Have they said when they expect healthy, relatively young people to get the vaccine?

DH and I are early thirties. No health conditions. Obviously expect to be at the bottom of the list! But would be interested to know if and when we could potentially be vaccinated.

I don't think adults below 50 are on any list at the moment unless there is an underlying health condition. They have enough Pfizer vaccines (provided they can get it into the country before 31 December) for 20 million, which is probably the current priority lists. Who gets it after that may depend on what other vaccines are licensed, e.g. AZ and Moderna.

If they go ahead with any kind of 'passport' scheme, then they have to make it available to people of all ages, or else many under 50 will feel excluded from society. They cannot introduce those kinds of schemes until they have enough vaccine for everyone and everyone has had a chance to get it. That could be many months.

PuzzledObserver · 02/12/2020 16:06

Not until after all the over-50's - which could conceivably be by Easter. That's as much as we know at the moment.

virucide · 02/12/2020 16:08

i will be 51 in Feb and I have underlying conditions so I get the free flu jab. Do you think I will be vaccinated for Covid by my birthday?

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 02/12/2020 16:27

There are approx 25 million people who get the free flu vaccine.

Now that mild and some moderate asthma has been removed from the CV list, I agree with pp that there should be enough of this first vaccine for most if not all people in groups 1 to 6. I would guess at those being done by March 2021 but it's just a guess.

That leaves the Oxford/moderna vaccine for the group 7 to 9 folks and then healthy adults 18 to 50. (Some of those will get this vaccine as there won't be 100% take up in the higher groups)

Again a guess but I'd say by April 2021 everyone who wants a vaccine will have had one. I hope I'm right!

We are 40s not health conditions we know of, I estimate around June.
LostAcre · 02/12/2020 16:59

I would love to know the answer to this too!

GreyishDays · 02/12/2020 17:05

In Scotland we were told spring for ‘everyone else’, but now they’re saying spring/summer.

It takes a month from first jab to immunity, so I would think it’s unlikely I’m afraid. Can you move your birthday to April? Smile
Srslydontgiveacrap · 02/12/2020 17:08

Does it matter? Once all over 50s, vulnerable people, those with underlying health issues etc are done, the rest of us can just carry on.

Catmads · 02/12/2020 17:21

Someone posted a link to the Telegraph (I think) recently which listed the rough schedule with down to age 18 being completed by the end of March.

ForBlueSkies · 02/12/2020 17:27

50 is the wrong cutoff. It should be 45. (And no I’m not over 45).

God I hate this mentality. I have a 32 year old friend who has been crippled, possibly for life, by this virus.
PowerslidePanda · 02/12/2020 17:31

From a leaked document:

Care home residents and staff, healthcare workers - from beginning of December;
Ages 80 plus - from mid-December;
Everyone aged 70-80 - from late December;
Everyone aged 65-70 - from early January;
All high and moderate risk under 65s - from early January;
Everyone aged 50-65 - from mid January; and
Everyone aged 18-50 - from late January; but with the bulk of this group vaccinated during March.

It was in the HSJ, so should be reputable - but behind a paywall.

Probably not, your in the last priority group so likely by Easter but not much before.

I'm 49. Which is almost in the danger zone. Besides like a PP I know people younger than me who are still suffering dreadfully as a result of Covid-19. None had any known issues. I want the bloody jab.

Rather like the CEV have been for much of the year!

I’d love this to be true 🙏🏻🤞🏻

It was approved less than 12 hours ago, give them a chance Grin

boomshakey · 02/12/2020 17:35

I can't see them organising it so quickly & would estimate at least 6 months for it to be available to all.

Beebityboo · 02/12/2020 17:41

Of course I know there should be a priority list and I know I should be low, but this is hard for me. I have a really rare disorder that causes increased risk of clots and seriously affects my mobility, which has left me with a BMI of 36 Sad. No Dr can really tell me what my chances are with Covid because they don't have the data, and there's such an element of randomness with Covid anyway.
I'm only 33 and acknowledge that I have developed quite severe anxiety in lockdown but I really hoped I would see the light at the end of the tunnel with a vaccine. Now it doesn't look I'll be offered one anytime soon and I don't know if I'll feel 'safe' until I do. I'm just so scared all the bloody time!

SexTrainGlue · 02/12/2020 17:41

The leaked doc is slightly wrong, as the order of recipients doesn't match the final list (CEV are with the 70yos)

Given the numbers in each bracket, it also seems quite optimistic - they will have to go much faster through the some groups because the numbers are so much bigger in each 5 year bracket as you get younger, and the number of CV has not been reliably estimated (or does anyone know better on that?)

The roll out of the Oxford jab may well overlap, so it'll be interesting to see if there are any groups where there are clinical reasons to prefer one jab to the thread (mainly among the CEV and CV, I suspect)

GlacindaTheTroll · 02/12/2020 17:43

The big limiting factor will be he quickly the manufacturers can fulfill the orders.

And of course how far the manufacturers are required to prioritise the COVAX programme

sandragreen · 02/12/2020 17:55

Well Jonathan VT just said today that he expects all the High Risk people to be vaccinated by April, so I guess after that it will be on a risk scale for the rest of the year.

I am 55, white, with no health risks and a healthy weight. I am hoping I will get a vaccine by next Christmas but it's a gigantic logistical task.

PuzzledObserver · 02/12/2020 18:13

JVT also said that the people in the first phase, i.e. over 50’s plus over 16’s with health risk factors constitute 99% of Covid deaths.

Read that again.

99% of Covid deaths will be knocked on the head if everyone in the first phase responds to the invitation to be vaccinated. It takes a month after the first jab... so, May?

Of course that leaves younger people - and long Covid. But it’s a massive improvement on where we are now.
