Why has furlough been extended to the end of March?

Lockdown 2 supposedly finishing on December 2nd so why extend furlough for so long?

I find it a significant concern, though, that even with furlough it still costs employers money to keep employees. The cost of NI, pension contributions and paid holiday are not insignificant, especially when they’re being paid out in respect of hours not worked. The Job Retention bonus was the incentive here, because that money would go some way towards covering the costs, but without that I’m not at all sure the scheme will have the impact it is supposed to.

@Redolent

To tide us over the shit show that will be Brexit.
This.

Germany have furlough until Dec 2021?!

mrshonda · 07/11/2020 10:29

It's due to be reviewed in January - that's in the Government guidelines.

Snally82 · 07/11/2020 10:35

JSS was due to run until the end of March, it’s just replacing it really

Christmasiscoming77 · 07/11/2020 10:49

See, all this is why I get paranoid about the plans, why on earth would Germany’s be that long for example?

Againstmachine · 07/11/2020 10:52

If you keep chucking money at people there is likely to be unrest.

Christmasiscoming77 · 07/11/2020 10:54

@Againstmachine Likely or less likely?

Hayeahnobut · 07/11/2020 10:55

Because they want the economy to look like it's doing better than it is. That's all Sunak cares about. If they cared about people they'd ensure those on minimum wage were still receiving that minimum level of subsistence.

Yohoheaveho · 07/11/2020 10:57

To placate the population

Bushola · 07/11/2020 11:06

Because Vallance will keep inflating his infection and death figures for dramatic effect.

Christmasiscoming77 · 07/11/2020 11:08

@Bushola Yep, but why, what’s the end plan?

Bushola · 07/11/2020 11:13

Non Compulsory* vaccine?

  • Non compulsory but severe limits on what those who don’t have it can do.

Before people start shouting conspiracy theorists, that’s what people who called out Vallance and Whitty were called, but it would appear those so called conspiracy theorists were right.

Whattheactual2020 · 07/11/2020 11:17

@Bushola Why the need to have the vaccine? Why do we all need one??

Bushola · 07/11/2020 11:22

No idea but suspect it’ll probably used as various governments “way out”

No one will want to admit either they were wrong, or overreacted or reacted in an inappropriate way. This gives them an end.

Whattheactual2020 · 07/11/2020 11:24

So the vaccine will be safe? Then that will be the end of all this 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bushola · 07/11/2020 11:37

Wouldn’t surprise me if the vaccine put in most people is some placebo vaccine

Wintereconomyplan · 07/11/2020 11:42

Omg tinfoil hat required Hmm

Whattheactual2020 · 07/11/2020 11:51

Placebo? Why?

Yohoheaveho · 07/11/2020 11:56

I agree that the highest priority will be to save face / cover their asses, BUT I think there will be a lot of push back against a vaccination, so it might not be that easy
Whattheactual2020 · 07/11/2020 11:58

@Yohoheaveho So you mean, all the governments know now that the action they’ve taken is to drastic, but they have to continue with it to save face? But ruining the economy? It doesn’t make sense

Bushola · 07/11/2020 12:22

When have politicians ever wanted to admit they are wrong?
Clearly the best thing for the UK PM to do would be to come out today with another press conference and admit that the figures last week have now been shown to be false, misleading and over stated and correct the lockdown situation, but clearly he won’t do that.

Yohoheaveho · 07/11/2020 12:24

It does sound far-fetched when you put it like that, perhaps I should just say that they go to great lengths to always appear in the right?

Yohoheaveho · 07/11/2020 12:27

He clearly won't do that
Boris is too vain, superior, selfish and pigheaded to ever back down and admit he was wrong, he's unable to tolerate the discomfort that he would feel if he subordinated himself like that.
Therefore we must all the pay the price for his vanity and selfishness ☹️

Againstmachine · 07/11/2020 12:30

@Christmasiscoming77

I meant less likely.

Placate the population, getting paid for no work is win win for some people.
