If one of you got it, did you all get it?

My son is three and tested positive yesterday. He was in contact with a positive case at nursery last week (isolating since Thursday) so we're not too surprised, he's doing ok so far.

We haven't been following the public health advice, I mean obviously he washes his hands and all that, but we are not keeping him separate from the rest of the family. He's only little, he wouldn't understand, and we have three children aged five and under in a small house, so it's just not possible. It's a risk we have accepted we are all taking, but I'm not making a poorly three year old eat by himself and not give him a cuddle etc.

Anyway, nobody else has symptoms yet but I expect we will all get it. I wondered if a member of your family tested positive and you didn't keep separate from them, did you all get it and how soon?

Only dh tested as he’s one of those that always has a bit of a cough but he was negative. The kids showed no symptoms. I didn’t distance.

It’s very likely I got it from one of them as I’ve mostly been at home

VashtaNerada · 29/11/2020 08:01

Ours was in that gap when they stopped testing but very likely to have been Covid as it was following contact with others who did test positive and very classic symptoms for us. Out of four family members two were ill, two had no symptoms. No idea if they caught it and were asymptomatic or if they didn’t catch it though.

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 29/11/2020 08:04

No advice op but I would do exactly the same as you as we have little ones too.

happinessischocolate · 29/11/2020 08:13

I'd do the same as you OP

In a workplace of over 200 people, one colleague had to self isolate as his wife tested positive but he repeatedly tested negative and had no symptoms, and 2 other colleagues tested positive but none of people they worked closely with got it. These 3 people were in completely separate departments and had no contact with each other.

There doesn't seem to be much logic in who will or won't get it 🤷‍♀️

brittanyfairies · 29/11/2020 08:18

I work in a nursery and I got it. No other positive cases at work, staff or children.

My DC have been tested twice now, when I tested positive and 1 week later and they didn't catch it either. We only have 1 bathroom so while I kept out of their way I couldn't isolate completely

WilsonandNoodles · 29/11/2020 08:19

We are currently isolating because my husband tested positive with symptoms. Me and my son have both had some symptoms ( mainly bad headaches for me) but I have tested negative.

BernieInn · 29/11/2020 08:21

The mother and three kids of a family on our street got it - however, the father didn't despite it not being possible to socially distance in their house and there being plenty of interaction. He puts it down to being the only person in the house taking regular supplements of Vitamin D and Vitamin C.

Bleaktimes · 29/11/2020 08:23

One child tested positive while the rest of our family didn’t get it (no symptoms).

Also, both DH and I still at work before child tested positive, no colleagues seemed to get it/displayed symptoms.

notevenat20 · 29/11/2020 08:31

I know two families where only one of the four got it. It was the 11 year old son in one family and the mother in the other. Go figure.

middleager · 29/11/2020 08:38

My teen son has tested positive. It's his last day in isolation today, the rest of us have four more to go, but no symptoms so far (probably jinx it now).

We're being strict though as he's older, so he's mainly in his room and is using the main bathroom to himself, goes into the garden once a day. We wear face asks, wash his plates in dishwasher etc. But my other son is asthmatic which generally presents when he catches viruses/colds etc so we are trying to be cautious. Impossible of course with a toddler and in your position I'd do the same.

My friend with a teen has mixed with theirs. They haven't caught it, but the daughter was asymptomatic (she tested at the schools request that the whole class test and they were most surprised!).

XiCi · 29/11/2020 08:43

Younger 2 children tested positive. Myself, DH and older 2 didnt get the virus. Know numerous people when virus was rife here in September whose partners or children got it but they didnt. I read somewhere that there is only a 14% chance of contracting it from a positive person in your household so its by no means certain you will all get it.

middleager · 29/11/2020 09:00

Are you sure it's only 14%?

The NHS guidance states there is a 'high chance' sorry OP, not meant to scare - we have Covid in the house ourselves - but used this high risk to prepare ourselves just in case.
However, lots of real life examples of others not catching it (or certainly not displaying symptoms) so fingers crossed for us all.

Bettyboop82 · 29/11/2020 09:11

My three year old had it last month (persistent cough the only symptom) and the other 4 of us in the house didn’t! He was coughing all over me, sitting on my knee, sleeping next to me and also his sister....!strange!

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 29/11/2020 09:15

Three of us had it in this house in the earlier days. We wondered if DD was asymptomatic as she didn’t show any symptoms but when she went to Uni in September she caught it so I presume she didn’t have it the first time.

Todaytomorrow09 · 29/11/2020 09:19

I know 2 families where husband or wife got it but not the partner or children.
I have a family member who works in a care home has cared for covid patients never got it until she finally had a two week break in September stayed in a caravan site - socially distancing/outside walks / didn’t eat in restaurants - came back from holiday with Covid.
I don’t understand it (as I’m not s scientist) but there does seem to be many other factors about catching the virus.

yearinyearout · 29/11/2020 09:19

We are currently isolating because my husband tested positive with symptoms. Me and my son have both had some symptoms ( mainly bad headaches for me) but I have tested negative.

Have they not suggested another test?

ShowOfHands · 29/11/2020 09:22

My dc both had it, but DH and I didn't. I didn't distance from them at all, in fact ds was glued to me.

DS tested positive 16 days after his sister became unwell so remember incubation periods can be looooong.

frosted232 · 29/11/2020 09:23

It's interesting to hear how not everyone in the same household gets it. We are led to believe it's extremely contagious and wearing masks helps stop the spread as does not going to places like pubs yet surely there's no closer contact than the people who live together? I'm not saying it doesn't exist before anyone starts, but it does make you wonder if the measures put in place are too strict if people are managing to avoid it after being holed up with a positive person for 14 days.

Redact · 29/11/2020 09:41

My neighbours, the DH and 3 dc all got it but the dw didn't, despite looking after them all

DramaLlama12 · 29/11/2020 09:43

I had it back in the earlier days .. I share a house with DD , DS and DP , I was the only one
My daughter has been in close contact with someone who has tested positive, the school informed us last week . We all tested , we are all negative

Bakewell79 · 29/11/2020 09:52

My 14 yr old son tested positive after being a close contact with a confirmed case in school.

Myself and husband are on our last day of isolation today and at the moment we have not shown symptoms! We live in a really small terraced house, one bathroom and couldn’t really distance so we have just taken things as they come.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 29/11/2020 09:59

I had it, no one else in my family tested positive however I am convinced dh had it as in 11 years he has never had a cold and miraculously 2 days after I tested +ve he had cough, headache etc and felt dreadful. My youngest ds, I am also convinced he had it; he had no main symptoms (neither did I) but he had a really bad stomach for about 3/4 days at the same time as I was tested and that's apparently the #1 symptom in young children

pinkchampagne1 · 29/11/2020 10:02

My teenage son caught it from his dad (my ex) after spending the weekend with him. My DS only had a sore throat and blocked nose so I didn’t worry about Covid at first but on hearing that his father had tested positive I got him tested. His results came back positive so we all isolated. None of the rest of our household (DH, my older son or myself) caught it from him.

Stradivari · 29/11/2020 10:06

@frosted232 it’s bizarre isn’t it! You’d think it should rip through families without a care because of no masks or SD, not to mention some of the hysteria over surface transmission and yet it doesn’t

Baaaahhhhh · 29/11/2020 10:12

Lots of studies going on with super spreader theory. It may be that most people don't pass the virus on easily, but a very few will pass it on to everyone they meet.
