@CovidCanDoOne so sorry to hear this. My husband (also a Chef) was put under notice two weeks ago and let go last week. Thankfully walked straight into a nursing home chef role but massive pay drop, so we've got to hope my job remains secure.

Apparently Blue water is open 24 hours around the clock from 8am tommorow, before Kent goes in to tier 3 lockdown. It will be rammed with selfish people who think buying wrapping paper is more important than people’s lives and livelihoods

Did you not read that back before you posted @ByebyeOcado Confused Hmm

OP - so sorry. Its brutal. You sound so positive though. And we don't know what the future holds. We can only hope for the best and look for new opportunities.

Really there are so many people (my job went too - travel/events related), and a lot of my friends and colleagues have lost work.

If you have low or no savings and you meet the other conditions you can claim Universal Credit. It is means tested though.

Don't forget if you have paid enough NI contributions you might be entitled to claim JSA - it can help tide you over:

Good luck.

Hospitality has been completely fucked by lockdowns, OP. I am really sorry you have been a victim of this. If any small consolation, the owner of the business will be feeling just as shit as you are.

And before anyone judges anyone else for sending the bad news by text: if you have given your all to a business, only for it to go bust thanks to something you could never have budgeted for, and you are now yourself bankrupt and potentially suicidal, you might not be able to deliver the bad news to your staff in person. Which feels horrible for the staff - but if you are at the end of your tether yourself, then delivering horrendous news to staff you care about can easily feel like the proverbial bridge too far.

BTW, to those who have mentioned it: Furloughing staff isn't possible for all businesses.

ByebyeOcado And so what if she is? If anything, having longer opening times will spread out the shoppers more rather them rushing in during shorter hours.

I’m so sorry for you, it’s really been a shit year.

If it’s of any help, I saw a a tv program this week showing how delivery drivers are urgently needed. They get £1.00 for each parcel delivered and average 200 parcels a day but they choose their workload (according to the telly I saw)
Sorry I can’t remember what show it was.

Enjoy Christmas if that’s possible.

That’s rubbish OP. I don’t agree with the hospitality rules, considering schools etc can remain open when evidence shows they’re a hotbed for the virus. If you’re self employed chef, can you work and advertise yourself as a private chef? I know people can’t visit other households, but I think if you’re a business you can? Tearooms round here are thriving as a big demand for deliveries.

That is shit, OP. Covid can definitely do one right now. And you really shouldn’t have had to find out by text.

Hardly anything in Bluewater will be open tomorrow - non essential retail is closed right up to when Kent moves into tier 3.
the longer opening is M&S food during Xmas week - the food dept is notoriously packed at Christmas & M&S have made the decision to open longer hours in order to allow people to shop more safely. Other supermarkets are doing the same.
Op I’m sorry to hear about your job, my husband is a pub manager for a big chain, we are tier 2 but they have decided it’s just not worth opening. It’s a very worrying time for hospitality workers. I hope you find something soon

So sorry O P from a fellow chef in a pub here .This is so shit.My dd and bf are hospitality too.The thing is pubs have done take aways.and worked hard to follow the rules but now there are new rules how can any of us take enough money in December to cover Jan and feb!!.Currently tier two so only household bubbles allowed. So many years of hard graft to get a great reputation now our company has warned of future redundancies. Our very busy beautiful pub used to be bustling.
Others are right we have a transfer able skill.Stay strong and opportunities will come in 2021.

We are not meant to be shopping for non essential items at the moment. Buying wrapping paper and decorations at the Range isn’t going to save small businesses and pubs. It is just going to involve more people mixing, and they will lengthen lockdown, and pubs and small businesses will suffer even more. The owner of Primark will not suffer if you don’t go in there. Save your business for local places.

ByebyeOcado It’s you that has brought up wrapping paper and now The Range. Although I did buy wrapping paper when I was out last week🤷🏻‍♀️. Do what you want and stop moaning about others.

But stop with this ridiculous judgment of what others do. It’s complete nonsense.

I’ve switched to coffee now.
There are so many sectors that are being decimated now it is absolutely tragic.
Clear head tomorrow & I’ll look at any openings.
I feel upset on so many levels
My lovely sooo shy pot washer who couldn’t say hello on day 1 to us having hour long conversations about football
I’m a mother (to boys) but my Sunday girl talking with me about boy problems!
Like I said it was my lifeline but deep breath

"So sorry OP, similar has happened to me. And as long as people go shopping for non essential goods, break the rules, meet with friends, etc etc then we face further lockdowns and more businesses going under and jobs lost. For every person who breaks the rules, thinking ‘it won’t hurt’ it’s a much bigger picture than will I catch/pass on the virus. Op’s situation is a result of people’s actions. Apparently Blue water is open 24 hours around the clock from 8am tommorow, before Kent goes in to tier 3 lockdown. Stuggling to understand this comment... you are complaining that businesses are closing because of people being selfish and not staying in.. but on the other hand.. shops can only stay open and thriving if people actually shop in them and soend money?!
