Are we being prepared for an extension of the lockdown?

I return to the UK on 4th December, the day after lockdown ends. I noticed this report being discussed on BBC World an hour ago and it also popped up on social media. Do you think they are testing the waters regarding an extension?

Part of the rules for the second lockdown was that hotels can remain open to accommodate guests who need to stay overnight for work or somewhere to stay when moving house, keyworkers or people stuck due to any travel restrictions etc. They just can't accommodate people travelling for leisure purposes. Some hotels have closed anyway but not because they have to by law.

It seems like the sensible thing to do would be for secondary schools (with highest prevalence rate and highest rate of spread) close as parents of secondary children can still work, and re-open everything else.

Wales didn’t extend.

I think they'll close schools two weeks before Christmas.

Other than that, I reckon either Tier 3 or a new Tier 4 to see us all through December, then lockdown again in late January.

@Livelykittenmum

I think indoor mixing with 1 should be allowed.

It is allowed with a single person or single adult household it has been for months now as long you keep "bubbled" with the same household

Doesn’t really matter too much. We’ve been in tier 3/extra restrictions since august in Manchester. I’m hoping for better news in spring. I’d just like to keep my job, keep the kids in school & keep my parents safe as much as possible. I’m hopeful that we are seeing some light at the end of the tunnel

We will be mostly put into tier 3 which is similar to now in terms of no household mixing but other shops and hairdressers can re open ,afterall its the biggest economic time of the year in terms of spending

I cant see the entire country coming out restrictions on the 2nd. I think we will be back.in the teirs.

Realistically I think they will allow a window for Christmas shopping but I'm not hopeful beyound the 26th.

I'm not expecting much so I will be happy to be wrong. I am getting together a list in case the shops open. I'm getting much more used to not being able to go out to the shops now. But even a few weeks of shops opening would be nice.

Who knows anymore. Most rumours turn out be press leaks now 😥

Put it this way, the furlough scheme is till March, not till 2 December...

I don't think the current lockdown will continue. We'll go back to the tier system but all areas will be in tiers 2, 3 or 4. I'm guessing large parts of the economy will reopen but household mixing will still be very restricted for everyone.

Even under tier 3 not all businesses can re open, and some businesses might be having a smaller footfall than normal so not all staff required. Furlough doesn't necessarily mean the business isn't open at all just that they don't need all the usual amount of employees at this time.

I think they'll relax it just a bit - ie people can go and invest in the economy and get their christmas presents, etc, but I think the getting together at christmas will be just over the Christmas week, and with a minimum number of people - then lockdown again straight afterwards for a couple of weeks at least.

Friend who works in a publicly funded organisation has been told that lockdown will be extended by a week, and will almost certainly be reimposed in January.

The problem is that anyone with a brain cell does not follow these ridiculous "Roolz" anyway. They are for the brainwashed. Go and be human. I dare you!

I really really hope they don't close schools 2 weeks early.

I'm a 6th form teacher and all of our year 13 mocks start the first week of December. Within this there are also some actual assessments and a couple of subjects are doing actual exams.
We need them this year more than ever before. If those mocks don't happen, then that entire cohort will be seriously disadvantaged

They will end this one then do a different one, doesn't this one have to finish on the 2nd, so they will have to start a new slightly different one, probably tiers with a new higher tier added on like Scotland.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 15/11/2020 05:20

Furlough until March just means that they can lockdown easily at any time, anywhere without all the fuss they had with Manchester as it is already in place

A friend of mine was doing h&m for a high up government official (in Australia) who told her not to expect to leave the country for 3 or 4 years.

You will prob go for multi tiers - like scotland is doing. We are in their three and our numbers are following so shops are open - just. We have had no indoor mixing for weeks. It’s bloody awful

I predict that they'll end lockdown but put the whole country into tier 3 or a newly created tier 4 (whatever that might entail, same as now??)
Then secondary schools will go online for two weeks before Christmas and primary schools will close a week early for Christmas.
There'll be a temporary loosening on restrictions but only back as far as the rule of six. So still no parties or big family gatherings. Then January either back to tiers or another lockdown depending on how well the figures are going.
We just have to grit our teeth and get through to spring really I think!

Meh don’t give a shit tbh and don’t waste too much time thinking or worrying about it anymore - accepted a long time ago this year was cancelled and now am accepting it may run into next year - what can you do

Haven’t seen my parents in a year and won’t be flying home to them for Xmas now even if it is allowed as I don’t want to risk it or make them sick

They could add tier 5 and 6 too.

Uni students have been told to go home that week so I'm guessing they'll think that will reduce spread, although cases at many unis are miniscule

Tier 5 could be the same as lock down in March

Tier 6 - same as Spain, no exercise outdoors!

Hoping it doesn't get that bad.

I think that the lockdown will end on December 2nd (unless there is some catastrophic covid event), then everyone can have a 'sort of Christmas' but still with some restrictions on numbers and with Covid deaths rising exponentially during this period and then another lockdown will start on January 2nd.

I can image that lockdowns will happen intermittently during 2021, until all the most susceptible have died off unless a vaccine really is effective at controlling this.

Happy Christmas everyone.
