To think a lack of taste and smell from an apparent cold doesn’t need a covid test.

Just that really. Probably a silly question. Feel like I have a cold. Snotty, sneezing and congested. No fever or cough. I feel fine in myself. Been home cleaning all day and have a near normal amount
of energy - maybe a little tired but been up since 5am.

Because I’m bunged up I can’t taste or smell properly! This is always a problem when I get a cold. I have ongoing problems with my sinuses too.

First time I’ve been any kind of ill since last Christmas. I know that my cold symptoms do not need a covid test but I assume my lack of taste or smell does not either because it’s quite obviously being caused by my cold!

Aibu?

I've currently got Covid, and the lack of taste and smell for me is different to a cold. My sense of taste started to go first, and 3 days after a positive result I can't taste a thing. Seriously, not a thing. My smell disappeared overnight and has completely gone now too. However, that said, I'd still get tested, as people do experience it differently. A friend of mine had it where everything tasted odd rather than losing her taste completely.

MsCrapola · 18/11/2020 21:46

I thought I had a cold and it was covid! Like PP, the loss of smell and taste was different to a cold though. Mine went in a few hours. One minute I could taste my lovely biscuit and that night I couldn't taste my mouthwash!!

Hope your test comes back negative Smile

brittanyfairies · 18/11/2020 21:48

I've tested positive today with ear ache and headache as my only symptoms.

I am testing my sense of taste with chocolate and all is well.Grin

HarrietOh · 18/11/2020 21:55

I thought I had a cold at first, just with a strange headache. My sense of smell went very suddenly and completely. It’s different to when it happens during a cold as it’s neurological rather than caused by having a stuffy/blocked nose.

GreyishDays · 18/11/2020 21:55

I’ve tested positive after noticing a loss of taste. It’s not complete though. I’m also very snotty and a bit sneezy (which I thought wasn’t a COVID symptom).
Good call to book a test.

MythsandSparkles · 18/11/2020 22:04

Everyone I know of who has tested positive recently has started with cold symptoms - and also tried to shrug it off as “just a cold”

I say everyone, I work in a super school, 1400 pupils on site and 3000 in the academy group...so there’s a lot of people to know of

BaconAndAvocado · 18/11/2020 22:24

I got tested last night due to a sudden lack of smell.

I had a flu type virus with no high temperature or cough for 5 days which ended yesterday morning. I started to feel completely normal but then whilst cooking dinner noticed that I couldn't smell the food.

After DD held an open jar of Marmite under my nose whilst I closed my eyes and I smelt nothing I knew something was wrong.

Got tested and am awaiting results. I feel absolutely fine.

You should definitely get a test. It's one of the major symptoms.

MushMonster · 18/11/2020 22:27

You do need to ask for a test.
It could be a simple cold, but fits one of the covid symptoms for which you have to isolate.

Bookworming · 18/11/2020 22:33

OP Should I take a test?

EVERYONE - yes

OP but I don't need one!

Bangs head on wall!!

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 18/11/2020 22:51

Same symptoms, tested positive. Get tested.

It can be any change to sense of taste or smell not always a loss of according to test & trace.

ConorMasonsWife · 19/11/2020 04:42

I have a positive result and I'm very congested OP. I would just to be safe.

Jgb12 · 19/11/2020 05:51

@Bookworming my god calm down love. Never said I wasn’t booking a test! 🤣

Bookworming · 19/11/2020 07:40

@Jgb12 book one then love?

I also didn't say you weren't going to get one love, I said you said you didn't neeeeeeed one!

Takes five minutes to sort love, so stop delaying?

Jgb12 · 19/11/2020 08:32

Already booked! Assuming I haven’t booked it yet? What a delight you are jumping to conclusions. I know it only takes 5 minutes. DS had a test back a couple months ago too (negative) so I know how it works.

You’re right I said I likely don’t need one but never said I wasn’t getting one. Personally I don’t think I have covid. I have a cold, sinus issues, jaw and wisdom teeth issues all in one. Something I suffer with. They often go hand in hand. High chance it’ll be negative especially as there’s next to no cases in my area and I haven’t been been out 🤷‍♀️

if you don't want to take a test, that's up to you - but you should still isolate without a clear test.

GwenCooper81 · 19/11/2020 08:38

Fingers crossed its negative. I had 'sinitus' no sense of smell or taste and a 'head cold'. A friend tested positive. I took a test, completely convinced I just had blocked and sore sinuses. Positive result two days later. In swiftly got poorly and have only just started to feel myself again (6 weeks later!)

Jgb12 · 19/11/2020 08:41

@GwenCooper81 thank you. My symptoms whatever they are are definitely very mild. That mild I’ve still been able to get up and re start the painting in my house so I’m definitely not ‘poorly’ I can taste fine again this morning which is good too but who knows 🤷‍♀️🥰

Please test. Family of 4 here all positive. Symptoms are none of 3 listed. 9 year old totally clear. 14 year old just cough when standing lasted 2 days. 20 year old just exhausted. Me ive got sickness and diarrhoea and sinus pain and dizziness.

cologne4711 · 19/11/2020 08:49

Usually when I have a cold I lose my taste/smell because my nose is blocked.

I think the loss of taste and smell with covid is different, and you would notice the difference (unless you have a cold and covid at the same time, I suppose!)

I agree that the results of the tests take too long - and getting a test. You should be able to get a test on the same day (or following morning if eg you ask for one after I dunno, 4pm or something) and get the result within a couple of hours. Therefore needing no more than two days off work or school maximum if negative. I was hoping that after the trials in Liverpool they'd roll out faster tests.

Such drama, over a simple test!

Good you've booked and then you'll know for sure, won't you love?

NoSleepInTheHeat · 19/11/2020 09:35

There seems to be so much conflicting info there really isn't, loss or change to your sense of smell or taste is one of the main symptoms and you are supposed to get tested if you have it. Not just 'think about it'. Please don't mix with people until you have the results back.

Jgb12 · 19/11/2020 09:41

@NoSleepInTheHeat my original post was about that I always lose my sense of taste with a cold that’s all. I am very aware that it is a symptom.

I have booked a test and haven’t mixed with anyone anyway. Trust me when I say no one is at risk from my symptoms 🤷‍♀️ I’ve been at home decorating for a week + and get everything delivered. Hence why I though I caught the cold off Dd.

OP posts:
Seeline · 19/11/2020 10:00

There is always the chance that your DD didn't have a cold but had covid........

Jgb12 · 19/11/2020 10:03

Possibly but unlikely when she just had a runny nose and sneezing. School told me to send her in as usual on Monday because she didn’t have any of the official covid signs 🤷‍♀️

movingonup20 · 19/11/2020 10:04

The only symptom I had was loss of taste and smell (completely) get a test!
