Do you think this will all end in another lockdown in January, or just a continuation of the tier system?

We (the UK) have more deaths per million population than America.

We have a population of 67 million.
70,000 deaths.

USA has a population of 331 million.
274,000 deaths.

Our deaths per million = 851.87
USA deaths per million = 798.97

Oh i see.

SheepandCow · 28/11/2020 01:04

There are only 4 countries with a higher death rate than us: Belgium, Peru, Spain, and Italy.

sleepwouldbenice · 28/11/2020 01:07

@SheepandCow

Both were needed. Testing alone doesn't stop the spread. And, only 50% of the population had a test in Liverpool.

I suspect it was in part due to better compliance with restrictions. Perhaps the high hospitalisation and death rate brought it home to people. That, and the sad death of the mayor's brother. Perhaps also good morals and a concern and respect for the vulnerable, and NHS workers.

Yes it definitely wasn’t just the mass testing although it played a role. All of the Liverpool city region went into tier 3 but only the city had mass testing yet all areas rates reduced significantly And this started before lockdown

I do think the hospitalisations and publicity helped. Not entirely convinced on the morals, usual mix of idiots everywhere I am afraid

@OverTheRainbow88

Looks like America is suffering because of thanksgiving
Thanksgiving was 2 days ago, surely it's way too early to make that assessment?

All of 36 hours ago .....

There are only 4 countries with a higher death rate than us: Belgium, Peru, Spain, and Italy.

According to the WHO, we are 7th, not 5th. We were 8th until, I think, yesterday, when we overtook Argentina.

But it's definitely disproportionate to our number of cases. We're 'only' about 45th in the world for number of cases (and in reality quite likely lower as we have done more testing than most). I think our terrible death rate must be down to:

  • many people who have died of Covid in the UK would have died years ago if they lived in some other countries (ie in some countries life expectancy is only 60 and there is no decent care for chronic or life limiting health conditions so many countries just don't have a large number of cv and ecv people to start with.)
  • population density
  • a kind inbuilt feeling of 'But we're British. Bad things won't happen to us!' which stops people taking Covid seriously enough.

And the fact that we have high rates of obesity.
manicinsomniac · 28/11/2020 17:25

Oh yes, that too. Forgot that one.

babayaga22 · 28/11/2020 17:32

Why would we lock down again?

Lockdowns patently don't work.

What do you think we’re trying to achieve with lockdowns Hmm?

Because they definitely do work to reduce infection numbers. It’s literally 101 infection control for any contagion.

nosswith · 28/11/2020 17:59

I think we may have Tier 3 in more areas, or continuing in some of them for a long time.

yeOldeTrout · 29/11/2020 09:27

I am going to predict now localised spikes but not national spikes in cases/deaths after Christmas.
