Could this be COVID? Did your child have these symptoms?

My DS got a rash around a week and a half ago. Spread all over his trunk it's everywhere. It was red at first and like of sandpapery and now has faded into circular blobs and looks flaky. No pain and only slightly itchy.

Last night he had a headache and today is feeling really nauseous.

Any ideas what it could be? Is it COVID? Should I call Dr?

@SadSecretSanta I booked COVID test this morning when he got the temperature. Yeah we are all staying at home.

Hi op, this was in the bbc, it also mentions a delay in the rash appearing.

www.bbc.com/news/health-52493574

I think keep as much of an eye on him as possible, hydrated and comfortable.

Maybe plan out when he can have calpol to the full dose over 24 hours so that the night time is ok. I have tried to time it so they get some in the two halves of the night, if possible in the past, as they often seem a bit better in the morning whereas can get quite hot at night.

NeurotrashWarrior · 23/11/2020 21:15

It also reiterates that viruses can give all sorts of random rashes. My eldest was a class act in presenting me with weird rashes.

Is he up to date with all injections too?

JS87 · 23/11/2020 21:16

It doesn’t look like the scarlet fever rash dS had. The spots were smaller and closer together.
Good idea to get a test but it could be any viral rash.
Have you done the glass check for meningitis? Doesn’t look like meningitis rash but would be good to check.

pizzatoday · 23/11/2020 21:25

I think he's up to date with injections. He had all the usual baby and toddler ones. He got his flu spray last year but he was off school this year when the consent form was sent so hasn't had that. His class had it on Friday so actually glad he didn't get it with this fever.

He's in bed now. Before bed he said his eyeballs feel like they are too far back. HmmHmm but no pain or nausea or sore anything.

OP my child had same rash. Came and went over a period of time and didn’t respond to antihistamines. Unfortunately it did turn out to be covid.
111 were fantastic when we called. Rash had spread to face, eyelids and lips/mouth area so they wanted child checked over. Again didn’t respond to antihistamines but all other checks were fine.

SadSecretSanta · 23/11/2020 21:35

It could of course be nothing, and it just passes. My son used to always get rashes, and they’d come and go.p, sometimes with a temperature and sometimes not.

NeurotrashWarrior · 23/11/2020 21:45

I hope he has a restful night and his eyeballs are a little more in place in the morning Thanks

and a v small sip of Gin for you.

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 23/11/2020 22:28

I've definitely heard the eyeballs thing for covid. Once on here and once from a friend of a friend.

pizzatoday · 23/11/2020 23:48

His eyes are definitely red. I had viral conjunctivitis once it's like that.

Rash is still there. It's slightly raised some rough feeling pink circular. On his shoulders, chest, back, abdomen, sides.

I gave him calpol before bed and temp is normal now. It was scary when it was 39.5 and 40.6.

I'm worried what it could be. COVID, the multi inflammatory syndrome, some other infection.

OP posts:
pizzatoday · 24/11/2020 09:15

His eyes hurt when he moves them and they are heavy looking and he's tired.

Temperature still 38, not given Calpol yet.

OP posts:
Keepdistance · 24/11/2020 10:08

Are his eyes gunky or just red?

pizzatoday · 24/11/2020 10:17

@Keepdistance Just red, and he says his eyeballs/head hurts when he looks up or down or to the sides. He's tired and lacking in energy but not overly lethargic. Temp around 38.

Got better pics of the rash.

Rash

OP posts:
pizzatoday · 24/11/2020 10:23

It's also on the crease of one of his inner arms and in the creases of both sides of his groin.

If his eyes werent red when he was seen by ambulance/talked to gp you may want to call back and tell them about that too

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 24/11/2020 10:29

Sorry if I've missed it but have you phoned 111. I wouldn't be assuming COVID if it was mine.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 24/11/2020 10:29

Sorry cross posted I see that you have had him seen.

pizzatoday · 24/11/2020 10:46

His eyes been red and heavy since yesterday, so I guess they did see it. He's playing a game now so a bit perked up.

I think the rash is 'pityriasis rosea' it fits every description of it. Unsure if COVID related or not, but the fact it came up ten days ago with no other symptoms, almost went away by middle of last week, and then came back yesterday with new symptoms of persistent high fever, headache, nausea, red sore eyes. That makes me worry about the inflammatory syndrome some kids get after COVID.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 24/11/2020 10:55

I would get medical advice again and highlight that that is what you are worried about. GP not 111.

Cinderellashoes · 24/11/2020 11:00

I would seek medical advice and ask directly could it be this?

Dos the rash start with one large area that almost looked like roundworm? Thats the herald spot and could mean it is pityriasis rosea if so. My daughter had that over the summer, but she was never "ill" will it, no temp etc.
pizzatoday · 24/11/2020 11:27

I'm not sure about a herald patch, he does have sensitive skin. I did think it was ringworm at first, it did start off like that. I know it's not now though. He had extensive ringworm as a toddler.

Aw op its just awful at the minute not being able to seek medical help when we feel it is needed. It does look like a viral rash to me but I am definitely not a doctor! I think you are doing everything right and it will be interesting to see the result of the cv test. This absolutely could be covid or it could be any other virus doing the rounds.

If you are concerned, I would try the GP again. Surely they could at least review the rash and all symptoms on a video call or email pics or something?
