Not a fan of the DM but thankfully and finally reliable data and facts are being reported.
People should be angry about how misleading the government has been.

Ha, this guy gets it too...

Some sections of the media are now committed to showing the misinformation of Covid data. I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.
It’s everything many of us have been saying.
Not playing down the Covid threat, simply asking for truthful reporting of the figures.

Whilst I am very much of the opinion that covid isn't worth all this ...

"Daily mail" "reliable data and facts"

They're..... Really not two things that go together. Whilst I'd love to believe this as I do think it's somewhat true... I would need much more reliable facts

idontknowaboutmortgages · 21/11/2020 10:54

The graph titled 'Beds aren't fuller' is comparing the average of the whole of November (2015-2019) with one week in 2020. How is that a fair comparison? What is the agenda here?

GoldenOmber · 21/11/2020 11:02

The ICU bed occupancy is also misleading because it shows the % of capacity filled, not the raw number. Increase capacity - as hospitals have done - and the % can go down while the raw numbers go up.

OR it’s all a dastardly government plot to steal our freedom, of course. That sounds much more plausible I’m sure Hmm

raviolidreaming · 21/11/2020 11:05

The issue with 'underlying health conditions' is that it doesn't account for life expectancy had that person not contracted covid. Is a 35 year old with diabetes an acceptable death because they had an underlying health condition? A 45 year old with asthma? A 70 year old with stable angina who was otherwise fit and active? Underlying health conditions doesn't mean that death was imminent. People aren't expendable because they aren't in perfect health.

DumplingsAndStew · 21/11/2020 11:08

Didn't they forecast those figures if there were no restrictions in place? The actual statistics are gathered from a scenario where there ARE restrictions in place. So how can anyone come forward and say "see, told you it wouldn't be so bad!" Hmm

BoulangerieBabs · 21/11/2020 11:18

Dear god if people have so little critical thinking ability that they can't work out what's wrong with this article then I truly despair.

Exactly. I hate how having an underlying condition is being worded by many,

Daily Mail.

Nuff said

FreedomIS · 21/11/2020 11:44

There is a particular group of people who will not believe 2 + 2 = 4 if you tell them it was printed in the Mail. And it’s not a small group either.

Critical thinking is having the ability to realize that a virus is being politicized.
@BoulangerieBabs

Science is being suppressed for political and financial gain. Covid-19 has unleashed state corruption on a grand scale, and it is harmful to public health.

"only 13 per cent of NHS beds are occupied by patients with Covid-19."

13% is huge!! Sheesh, it was 0% a year ago.

The whole point of current strategy is to make any other form of health care possible, not be overwhelmed by covid patients. If we get to 73% of beds being occupied by covid patients then we would be in utter meltdown. Car accident, stroke, broken leg? Oh well, you're stuffed. Stay home because no space at the hospital to help you out.

Shitzngiggles · 21/11/2020 11:53

@raviolidreaming well said. I'm so sick of hearing oh well they had underlying health conditions, they were gonna die anyway. People can live for years with health problems and still lead fulfilling productive lives. I'm sure that the people who play this down are the ones that are actually scared shitless of the virus. Easier to pretend it's not real or not that bad

So not a fan of the daily fail until they print "facts" that fit your viewpoint.

Too many "could"s in that article which is the language the gutter press use so they don't end up in court for liable or misinformation.

But let's take a step back. Who benefits from Covid-19 restrictions? Because for all their numptiness it's not the government the Tories don't want a free-fall economy. Why would medics advise that they are unable to juggle usual services? They know that cancelling operations doesn't make them become unnecessary just complicates future treatment.

I just don't see who benefits from any of this. There are far too many people involved for any conspiracy to be viable.

Covid-19 does not mean hospitalisation for the vast majority, but for a significant percentage, significant because Covid is infectious so many can catch it in a short period of time, it does mean medical treatment is required. Quite complicated medical treatment.

Luckily we are not a society, even with the Tories in charge, that lets the elderly and diabetics suffocate in the street. Which is what this is primarily all about.

As the daily mail is presently finding it difficult to stir up outrage about brexit, immigrants or overpaid football players, they are trying to stir up outrage about Covid, clickbait for advertisers so their offshore tax haven owners can keep the dollars rolling in.

Like any article in any newspaper it’s tilted to what they want you to believe

Look at the posts above that question the ‘facts’ here

Deaths from influenza/pneumonia:
Yes I know it isn’t COVID! But ...

1976 - 62,357
1999 - 60,018
1997 - 57,271
1982 - 57,220
2000 - 56,623
1983 - 56,192
1995 - 55,828
2017 - 50,100

Has the government handled this the right way?

Would it be possible to cite your source? I mean if you're going to convince us that we've been had then you're going to have to provide more than a copy and paste of some figures...
conkersarebonkers · 21/11/2020 13:29

Here's a table by PHE of Flu deaths from 2015 to present: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/895233/Surveillance_Influenza_and_other_respiratory_viruses_in_the_UK_2019_to_2020_FINAL.pdf#page=54

Found via this article, which includes this: "Public Health England estimated that over the 2017/18 flu season, there were around 22,000 deaths associated with flu in England. This was one of the highest flu death tolls in recent years, but is still significantly lower than the current death toll from Covid."

Exactly. It's as though people take this to mean they were all going to die in the next few weeks anyway, which obviously for the vast majority won't be anywhere near true.
Jaxhog · 21/11/2020 13:50

Not much consolation for those of us with underlying conditions or who are over 65. Or both. I am very unlikely to die from Flu or Pneumonia in the next year - I have been vaccinated for both. But death from Covid feels much more likely.

Please don't use this as an excuse for ignoring the rules.

Igglepiggle78 · 21/11/2020 14:00

@FreedomIS Completely agree with you and find it’s becoming beyond annoying to be unable to pose any kind of open discussion on here about it without people saying ‘What’s the agenda here?’ The real agenda is with the government and no that’s not a conspiracy theory. This is becoming beyond ridiculous now and many countries are now (finally) seeing this and legal action is being taken by courts.
Yes it’s a nasty disease (I have long covid myself and it’s bloody awful) but the measures being taken are unbelievable.
The people unable to see this and defending the measures will cost us our economy, our children’s futures, our physical and mental health. This needs to be discussed, not shut down.

FreedomIS · 21/11/2020 14:09

@conkersarebonkers

“The number of winter deaths last year the hit highest level in more than 40 years after the failure of last year's flu jab. There were an estimated 50,100 excess winter deaths in England and Wales in 2017/18 - the highest recorded since winter 1975/76, figures from the Office for National Statistics show. 30 Nov 2018”

@Igglepiggle78

I know. I wish people could see the bigger picture, think longterm and realize the collateral damage that lockdowns cause.

But of course the government got it wrong. They assumed it was a virus that would wipe out 5-10% of the population. It became apparent it wasn’t, but rather than admit they got it wrong and sunk the economy for nothing, they will drag out this ‘war’ for the foreseeable to save face.
