Is this lockdown actually doing anything?

Or are we ruining more businesses because it’s not exactly a lockdown with schools open as normal.

Cases in our town have been increasing everyday and show no sign of slowing down. Is it likely that we will see a slowdown next week or will these 4 weeks be pointless? If we get to the end of the 4 weeks and we have made no progress what then? Will they finally concede that schools are a major driver and close them?

People who are testing positive now will have caught it before lockdown.

Torvean32 · 11/11/2020 16:07

You won't normally see a change till week 3.

Qasd · 11/11/2020 16:14

It far too early to see the impact of this lockdown. Ireland however have managed to bring down cases and keep schools open so it may be possible but we will know in about three weeks,

x2boys · 11/11/2020 16:24

The cases seem to have leveled off a bit ,I know they are a bit up and down though ,the deaths are going up ,those people sadly will have caught the virus a few weeks ago .

Racinglikeapronow · 11/11/2020 16:24

Ireland have kept schools open and cases are now around 250 a day instead of around 1,000 prior to lockdown. It does work but only if people stick to it. I think no visitors in house is the key one and also no retail shops open so less people congregating.

MarshaBradyo · 11/11/2020 16:25

Too early.

We’re slowing down but probably not due to this lockdown

Redbrickwall · 11/11/2020 16:33

Also please don’t forget that not all the deaths are OF Covid, but with it. It really does distort the figures

HumanFemale1 · 11/11/2020 16:39

Short answer, no.

CoffeeandCroissant · 11/11/2020 16:40

@Redbrickwall

The ONS publish the figures weekly. For example, for the most recent week: Of the 1,379 deaths that involved COVID-19, 1,196 had this recorded as the underlying cause of death (86.7%) www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/bulletins/deathsregisteredweeklyinenglandandwalesprovisional/latest
Toddlerteaplease · 11/11/2020 16:44

I know of two people who have died if completely unrelated issues. But are classed as a Covid deaths as they were positive. It would be interesting to see he figures of people who have actually died as a direct result of Covid.

HopeAndDriftWood · 11/11/2020 16:46

@Toddlerteaplease The ONS do publish that, last weeks is in the comment above yours. I’m sorry about your friends.

Racinglikeapronow · 11/11/2020 16:49

If I was ever to snap and murder a whole bunch of people it would be as a result of those saying deaths can be with covid not of covid. Angry Angry

Plenty of people with underlying conditions would have lived long happy lives if it wasn’t for covid plus their condition.

SpookyNoise · 11/11/2020 16:50

No, I don’t think it is doing anything. Any decrease in figures will be down to half term and schools being closed.

OnlyBejoking · 11/11/2020 16:52

Cases in Liverpool have dropped a lot since tier 3/lockdown so something is working. I think lots of other places will see the effect in a few weeks.

Whatwouldscullydo · 11/11/2020 16:55

Nope. Seems everything is open besides pubs and salons and bookies and charity shops.

The big chains will survive but frankly having screwed the hospitality trade over with curfews, we are now just gonna screw the last remaining independent businesses.

Seems a big waste if everyone's time tbh and I worry for those who will no doubt lose their jobs/businesses now.

Not sure what this month will do that 4 months didnt do befire . Theres no way its gonna just be a month either. 14 day incubation period starting from the day lockdiwb started wont eveb have gone through rhe house at the end of the month. And given MN is so anti stocking up, one of themselves gonna have to go shopping...

whatswithtodaytoday · 11/11/2020 17:03

It's far too early to tell - people who were infected last week before lockdown will only just be symptomatic and getting positive tests. The reduction in deaths will take a lot longer to see - probably not until lockdown ends.

User158340 · 11/11/2020 17:11

Cases in Liverpool were falling before tier 3. They just had a very sharp, exponential rise in September when term started which battered them in September and October and now they're dealing with the aftermath with hospital admissions.

The half term will have more of an effect than this half arsed bollocks.

Redbrickwall · 11/11/2020 17:13

@Racinglikeapronow
Why would you feel that angry?! It is well known that if you test positive that Covid would go down on your death certificate and it would then be added to the daily numbers. I’m not minimising Covid deaths just stating a fact!!!

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 11/11/2020 17:14

There was some research which found that transmission of the virus was highest in gyms and restaurants.

BunsyGirl · 11/11/2020 17:24

@Racinglikeapronow My mum died just over eight years ago. She had severe COPD and we knew that catching a common cold could kill her. She then developed lung cancer. Whilst in hospital for that, she picked up a bacterial infection. What killed her in the end? We don’t know and it doesn’t really matter. We knew that she was going to die. Her lungs were fucked. There will be a lot of people dying of Covid in the same position as she was.

frozendaisy · 11/11/2020 17:25

Areas will come out into tiers I would imagine dependent on local transmission and stress on NHS services.

Seems like the philosophy is to keep businesses closed rather than close schools.

Racinglikeapronow · 11/11/2020 17:26

@Redbrickwall my best friend has a degree from a top university, is a gold medal winner for the highest result in the entire faculty in her masters program, has travelled extensively and has a serious boyfriend. She works in a pharmaceutical company on the regulatory side of the company ensuring medications meet correct standards. She lives in a house share with 4 other girls, goes on nights out and has a large and loving family of which she is an integral member. She also has 25% lung capacity across both lungs from a childhood illness. If she gets covid she will die.

But to people like you that’s just fine and doesn’t counts BeCaUsE sHe hAs An uNdeRlYinG cOnDiTiOn

and would die because of that plus covid not of covid.

It makes my blood boil. Angry

Racinglikeapronow · 11/11/2020 17:26

My friend is 27 by the way.

Redbrickwall · 11/11/2020 18:02

@Racinglikeapronow you’ve made some wild assumption about ‘people like me’. I actually was on the shielded list. And like your friend who you seem to speak for, there are many infectious viruses that would finish me off, not just Covid. It doesn’t mean I choose to stop living. Infact, I choose to live life even more because of it.

I am not a Covid denier, a conspiracy theorist, anti vaxxer or any sort of monster you portray me as for stating that there are genuinely people who have tested positive and have no symptoms, but are still labelled as a Covid-19 death .

You really do need to wind your neck in

Redbrickwall · 11/11/2020 18:05

Ps @Redbrickwall if any of my friend spoke for me like you do, I’d be mortified. I have long accept that my lifespan won’t be as long as the normal person and that something will get me. Stop trying to virtue signal in the name of your friend
