My hairdresser is "opening" as wfh?!?

I have received a message from my hairdresser to let me know that due to the lockdown the salon will be opening as though working from home (so, one hairdresser and one client only in the salon). Is this allowed? I am not sure what the point of the economic chaos caused by the lockdown is if everyone is finding their own way to "work around" it.

If you are in wales Or NI, no. If you are in England , very sly but yes it’s allowed but not in spirit of the rules.

Olmec8 · 09/11/2020 23:34

I'd be amazed if they let her carry on with that, assuming she's in England.

Comefromaway · 09/11/2020 23:53

It’s definitely not allowed.

I know it's very controversial but we have done the same with our gym (which was only ever a 121 training studio anyway).

We have had to make a decision between following the lockdown rules and being able to pay our mortgage and eat this month.

That's how stark the choice is.

Perhaps the hairdresser is in the same position?

Many of us slipped through the net of any kind of useful amount of financial assistance and now have these stark choices to make unfortunately.

At the beginning I would have said we were one of the least likely people to bend any rules - we are generally pro-lockdown and have stuck to everything else.

Comefromaway · 09/11/2020 23:57

The legislation states that hairdressers are not allowed to open. It also states that someone must not be indoors with someone or outdoors in who is not a member of their household except for specific exceptions (of which having a haircut is not one of them).

CoffeeCreamandSugar · 09/11/2020 23:59

She may find she’s on dodgy ground with her insurance if anything goes wrong though

Thrownaway · 10/11/2020 00:01

Can understand its a hard choice if she has the option to make money, but is very against the rules.

It would involve multiple people entering her home etc, and would make me think that none of these people are following any other covid guidance so are likely to be risky. If she will break the rules for one person, then she will be doing it for others

Badoukas · 10/11/2020 00:19

If she started doing mobile hairdressing and visiting multiple homes, that would be ok though because she'd be classed as a tradesperson.

BananaPop2020 · 10/11/2020 00:22

@Badoukas it wouldn’t be ok, as it is a close contact, intimate service.

sleepwouldbenice · 10/11/2020 00:22

Mobile hairdressing isn’t allowed. It’s in the actual legislation
She’s breaking the law and in going there I think clients would be too

saraclara · 10/11/2020 00:30

Under the tough lockdown measures, all hairdressers will have to close. Rules of latest lockdown force all non-essential retail and beauty services to close, and the mixing of households, except for childcare and other forms of support, are banned. This means that alongside the closure of hair salons, mobile hairdressers will also have to stop work, until December 2nd, at least.

I can see why people would think this. In our case we are very, very careful.

Everything is fully disinfected and the whole area ventilated between clients and other than grocery shopping and walks we don't leave the house.

Thrownaway · 10/11/2020 01:44

@wheresmymojo can you say the same of clients coming to you though?

I would assume a hair dresser thats opened, and the clients breaking lockdown rules to go there are both unlikely to be following the rules elsewhere.

2020goawaynow · 10/11/2020 07:25

Close contact services are NOT allowed in any setting

BlueBrian · 10/11/2020 07:54

Hairdressing in quite clearly banned, in a saloon, mobile, or at home, no ifs, buts or maybes, it's illegal under the current legislation, the hairdresser could get a large fine, and any clients could also be liable to prosecution.

EggysMom · 10/11/2020 07:57

I would also imagine that their insurance wouldn't cover the activity, if anything goes wrong.

bigbluebus · 10/11/2020 08:04

Definitely not allowed. Those saying it's ok because she's WFH, on what basis do you come to that conclusion? WFH means you are in your own home with people who live in your household. Tradespeople who enter other people's homes as part of their work should be doing so under strict Covid Safe guidelines - ie not in same room as household members (in addition to masks, ventilation etc). Quite difficult to do someone's hair/beauty treatment from a different room I'd say.

elmfield4 · 10/11/2020 08:07

I'm a hairdresser with my own salon and you are definitely not allowed to trade under any circumstance whether it's mobile or in the salon. Her insurance would be void as well if anything did happen.

Splodgetastic · 10/11/2020 08:42

The gym near me is open, although seemingly only at night. I wondered whether they were just allowing family groups to visit and letting them in or something as it’s quite small, but I don’t think so.

Iwantacookie · 10/11/2020 08:47

Ide be looking for a new hairdresser if I was you. It's close contact so is not allowed. She could get into real trouble if anyone found out.
However I can completely understand why she has done this. I dont think it's right.

DepuisToujours · 10/11/2020 09:00

Is she doing it in her garden? Even then though, she wouldn't be able to cut hair and be far enough away... That said, I'm slow to judge anyone who might be in dire straits financially if they can't work. DH and I don't have to leave our house at all to work, but I think that's a big privilege / dumb luck.

I was just wondering yesterday whether 121 personal training sessions would be allowed outdoors in England, as you are allowed to meet one other person outdoors, as long as you socially distance. If anyone happens to know and doesn't mind answering. Hope that isn't too much of a hijack!

Hiddennameforever · 10/11/2020 09:24

I saw an fb advert from a local barber who works in local barber salon, that he will do cuts from home.
I think that’s wrong.
And he posted it publicly on FB.
Wrong!!!

rainbowunicorn · 10/11/2020 10:34

I would be reporting her.

chunkyrun · 10/11/2020 10:36

I would be reporting her.

^^ I'd mind my own business, could be the difference between her paying her mortgage and eating.
