Lockdown should be Extended past Dec 2nd until all over 80s are vaccinated

So the first vaccinations will be available at the start of December. If we extend our lockdown until the end of January we could get most of our elderly population vaccinated. This would save so many lives and avoid a Xmas surge.

This is certainly achievable if the other vaccine candidates are effective.

Once we have vaccinated our over 80s we are unlikely to return to the high levels of deaths since 60% of the deaths so far are in those over 80.

This would save so many lives and enable us to reopen faster.

We should all sacrifice Xmas now there is an end goal in sight and Thousands of lives Can be saved.

No people have weddings planned for December, don’t young lives matter too?

PhilCornwall1 · 10/11/2020 18:05

Out interest, those of you who are saying they're not complying or know people who are not, what exactly are you doing? It's not like you can go anywhere with everything shut.

That's just the point a lot of non-essential shops aren't. We are off out on Sunday to get new flooring for the bathroom, shop is open, but hardly essential is it. Half arsed lockdown if you ask me.

southeastdweller · 10/11/2020 20:47

No it fucking well shouldn't. It is destroying more lives than Covid. Fuck Christmas.

Umm no I don't think so. 2nd of December is when lockdown will and should end.

My sons mate at uni posted a video of their house party with over 30 in one flat and barely an inch to move!

These are the idiots putting university cities into tier 3.

No thanks

Checkyourvoicemail · 11/11/2020 04:57

Don't agree with you at all op. The vulnerable & elderly should protect themselves (and be offered extensive help to protect themselves) and the rest of us should be allowed to get on with life.

Yep, exactly what should happen. I'm meant to be shielding again, but no way, not this time thanks. If needed I am going out and will be at the weekend. Life cannot be shutdown for months on end like this.

This is an oddly phrased statement. While you "get on with life", are the elderly and ECV supposed to just sit about and stagnate? Or perhaps, "get on with death"?

Clearing out my parents home ready to hand back to the HA in 3 weeks time. Plenty of mixing of households and and all in the same place. Impossible to do otherwise.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 11/11/2020 05:56

Whilst I am not in favour of this lockdown and certainly don't want it extended I do still think it is impossible to shield the vulnerable or for the vulnerable to shield.
Dh is ecv and wfh. He rarely leaves the house but still has to attend medical appointments. Our 3 dds still have to attend school.
Well actually at the minute one does as the other two are self isolating after being close contacts.
Over 80s can shield a little easier but they still have medical appointments to attend.
There is no easy solution.

Pixxie7 · 11/11/2020 06:08

I personally wouldn’t mind cancelling Christmas but I think most people particularly children need Christmas this year. The lockdown isn’t about protecting the elderly but slowing down the spread.
I also don’t think cancelling Christmas will work anyway people are fed up and need something to look forward to.
Also the vaccine is not likely to be ready at the beginning of December anyway.

@bathsh3ba
I agree with this. The cynic in me thinks this is exactly what’s going on and the timing of the vaccine news is deliberate and has been done so that the government can use it to get people to comply when they extend this lockdown- “it’s only a few more weeks, the vaccine will be given to people soon, then it’ll all be over and life can get back to normal”.

I really hope I am wrong about them planning to extend the lockdown beyond 2 December and I certainly don’t support the idea.

I'm fully expecting them to do it.

They won't extend it because there'll be a revolt on the Tory benches. It'll be back to the tier system.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 11/11/2020 07:13

Op I understand the sentiment but with people losing jobs like theres no tomorrow this country is going to run put of money , who is going to pay the nhs and the pensions then ?

GeorgiaMcGraw · 11/11/2020 07:24

We should shield the vulnerable. Lockdown may save lives frpm covid death but it also takes lives through prevebting/delaying treatments for other disease, DV, child abuse increase, suicide etc. We're seeing a widening attainment gap between rich and poor kids when they can't go to school as usual. Businesses closing, people losing their livelihoods. Awful.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 11/11/2020 08:07

An even more overrun NHS would be pretty awful too. Shielding the very vulnerable won't even help the NHS much as they won't be taking up an ICU bed. It will be palliative only.
Plus you can't shield the vulnerable especially when they have kids who must go to school unless self isolating. 2 out 3 of mine today with ecv dh.
It is not black and white. I really don't know what the solution is.

Ilovemyhairbeingstroked · 11/11/2020 08:16

I think it should be healthworkers , extremely vulnerable and then the age group 65-80 . This age group are the retired, that like to go out and about and also provide childcare to grandchildren.
