Is this lockdown actually doing anything?

Or are we ruining more businesses because it’s not exactly a lockdown with schools open as normal.

Cases in our town have been increasing everyday and show no sign of slowing down. Is it likely that we will see a slowdown next week or will these 4 weeks be pointless? If we get to the end of the 4 weeks and we have made no progress what then? Will they finally concede that schools are a major driver and close them?

Idk it looked like Scotland had a handle on their numbers after their tier approach . Basically my area has been in tier 3 since September and today the country recorded their highest death number since May. That’s after weeks of extra restrictions.

Madhairday · 11/11/2020 18:39

I think the really frustrating thing about those who always say 'but with covid not of covid' is that's been over and again proven that the vast majority of deaths recorded have Covid as the main cause, as in the link above to ONS. Yes, there are a small percentage that were only 'with' but these posters make it out like the figures are completely skewed and manipulated when they are there plainly to see, and it's then obvious that most are indeed 'of' covid. That doesn't mean they don't have underlying conditions, just that covid is what actually killed them. People like to think they were going to die anyway but many would have years left. I'm CEV but only 48 and not planning to shuffle off just yet, thank you, but no doubt if I died because I caught covid I'd simply be another of those deaths with underlying conditions, another death that doesn't actually matter according to that narrative.

In South Yorkshire cases are going down, but this won't be due to lockdown, more to do with tier 3 and half term.

Racinglikeapronow · 11/11/2020 20:18

Grow up @Redbrickwall my friend has a completely normal life expectancy and manages her condition amazingly on asthma medication. If there were no covid her life would not be at risk and we have discussed many time idiots like you who think that when covid is the factor tipping their illness into severe and likely death means they weren’t someone who died due to covid.

Feel free to be flippant about your own life (amazing you have so little regard for your health) but just because you don’t care about yourself you don’t have the right to extend your cavalier attitude to those like my friend who were living perfectly normal lives before covid came along and people like you decided their lives were irrelevant.

Racinglikeapronow · 11/11/2020 20:21

I agree @Madhairday and your situation is far more common than the ‘sure they would’ve died anyway’ brigade

Cases in my area were around 430/100000 prior to being put into tier 3 then subsequently lockdown, we are now down to 250/100000 so still high but definitely a significant improvement, there's been a 25% drop in positive cases in this week alone. We are nowhere near out the woods but certainly on the right path.

bringmelaughter · 11/11/2020 21:28

Why are people struggling so much with the concept of a lag between an action and it’s effect. Surely we’ve been doing this for longer enough to know that you won’t see the effects of a lockdown a week after it starts.

CKBJ · 11/11/2020 21:46

It doesn’t even seem like lockdown. Lots of traffic on the roads, supermarkets busy, parks filled with children and teens, people out and about on “essential” xmas shopping at places such as the Range. If this lockdown actually brings cases down the lockdown in March was obviously far too heavy and lasted far too long.

KitKatastrophe · 11/11/2020 21:51

If she gets covid she will die.
Even with the most severe underlying condition and advanced age, the majority survive.

KitKatastrophe · 11/11/2020 21:54

If there were no covid her life would not be at risk
Surely she would be at high risk from flu and any other respiratory or chest infection? Not to mention the fact that all our lives are at risk constantly from any number of things which have the ability to kill.

MercyBooth · 11/11/2020 22:04

@CKBJ I did my Christmas shopping at Boots today. I usually dont do it till the beginning of December but the town centre will be rammed then because of this lockdown.

More people will be together in the same space post lockdown.

grassisjeweled · 11/11/2020 22:05

It's all starting to seem a bit futile, yes

DianaT1969 · 11/11/2020 22:22

A poster above said that a report stated most transmission was found to be in gyms and restaurants. I clicked on that news story and am sure it was in America. Most schools are online there. So restaurants and gyms would be two of the top indoor places where people congregate (apart from Donald Trump parties).

Itmaybeus · 11/11/2020 22:34

My dc are isolating as their bubble has burst - frustratingly due to children mixing inside during half term against the rules in our area. The children have then spread it because the symptoms they are starting with are not usual isolation symptoms. School have now said if children have a sore throat, headache or tummy ache however mild they need to isolate till they get a negative swab. If we'd have been in full lock down this wouldn't have happened. I'm all for education and being in school however I'm now thinking has a half hearted lock down hurt our economy more and not reduce the spread? Only time will tell.

IdblowJonSnow · 12/11/2020 00:04

Yes of course lockdown will make a difference, why on earth wouldn't it? Hmm
Anyway, we'll all know soon enough in a few weeks.

This! Why do people keep saying this over and over?
