back one day and could barely breathe and spent the rest of the week on an oxygen monitor at home.

We’ve had another 2 classes close down since. A few more colleagues had it earlier in March.

OrangeBlossom28 · 03/12/2020 22:17

I'm getting over it now after starting with symptoms on Nov 15th. I have been very poorly with it and am off sick still with no plan to return before Christmas. I may have got it from school (primary) or from the supermarket, we're not sure. Unfortunately I also passed it on to our 16 yr old who was only poorly for two days and my husband who was ill for a week with it.
It's been a dreadful time in our house with it.

Randomschoolworker19 · 03/12/2020 22:52

No, been tested twice with symptoms but both came back negative. I've never felt so ill or tired in my life so I'm not sure if it's just the exhaustion and stress of it all (tier 3 since June) or whether I've had it and I got tested too early for it to be picked up.

I know 5 colleagues who have / had it and 2 are currently seriously ill and we've currently got 3 bubbles in our small one form primary school closed.

One boy tested positive before the summer holidays and tested positive again a few days ago which is very worrying.

sherrystrull · 03/12/2020 22:59

Yes. In March. I didn't have a positive test then but have since had a positive antibody test

ChloeDecker · 03/12/2020 23:01

Yes. I have tested positive. Caught from a child in school who’s parent sent in despite waiting for a test (and not telling the school)

Feckers2018 · 03/12/2020 23:16

No but two other teachers and lots of children. One was very ill indeed.

lavenderlou · 03/12/2020 23:23

Personally no, but in my small school we have had 4 out of a total of 20 teaching staff (teachers and LSAs) test positive since October. DH works in a secondary school and at least 30 staff have tested positive at his school. And that's just known cases. I think there should be regular testing in schools. DH's colleague tested positve a couple of days ago without symptoms when he was tested prior to hospital admission for an in-patient procedure.

noblegiraffe · 03/12/2020 23:36

Teachers should calculate the positivity rate per 100,000 for their school.

It’s over 10,000 per 100,000 at my school. What tier does that put us in?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 03/12/2020 23:53

5 adults in my school now

One staff member in our school. Asymptomatic apart from a migraine, but part of vaccine trial so routinely tested.

I think I had it back in March, just before lockdown. Obviously no test then for me, but I had breathlessness and a cough (which I've had since). At school, I was working closely with two siblings, one at a time, for about 45 mins each in a small, windowless room, sitting directly across a small table from them. They were both off the week before I had symptoms with symptoms themselves. No way to tell where I caught it, of course, but I thought at the time it could well have been from them, before we knew much about how it was passed around.

noblegiraffe · 04/12/2020 01:34

@noblegiraffe

Teachers should calculate the positivity rate per 100,000 for their school.

It’s over 10,000 per 100,000 at my school. What tier does that put us in?

Ignore my maths here, the usual rates are for 7 days!
sleepwouldbenice · 04/12/2020 19:01

I was going to query tbh! It does sound bad though, must be very draining

Just in terms of hope. I am in Liverpool city region. Rates here were chronic and that included at schools. Cases every day , both in and out of school.

Not saying schools are perfect now by any means but rates have come down in all environments. It can be done. So hoping you all get some respite soon ( ignoring the Xmas January surge...)

noblegiraffe · 04/12/2020 19:23

Yeah I recalculated by dividing by the number of weeks since it kicked off, and it's averaging more like 2000 per 100,000. Still not great though.

Liverpool certainly shows that rates come down, but unfortunately also shows that action needs to be taken to achieve this and it won't happen by ignoring the issue.

mumsneedwine · 04/12/2020 19:32

We are 15,000 per 100,000 this week. It's been utter chaos with school closed for year groups and one day for everyone. Monday is looking v dicey. I'm exhausted.

PrivateD00r · 04/12/2020 19:33

I hope everyone feels better soon Flowers It is a rotten virus, so much worse than I expected.

noblegiraffe · 04/12/2020 19:33

Shit, mums that sounds awful. Hope you get some rest this weekend.

isitorisntit · 04/12/2020 20:03

Yes. I got it in March (tested positive for antibodies 4.5mths later) and still struggling now.

psychomath · 04/12/2020 20:13

No, but I think I had it in March, and if so it was most likely but not definitely from school. I'm getting an antibody test through the ONS so might find out, but not sure whether antibodies would last that long anyway.

pinkclouds333 · 04/12/2020 20:30

Yes! I had it at the end of September. I’m a specialist teacher so teach across a number of year groups. I definitely caught it from school as I hadn’t been anywhere else - not even a supermarket!

Fossie · 04/12/2020 20:38

Had it in September. 9 more staff since. One still off 6 weeks later. Many many children. There does seem to be a lull now with only most of year 13 out of school.

Dinnerfor1 · 04/12/2020 22:47

I currently have it as does my TA. We both tested positive at the same time so it seems very likely we caught it in our primary school classroom. Especially as I don’t go anywhere else other than work! Luckily we are both feeling ok so far but I am concerned whether symptoms will worsen.
