Do you believe 2021 will be better?

I’m just asking this for reassurance tbh, not that anyone on here has a crystal ball.

I know that covid will not go away, there will still be cases of it and hospitalisation but do you think in 2021 we will be able to wave goodbye to social distancing, mask wearing and all the restrictions?

Surely there will have to be a day were Boris says the restrictions/lockdowns are over for good and aren’t coming back again.

I think by next summer things will be much better in terms of restrictions. Economic fallout will be shite though.

viccat · 03/11/2020 21:13

I don't know, I was just thinking earlier we're getting such mixed messages at the moment. Last week there was an article on the BBC website talking about things being different for the next five years... but then we're also hearing a vaccine roll out could start as early as December? I'm expecting we'll have restrictions in place at least until late spring 2021 and then perhaps some return to normal in the summer.

thecatsatonthewall · 03/11/2020 21:23

I do not believe they'll be a vaccine that is effective enough to make a real difference in 2021, so i think we will have to wait until there are more effective treatments.

JacobReesMogadishu · 03/11/2020 21:26

No, I think it’ll be worse.

LindaEllen · 03/11/2020 21:31

I think by the end of spring it will be normal-ish - but perhaps still masks and sanitiser in public places unless we've a vaccine with good take-up.

Whether cases are actually down and under control or not, I think covid-19 will gradually be dimmed down, and will eventually just be lumped in with other cold/flu type illnesses. I'm not sure how it works, but could the flu vaccine and covid be combined? Perhaps this would happen.

People seem to want covid gone, but that's never going to happen. It's not achievable. But the government will make us feel like it's gone, and by 2022 we'll be back to normal.

We can't afford not to be.

agradecida · 03/11/2020 21:33

I'm aiming to get through to the end of March, and expecting better from then on. I don't mean back to 'normal', but a happy existence, rather than just an existence!

  • it starts to get warmer and sunnier - even just a walk in the warm sun on my own would help right now
  • I believe that vaccination will start either Dec or Jan at the latest - even if it's only for a limited number and just results in milder symptoms, it still gives me hope
  • testing will keep improving - the '20 min' test looks very hopefull
  • I'll be able to meet friends for a picnic outside. I believe we'll be back to at least meeting 6 people outside by then, and much more pleasant on a warm day than in this weather.
  • if rates rise again in Sept/Oct, I think we'll be in a position to treat it in the same way as a normal flu season because we'll have another 11 months of developments of rapid and widespread testing, improvements in treatment and of vaccines.
kittensarecute · 03/11/2020 21:34

It has to be or I'll be suicidal. I need to live again not just endure this pointless existence where I can't even hug my best friend.

We've got Greece 2021 booked for June. Hopeful for travel corridors. Still expecting to wear a mask etc. If we've got a window for travelling joy we'll take it.

Applebloss0m · 03/11/2020 21:49

I think much the same. Our way of life for a good couple of years. Lock downs on and off as needed (maybe local). SD is here for the foreseeable

3littlewords · 03/11/2020 22:00

It can't get much worse can it??

BogRollBOGOF · 03/11/2020 22:15

I think that Easter to September, life will look more normal with much more rapid easing of restrictions as respiritory illnesses naturally decline and there will be a lot more outdoor events on. Capacities may be reduced still but that depends on advances in vaccines and other healthcare. Beyond that, I don't know. Fatigue is ratcheting up rapidly now the days are getting short and I can't see a public appetite for people to oblige through another autumn of existing in suspended animation.

I can't wait for the day that the revolting facerags end up in landfill and I can actually look at random people in the face again. It's extra isolating beyond being denied access to family and friends that you can't even see 2/3s of other human faces when out and about. Vile, vile dehumanising things.

Flaxmeadow · 03/11/2020 22:16

Yes it will be better. It might not seem like it, but we are in a different place now to how it was in March. Back then we didn't know as much about the virus. In a year we will know more again. The more knowledge we gain, the better we will cope. We will find surer ways of dealing with it. More data more testing. Better treatments. Tests becoming available that will be accurate, instant and cheap. So cheap that one day we will probably be able to buy them in poundland, 3 for a quid, think what that would mean. Better ways of understanding the economy and how it was working pre covid and now during covid. Ways to save the health services but also ensuring the economy stays viable too. Understanding quarantine, what is effective and what isn't. We will learn better ways of living with it, we already are, everyday. Scientists from across the world sharing data with each other all going on behind the scenes

We are still in a learning curve and it takes time but it is happening, even though we might not notice it

MayFayre · 03/11/2020 22:21

If there is a vaccine and/or mass instant testing - maybe.

If not, no. It will just be more of this. At least 2020 had three good months at the start.

CherryPavlova · 03/11/2020 22:26

I'm usually an optimist but I think we're likely to see much worse before it feels better. Covid19 is only part of it. Tragically I think Trump may be re-elected and that will have a worldwide impact. Brexit will hit hard but is being hidden in the pandemic. Mass movement of people, political instability and a significant recession will affect us all. A few will benefit hugely but many more will struggle. I hope I'm wrong, but perfect storm for creeping fascism.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 03/11/2020 22:27

No. Coronavirus isn’t going to suddenly vanish, people can catch it more than once so no herd immunity, the implications of a rushed out, under tested vaccine are potentially horrific. The financial aspect is going to take years to recover in any respect.

I can’t see further lockdowns helping as so many are ignoring it. Relying on the common sense of the public is an exercise in futility.

Sorry, if it helps, depression could be making me even more pessimistic than usual

Amytree · 03/11/2020 23:07

Surely it can’t be any worse

Qasd · 03/11/2020 23:12

Well i thought 2016 was as bad as a year could get so erm what do I know?!..I have learned never to think things cannot get worse after this year😂!

Goawaybird · 03/11/2020 23:12

Five years of this is my prediction.

DenimDrift · 03/11/2020 23:45

Yes I also think we are looking at 5 years

Torvean32 · 03/11/2020 23:49

Yes. I think improvements will be gradual, but they will happen.
2021 will be better than 2020.

MadameBlobby · 04/11/2020 00:30

Even the WHO have said they think it will be over in under 2 years so not sure where people are dreaming up 5 years from. 🙄 We won’t need to worry about “protecting the NHS” in 5 years, there won’t be one left as no money to pay for it!
