Can I be fined or reported if one household member has symptoms and the others don’t self-isolate?

Just that really. I can’t tell from the guidance if there are any official penalties for this or if there is a route to report.

There is a teacher and school age children in our household who are not showing symptoms.

Thanks. So if the individual with symptoms is never tested the rest of the household can do whatever they like with no penalties?

Morally the person with symptoms needs to get tested and everyone in the household should isolate until results are received

Ginfordinner · 11/11/2020 22:12

Why would the person with symptoms not want to be tested? Confused

MrGorksy · 11/11/2020 22:12

It shouldn't really matter whether you will get fined or not. If someone in the household is showing symptoms then the rest need to isolate until there is a negative test or they done their 14 days. It really is very simple.

itsgettingweird · 11/11/2020 22:14

Guess it depends on your moral conscience?

If you are happy to risk spreading it via people who could become symptomatic (knowing what we know about household transmission) then fines are irrelevant.

Ultimately the longer people spread it about the longer we risk lockdowns as number remain high.

FatGirlShrinking · 11/11/2020 22:16

I'd be really pissed off if your school age children infected my school age child because you and your family didn't want to follow the rules and get someone tested who's showing symptoms.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 11/11/2020 22:17

So they wont get tested so the rest of you can pretend all is well. And what happens if you cause a localised outbreak in the school, and people die? Would you feel good then?

Get them tested. It is very likely they could just have a cold, but get tested. You all need to start isolating now; you can only go out if a negative result comes back.

Pascal2908 · 11/11/2020 22:17

You don't need a 'rule' you just need some bloody common sense !

If you have Covid in your household then stay away from people ! (Some of whom might die) 50k dead today... do you really want to add to that ??

Lumene · 11/11/2020 22:18

Yes the decision is down to the individual members moral conscience with no penalties or reporting mechanism.

My view and actions have been to self-isolate, but not everyone is doing the same and not sure what I can do about it.

Peppafrig · 11/11/2020 22:18

Why on earth wouldn’t they get tested ? Are they just happy to let the children and the teacher go in and spread it to vulnerable kids at school. Wow this is horrible . Shame on them .

Lumene · 11/11/2020 22:19

If you have Covid in your household then stay away from people

There is one symptom in the household which may or may not be COVID.

I am staying away from people personally but not everyone is. What can I do?

OP posts:
Lumene · 11/11/2020 22:19

I agree with you Peppa.

Itisasecret · 11/11/2020 22:20

This is happening. Parents not testing children because they don’t want to SI. Then Covid is spreading.

Africa2go · 11/11/2020 22:20

is this your family OP? If not, are you speculating about another family? How do you know there is a family member with symptoms?

Lumene · 11/11/2020 22:21

I'd be really pissed off if your school age children infected my school age child because you and your family didn't want to follow the rules and get someone tested who's showing symptoms.

Me too! But with no fine and no reporting what else is there to do?

OP posts:
HotPenguin · 11/11/2020 22:22

This happened to someone I know, the person who should have been isolating was found out and it caused a lot of upset for vulnerable people at their place of work. They got a formal warning I believe.

islockdownoveryet · 11/11/2020 22:23

So the person with symptoms have they had a test ?

The whole household should isolate until the test comes back if it's negative then you can go out .
Is it really a big deal on the grand scheme of things .
Who is this person to you that's refusing to isolate and is it the one with symptoms ?

Peppafrig · 11/11/2020 22:26

It breaks my heart to read things like this. A teacher of all people should want to protect the children and their colleagues. Parents with children of comprised immune systems are being told schools are a covid secure environment.

Monstermissy36 · 11/11/2020 22:27

My kids are currently off school as I'm waiting on a test result.. it's the right thing to do. I don't want them to miss the time in school but I also dot want to be responsible for someone dying.

FatGirlShrinking · 11/11/2020 22:38

@Lumene

I'd be really pissed off if your school age children infected my school age child because you and your family didn't want to follow the rules and get someone tested who's showing symptoms.

Me too! But with no fine and no reporting what else is there to do?

Do you have to be under threat of fine to behave properly?
Chloemol · 11/11/2020 22:44

If the person is within your household, and that includes you, the teacher and the children until the person is tested you have to isolate

If they are refusing then to be honest I would be reporting them to their work, and certainly be reporting to the schools for the teacher and children

It’s no wonder we are where we are now

LadyWithLapdog · 11/11/2020 22:44

www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-and-treatment/when-to-self-isolate-and-what-to-do/ If you check “When to self isolate” bullet point 3 says if you live with someone with symptoms or who has tested positive.

This bit of the advice is straightforward.

meow1989 · 11/11/2020 22:45

I thought if a member of the household has symptoms then everyone else in the household has to isolate until the test comes back negative or 14 days is up?

LadyWithLapdog · 11/11/2020 22:48

@meow1989 exactly. Lots of the Covid info has been confusing but this is as straightforward as it gets.
