I still feel there will be at least another six months before things are normal
@Crazycatlady83 but why would people take the vaccine if they are not at risk especially if it doesn’t stop you catching it? I know quite a few people that have had it and 90% of them have been fine.
Because everyone IS at risk. Because it does stop you catching it and that's what vaccines are for and because most people are not idiots.

hopefulhalf · 27/11/2020 15:08

NHS worker here. I am picking up 25 lateral flow tests next week so will be tested twice weekly going forward, also our medical director said they would start vaccination in 2 weeks time. I'm feeling optimistic.

GerardWay123 · 27/11/2020 15:11

Slightly off topic but incredibly important. So much of the things we buy, sell come from China. There was a massive backlog when China locked down. That caused a major problem for retailers here. Now we have container ships stuck out at sea because China suddenly started production very quickly but the UK cannot bring them into port.
When they do it could be anywhere. The logistics are a nightmare.

@kittensarecute

I need my normality back, I just can't do this anymore, I've started self-harming - I've got nothing to be here for, I can't do my beloved theatre which is my passion in life, I can't even hug my best friend, I've got nothing to look forward to at all. I don't know why I'm still here.
I’m so sorry you’re feeling so down. It’s a shit situation. If you’re in the theatre then you bring a lot of joy to people with either your performance s or your backstage technical know how, so please let thoughts of a happy future sustain you for now. 💐

I work in the nhs. We're gearing up for the vaccination clinics. They're asking for staff to cover the clinics. The initial date was 9th December. Whenever the MHRA gives us the green light we'll be ready.

Our hospital has provided lateral flow tests for every staff member who wants them. Twice per week. Its a game changer.

Things will start to improve.

x2boys · 27/11/2020 15:22

I think things will starting to get back to normal after Easter
My mum is elderly at 78 ,she was three when the war ended ,it was her mum and dad who had evacuees ,sadly my grandad died at at the age of 41 but my Grandma lived to 90 and has been dead for 20 years!

AlecTrevelyan006 · 27/11/2020 15:45

Depends on what you define as normal

Until till I can sit in a full theatre or go to a live gig without having to wear a mask and without any social distancing I don’t consider that we will be back to normal

My wife works for a small chain of garden centres - loads of there Xmas stuff that was due to arrive early November (having already been delayed since September) is currently on a freight ship outside Felixstowe where it’s been queuing for more than a week. She’s heard that they might be able to dock early next week - it will then take a further week or so to get it in stores.
SlopesOff · 27/11/2020 16:03

Is Boris lying?

Are his lips moving?

Yes.

middleager · 27/11/2020 16:05

I can't sit on a sofa with my family, no. My child has Covid so we are all apart in our house. It was on the back of a previous two week SI and my child is confined to his room and bathroom, food left outside.

This is a perpetual cycle of being confined now. He's not been able to leave the house for 10 weeks since September. Even when he was healthy, he had to self isolate four times as the school is rife with cases, and I'm talking three in his class alone. I'm not sure if anyone can picture that life for a 14 year old who loves school, or for us. He has been out of school more than in and we have forgotten what going to school is life. It's gutting.

My other teen, well he's had to self isolate for four weeks. With the crossovers, that's 10.weeks as a family we haven't even been able to go for a walk together, let alone anywhere.

This is in addition to not seeing any loved ones as it's too risky with the dozens of cases in both boys' secondaries in a hard hit area.

When yesterday's tier 3 here was announced I thought it sounded like freedom for those of us who can't even leave the house.

So no, it's not just watching a bit of Netflix.

The proposed vaccine schedule would have all over 50's and many younger vaccinated by Easter

For the sake of all who want it straight away I do hope so, but aren't a lot of carts being put before horses here?

It's one of those times I'd love to be wrong, but given the mess that's been made of so much else do folk really think the rollout will go smoothly? As said before, best just hope they don't give it to Dido to oversee

Baileysforchristmas · 27/11/2020 16:49

@middleager wow my daughter hasn’t been sent home once yet from secondary school, let alone self isolate for 14 days, we have all been carrying on as normal as possible. Where abouts in the country are you?

lollipoprainbow · 27/11/2020 16:57

I agree I felt quite upbeat in the week when he spoke about the vaccines etc now I feel fed up again !!

The key is that the Oxford vaccine gets approved and actually works on old and vulnerable people.

If and when that transpires to be the case then that's the biggest obstacle. The preparations to roll it out have been there for a while. It won't go without a hitch but they're aiming for a million a day. Even a million a week would see us in a good place by Easter if it's all systems go by the new year.

KitKatastrophe · 27/11/2020 17:23

@Baileysforchristmas

I can imagine a lot of people don’t want it to go back to how it was before. I know someone who has been in Dubai for most of his time he was furloughed, he has to come back to work on the 2nd, he’s not happy about it. My life hasn’t changed much so I don’t find it to bad. I’ll be glad when all the busy bodies can’t be telling everyone what to do anymore.
Oh poor dear, having to go back to work after his 9 month paid holiday
Witchend · 27/11/2020 17:33

You mean "This is not the beginning of the end; merely the end of the beginning"?

Witchend · 27/11/2020 17:37

@Baileysforchristmas

I could have said neither of my dc at secondary school had been sent home yet 2 days ago.

Now one of them is at home (with his year as there's evidence of it spreading within the year) , there's over 30% of the rest of the school and staff isolating, they've said from Monday another year is also off for the same reason.
Of the other two local secondaries, another shut on Monday totally, but before that I only knew one person from there who'd isolated, and the other local secondary is looking likely to close next week.

It's a good thing we're a low area isn't it?

MadameBlobby · 27/11/2020 17:39

@tortoiseshell1985

I agree don't think vaccine going get approved I physically can't stand more Whitty misery He's enjoying his moment of fame I think
Me too, if I never have to see him, Vallance or Jason Leitch again it will still be about a million years too soon. Sick of the sight of the lot of them.

I think once the vaccine starts to be rolled out to the vulnerable and we get into the spring we’ll see the beginning of the end.

BecomeStronger · 27/11/2020 17:39

@PaperTowels

I think that getting to spring will help a lot.
That's what I said this year Grin

Birmingham.
I think this is part of the problem that for some, many things we take for granted (like going to school) continue, and for others it's carnage in schools.
Mine are both y10 and will sit the same exams as those without disruption.
It's really knocked his confidence too. There's no guarantee they can do a week at school, it was two days after the last SI and they were home again, only with Covid!

This is what the Govt don't or won't see as I'm sure they're basing their line that schools are fine on the ones who've had few or zero cases.
It's an absolute mess here.

Baileysforchristmas · 27/11/2020 17:52

@middleager i’m so shocked at how bad it is. My daughter is year 10, I hope she can stay at school for another couple of weeks, then break up for Christmas, she loves school, she’s a different child since going back. I hope your son gets better soon.

KitKatastrophe · 27/11/2020 18:11

Yes people are weirdly dumb about how long ago the war was. I’ve seen people talk about people in their 60s as having fought for us

But conscription continued until the early 60s and we were involved in wars after the end of WW2 throughout the 50s, 60s and 70s.

People in their 60s now wouldnt have been conscripted in the early 1960s. They would have been young children.

OpheliasCrayon · 27/11/2020 18:13

I'm not remotely bothered. I go to work, my kids go to school. I see my husband tons as he isn't commuting. I can't have the vaccine anyway. And I hate hugs.
Only thing I want is more certainty that kids won't suddenly have to be out of school and can get on with their education and playdates. Oh and I want to go swimming

middleager · 27/11/2020 18:17

Thank you. It's so hard as he loves school, he shines. Two year 10s sent home regularly is destroying to the soul. I can see the one deflating before my eyes.

KitKatastrophe · 27/11/2020 18:19

@WhoWants2Know

I'm not sure they actually give a shit about people catching it or being hospitalised and dying, as long as those numbers are kept at a level where the NHS is still basically functioning.

I think they will rush the vaccine, lift restrictions and pat themselves on the back

From the beginning this has been about protecting the NHS. The government arent supposed to care about individuals being hospitalised and dying, they're looking on a community level. If they were held responsible for stopping as many deaths as possible, they would be banning smoking, drinking, driving, fast food and extreme sports.
