Has coronavirus killed celebrity culture?

Recently I have been thinking that the diversion of the global pandemic has distracted attention away from celebrity culture.

It even occurred to me that Caroline Flack might be here today if the pandemic happened a couple of months earlier as the media would probably not have pursued her today to the extent they did then.

What are your thoughts?

Very interesting. I’ll bite. I agree but I don’t think celebrities have realised yet.

Nc135 · 19/11/2020 22:50

If there are any silver linings then this would be one

Smellbellina · 19/11/2020 22:52

That’s a really sad thought about CF.
Considering the things they didn’t charge my ex over the CPS completely used her.

NeutralJanet · 19/11/2020 22:55

I doubt the press attention on Caroline Flack would have been any different given the huge amounts of coverage the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard stuff has had this year.

Letsgetgoing888 · 19/11/2020 22:58

I think that celebrity culture was one of the reasons that distancing went out of the window in the summer.

Seeing people on holiday, in photos not distancing, partying didn’t really set the right tone.

monkeytennis97 · 19/11/2020 22:58

I felt this very strongly at the beginning of the pandemic. Celebs totally dropped off the radar. I thought it was great actually.

What with IACGMOOH and Strictly etc I don't think it will, people need a distraction.

I agree there has been media coverage on the Depp story, but believe the end user may have been less likely to be following with interest as there are far more important things to be concerned about which would affect the public personally.

Or rather chief advisors breaking the rules they set...

Yes and that definitely

I think Covid has focused our attention on what really matters. We've been too worried to care about whatever the Kardashians etc are doing. We might also have changed our priorities regarding who we look up to - celebrities look more trivial than ever when you compare them to people working on Covid wards without proper PPE!
I'd like to think it will last but people are shallow, so I doubt it. Once the crisis is over, I think it will be business as usual

Rabbitholebonkers · 20/11/2020 08:36

It won’t last.

User158340 · 20/11/2020 08:38

People still obssessing over I'm a Celeb, Strictly or Johnny Depp's court case.

It won't make any difference.

I don't get the impression people are obsessive in the same way. I think people look forward to these shows just purely for entertainment purposes, not to stalk individual celebrities on social media.

I hope it lasts too and agree people have shifted to admiring those who have really made a difference and helped to save lives and keep society going. The status of supermarket, delivery drivers etc has been elevated in my own eyes for sure.

@namethief Maybe. I've no interest in celebs or the shows but I think during this year the normal celeb lifestyle is off limits which makes them more like the rest of us. I.e. fairly boring.

A lot of people like to live vacariously through others.

Dustballs · 20/11/2020 12:32

I hope so.

cologne4711 · 20/11/2020 16:34

I was hoping that, but it seems the influencers are still out there peddling their vacuous nonsense...

drumandthebass · 20/11/2020 16:45

I hope so

nevernotstruggling · 20/11/2020 16:52

I'm hopeful it's killed sleb culture but I'm enjoying the amusing desperation right now. Amanda Holden posted a pic of her in a bikini or a ballooned almost daily it was super cringe 😂

Joswis · 20/11/2020 16:54

NNS, I was just thinking, I'd pay good money to never hear about Amanda-bloody-Holden again. Vacuous woman.

nevernotstruggling · 20/11/2020 17:26

@Joswis as would I. Even a direct debit each month!!!

WitchesSpelleas · 20/11/2020 17:28

Sadly, no.

Bouledeneige · 20/11/2020 17:31

I wish it were true. Hopefully some of them will bore off and get a proper job.

DixitWinner · 20/11/2020 17:32

@nevernotstruggling - I was just about to mention the pictures of Amanda Holden putting her bins out whilst wearing a ball gown. #desperate Grin

DixitWinner · 20/11/2020 17:33

*ballgown even, auto correct isn’t keen on that

LadyCatStark · 20/11/2020 17:38

Kind of, they can’t do their usual stuff on Instagram and I imagine a lot of companies have cut their marketing budget too. I was shocked to see Jennifer Aniston doing the whole ‘insta collar’ thing the other day. I mean, she’s Jennifer Aniston!
