Everything is so normal! Well in my city it seems to be

I've nc for this. Because I'm going to say where I am.
I live in Southampton and honeslty apart from masks, odd shops starting to squirt sanitiser on our hands it all feels normal.
Fair amount of traffic. (expected school run times etc)
Parks are rammed.
Shops are busy, no distancing

I went to home bargains today and it was packed, Literally couldn't move.
And yes I was doing the same as everyone else. I'm not complaining I'm just saying how it felt normal.

Apart from one person on my fb who shares covid info everyday and is very by the rule. Everyone else seems to be still seeing people in groups, in and outdoors. Photos in pubs when they were open in huggy groups. Etc

I'm not perfect, I've gone out for non essentials for Xmas because I don't want to be I that manic rush in Dec.

I just feel its pretty normal if it wasn't for following the news I could actually belive there wasn't a pandemic.

Is this the same elsewhere?

You have sort of answered your own question, " i'm not perfect" and "I went to home bargains today" a fair percentage of people are the same hence why it feels like lockdown lite.

Christmaspud20 · 12/11/2020 22:38

Very good point. I did get toiletries etc which was main object of going but I did browse for a fair while for bits for the kids.

I was in central London yesterday for an appointment and it was much quieter...bridges that are normally teeming pretty much deserted. Maybe that is because a lot of the people there are normally tourists and they just aren't there.

myhobbyisouting · 12/11/2020 23:57

Did you go to the pub/restaurant/cinema/theatre/mums house/swimming/gym/shoe shop/bookshop?

Bellal · 12/11/2020 23:57

My experience is different. I live in the NW and whilst it's nothing like the original lockdown, it is noticeably quieter since lockdown started.

SufferingFromLongLockdown · 13/11/2020 09:19

Life feels far from normal. None of the regular activities that keep my mental ticking over are happening or have happened since march. It's the same with the children's stuff.

I choose to go places where it feels more normal. Eg the park or beach, where it feels more relaxed. We know that being outdoors is pretty safe and so if people meet in slightly more than twos, they're adding negligeable additional risk and I'm all for it.

Yes it feels more normal than the horror of march to July, but if I think of what we've lost I could get very down.

For each and every pub hug that occurs, I bet the participants have had hundreds less face to face interaction that they would have prior to March. (I'm counting the 4 gigs we've missed in this time, but think of football matches, theatre, busy pubs, shops and restaurants before physical distancing was brought in, my son's music lesson that is yet again online etc...)

Oh and just to remind us of how abnormal things are, many loos have been closed. Our town center has removed all seating and also bins... Yet more unnecessary covid madness.

JustBidenMyTime · 13/11/2020 09:51

It is a bizarre lockdown. It is barely on the news so people seem to forget it a lot of the time. My local FB has people asking who wants to join them for a run etc - despite the law being that only one person can meet one other person.
Plus people in my street arranging social events - outside of course, as if that makes it OK - same rule as mentioned above applies of course. I don't think they are intentionally breaking the rules, but the lockdown is barely being reported so many people have simply forgotten much of the time.

BIWI · 13/11/2020 09:54

I had to go out yesterday to do some shopping. There were loads of kids around as it was the end of the school day, but also masses of traffic. Just like a normal, non-lockdown day. I was really surprised, because the last lockdown it was deserted here. (SW London)

Cases are reasonably low here, and the number of cases has been falling - although the rate of fall is definitely slowing down. I wouldn't be at all surprised, based on this, to see them start to rise again soon Sad

Thismustbelove · 13/11/2020 09:58

No it doesn't feel like normal at all.
All shops are shut apart from essentials. Most people are wearing masks. All children's activities are shut. When people meet at the school run, they stand apart and don't say anything other than a quick hello. Three is no chit chat. Most people are not visiting other people's houses. Restaurants and bars are all closed. Supermarkets baked goods are all in plastic. Cafes are serving take away coffee with 2m marked for queuing. Beauticians and hairdressers are all closed. GPs are doing telephone consultations where possible.
We have been told that Christmas will be a low key affair. Retailers are trying to move it to January to try to salvage something. Its not easy but our numbers have decreased dramatically. We still have a way to go though.

KatherineJaneway · 13/11/2020 10:03

It's the same here, lots of people out and about, but that is to be expected. The first lockdown was much stricter and we knew far less about the virus. Some people are far less afraid than last time. I have been out and about - walking for exercise and shopping for food, and loads of people are out. But, as I am out myself, I won't criticise them for being out when I am too!

SuperbGorgonzola · 13/11/2020 10:05

North west and much quieter here. Much less traffic.

I was annoyed to see quite a few older couples in the supermarket; not frail but definitely over 65/70. No obvious reason why they needed to both be shopping.

We've also had extremely high indoor mask compliance here since it came in. I honestly can't remember the last time I saw someone in a shop without a mask.

Parker231 · 13/11/2020 10:09

How can it normal when we’re in lockdown? It’s essential travel, shopping and exercise only. The only positive in this lockdown is the keeping the schools open. You’re meant to be staying at home.

Clockstop · 13/11/2020 10:10

It's a good thing of it feels more normal. We have to live with this virus, we can't be peak anxiety for the next year!

JustBidenMyTime · 13/11/2020 10:12

I think how you view the lockdown this time depends on how much you have adapted to the 'new normal' (sorry for annoying phrase). I think many people are used to social distancing, masks, no face-to-face GP etc, and so it still doesn't feel any different in the second lockdown apart from the hairdressers being closed. Many people have avoided pubs, restaurants, cinemas, gyms etc since March anyway so won't be noticing that change. Many people have got all their shopping online since March so won't be noticing the non-essential shops closed (although this time most shops seem to have found a way to be essential).

And what about the 'non-essential' shops?
The cinema?
Or the pubs?
The restaurants?
The gyms?
The swimming pools?
The hair salons?
The nail bars?
The theatres?
The museums?

If life is so 'normal' then I assume they were all 'rammed' too?

Ginogineli · 13/11/2020 10:22

Liverpool totally normal here

No one I know works from home so by default are therefore rekaxed as they and kids put mixing all day

Went to a diff office in work yesterday - 15 people huddled in tiny room and some play fighting

No one cares under 50 generally

People still mixing

Garden bbqs popular round here

Parker231 · 13/11/2020 10:24

And people wonder why restrictions and lockdowns are been put in place! Whilst people make up their own rules, the longer there will be additional deaths and new lockdowns.

IcedPurple · 13/11/2020 10:27

Liverpool totally normal here

Really?

What are your plans for the weekend? A trip to the cinema followed by dinner out maybe? Then a few drinks down the local? Then get your hair done tomorrow, and a few hours in the gym on Sunday? Or other 'normal' stuff?

Ginogineli · 13/11/2020 10:31

By normal I mean attitudes really

And to be honest I know several human still operating - private low key ones where they share the key amongst a group of regulars, my hair and beauty friends still work on the side with trusted clients and all my mates still meeting for drinks etc just in homes

Ginogineli · 13/11/2020 10:31

Human = gyms

None of that is 'normal' though, is it?
Lipz · 13/11/2020 10:39

I'm not in the UK in in Ireland but tbh I was wondering how on earth the numbers are so high there, but from what you say of people acting normal and going things as normal it's no wonder. We've brought our numbers right down we're between just over 200 - 350, deaths are also very low, between 1-10. I know we have a smaller population but we were in the thousands before lock down which is very high for our small population.

We do follow the rules to be fair, yes there are the rule breakers like everywhere but our buses are at 25% capacity which is being followed, only essential shops are open and yes this time round we can take out from fast foods but pubs, restaurants, café etc all closed, the streets and roads are very quiet. Masks are mandatory here even in schools - the whole day in schools , they have been for a good while, so that is helping too.

From reading here it does seem that there are more things opened in the UK than needed, sure look we all even know that after our 6 week lock down and everything opens back up in December the numbers will rise, but by the time that happens christmas will be over, it does give us some hope though that by doing this 6 week lock down people can spend time with their family and friends and not be restricted to 4 or 6 or maybe no visitors.

Requinblanc · 13/11/2020 10:45

I am in East London and everyone is outside...parks rammed, streets busy, shops that are open full of people, roads as busy as they always are, quite a few people on public transports. Lockdown does not seem to mean staying indoors here...and many people very obviously not following social distancing rules.

Lockdown compliance has gone down it seems at least in this part of the country.

Firenight · 13/11/2020 10:51

Really not normal here.

Missing my hobbies, my social life and people I love.

IcedPurple · 13/11/2020 10:52

Lockdown does not seem to mean staying indoors here.

Clearly not, because otherwise how would you have been able to observe all the 'rammed parks' and 'shops full of people'?
