Ok, useful announcement, thanks Confused

Kakiweewee · 27/11/2020 22:34

Oooh. I'm finally under 40 BMI. Strangely excited that I'm not obese enough to be further forwards in the queue.

KitKatastrophe · 27/11/2020 22:49

Unsurprising. Studies have found obesity to be one of the highest risk factors. It goes some way to explaining the high death toll in the US and UK and the relatively low numbers in developing countries.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 27/11/2020 22:55

So they are at higher risk so should be offered a vaccine first.

danadas · 27/11/2020 23:01

Makes sense. Even for those that dont agree with it, if they are more likely to need hospital treatment/intensive care then that affects everyone including non Covid patients if resources are becoming seriously limited.

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 27/11/2020 23:15

Those with BMI >40 have been in the CV group all along.

Not sure why months old info has reappeared as 'news'

Mybedislisting · 27/11/2020 23:17

Yawn. There’s already a thread on this.

People with a bmi over 40 get offered the flu jab too

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 27/11/2020 23:22

Here's a thread about it from back in March

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3852429-Being-overweight-is-a-underlying-condition

gurglebelly · 27/11/2020 23:29

Yes this would be fairly obvious given that it has been highlighted as a major risk factor since March....

lljkk · 28/11/2020 00:52

Is anyone else wondering if very large persons need a bigger vaccine dose than lighter people, I mean, does that go with having more mass?

EffOrf · 28/11/2020 05:23

I thought they were already in the CV (not shielded) group which is just above my group, the over 60s.

DarceyDashwood · 28/11/2020 06:15

Why wouldn’t they? They are in the CV group and have been for months 🤷‍♀️

EffOrf · 28/11/2020 06:21

I also wondered this as they could be 3 times the weight
Smiling89 · 28/11/2020 06:31

@lljkk the immune system doesn't work like that.

Standard dose of the vaccine is fine.

Catsup · 28/11/2020 06:53

I particularly enjoyed the line.. 'It means morbidity obese Brits will get their hands on a jab before pregnant women'. Call me cynical but I'd guess most pregnant women will probably feel a damn sight happier about this than distraught they won't be pushed to the front of the line to trial it out instead? In fact I'd hazard a guess a lot of pregnant women may potentially prefer the option of a herd immunity from non pregnant individuals taking that bullet for them, vs opting for the potential unknown ramifications of a vaccine on unborn babies? Especially when history hasn't passed thar far along after thalidomide was dished out.

Wobblysausage · 28/11/2020 07:01

Bloody fatties stealing all our jabs!

satnighttakeaway · 28/11/2020 07:12

No one is being pushed to the front of a queue, it's a line you join by choice and your last sentence is totally stupid, do you seriously think that drug testing and approval is stuck in the 1950s?

Well done in weight loss. Not easy to achieve during these right times especially when we can't get out and about as much. Thanks
Gingerkittykat · 28/11/2020 07:38

Waiting for the fat shaming to begin.......

I don't know why anyone is surprised, people with a BMI over 40 have had a flu jab for the past couple of years and were included on the clinically vulnerable list.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 28/11/2020 09:29

'One in eight adults in the UK are classed as morbidly obese – the fattest category – or about 2million people.'

From the linked article. One in eight Confused

That's a bit of a shock, to be honest. I would have thought it would have been lower than that. (Not fat shaming, I have been obese myself). There's a very well established link between morbid obesity and increased risk of covid-19, so this is based on clinical need. Can't see any problem with it myself.
lljkk · 28/11/2020 11:30

"One in eight adults in the UK are classed as morbidly obese – the fattest category – or about 2million people."

My math is crap, but aren't there more than 16 million adults in the UK?

lljkk · 28/11/2020 11:43

Ah, this is better
from UK Parliament
" Of obese adults, around one in eight are morbidly obese (3.6% of all adults)."

And ~29% of adults are obese.

RegularHumanBartender · 28/11/2020 11:45

Bloody fatties stealing all our jabs

It won't be long before people start saying this seriously! I can see the threads on here already. Heavy use of the word selfish I predict.

Baileysforchristmas · 28/11/2020 12:07

I think this is a very good time for everyone to look at their diet and life style and make changes. We should all try and be healthier.
