It’s the small % of non mask wearers causing the problem. My DS just recovered from CV after customers at work without masks spent 30 mins coughing all over him during a sale, he hadn’t been anywhere or in contact with anybody so only place he could have caught it. Whole house had to isolate.

Tbh the masks etc don't mean jack if there is no social distancing.

I have had in the last 2 weeks despite me giving enough room people bumping into me or barging me who then TOUCH me to say sorry IN MY FACE. Stating it's ok they don't have Covid, and get offended when I try to back away to 2 metres.

Those customers being out with a cough against self isolation rules is the issue. Much less them not wearing a mask.

True...but if the mask doesn’t offer protection what’s the point in anyone wearing them? Would the outcome have been the same? I’m more furious as my DS needs an inhaler for a cold, thankfully it didn’t affect his chest.

I agree most people are following the rules. I think that's why we notice the few who dont.

Recent studies have shown that they do protect the wearer to an extent. There was an announcement by the CDC a few days ago. Plus it’s the law.

These surveys are meaningless unless they ask everyone in the UK. They base their findings on a pretty small number of people.

Bloody hell, look at my thread on family breaking lockdown rules! Says the complete opposite!

The survey at the end of September was based on 1800 responses out of 2200 people asked. We had more people than that packed on our local beach. If people are following the advice why do we see reports of parties and busy streets every weekend before anither lockdown starts.

Interesting that the question was about avoiding the elderly and vulnerable specifically and not about whether people have been mixing households. In fact stats about compliance on that measure are curiously absent from the quoted paragraph.

There are so many other rules regarding self isolation, OP. And I think that's where we are failing. People going out when asked to self isolate after holidays, which in my opinion has been a key factor in causing the second wave. People with symptoms and waiting for test results who go out. People who send kids to school when a member of the family has tested positive. People ignoring symptoms. People going out before the 14 days isolation when asked.

Yeah, because people are going to be 100% honest about their covid behaviour when answering a survey aren't they?

Just looking around, the streets, shops, neighbours, etc., shows that most people are complying generally, but certainly not those high levels as per the survey. Our neighbour has a stream of people staying over, (son and daughter yo-yoing between home and Uni and bringing boy/girl friends with them), her sister stayed over last weekend from hundreds of miles away. Another neighbour has just returned from a Canary Islands holiday and didn't isolate at all, and even had friends round a few times during the two weeks after return.

I see people breaking the rules regularly. I'm WFH and see it out of the window I'm facing every day.

I don't see anyone really breaking the rules. I think there's the odd quiet playdate under the guise of childcare which I can understand given that these kids are sharing a classroom anyway.

I wonder, too, how many people are fully complying with the advice to self isolate when required. I'm guessing that it is nowhere near 100%.

It seems to me that the statistics quoted in the OP only tell half the story. Realistically, there is a reason why we're in the middle of a second wave.

People aren't complying. It's very obvious this time round, and just because a few people in a survey say they're washing their hands (which isn't even really a rule) and wearing a mask, does not mean people are complying with the rules.

Ah, understood. And agreed. And I bet the people I'm referring to would say they're complying with the rules on a survey too.

Yep because our arms aren't long enough to administer eyedrops from our house, she is not able to move the fridge and washing machine to check on potential mice nor can she carry heavy shopping through, to name just a few reasons for our regular visits.
