Uni students coming home for lockdown

As title says..... my ds is saying he wants to come home. His girlfriend came home yesterday, (different uni) and another friend came home today.
Out of his flat mates (Halls) only one out of 5 is going home.
I’m in two minds - id love him to come home, I miss him etc but I also feel he should stay until Christmas as government are advising.
He currently has two online lectures and two face to face. One if those is practical hands on.
He hadn’t had any advice yet from the university.

What are people’s thoughts? I’m not sure I’m Capable of seeing Things clearly right now!

I would tell him to stay put TBH. I totally get how you would like to have him home but he's better off not.

If he's getting face to face lectures and 'hands on' ones he's quite lucky so should stay for those if nothing else. What would he do at home?

Ecosse · 02/11/2020 19:30

If he wants to come home, he comes home. I could not imagine telling my D.C. they can’t come back to their own home because of the ‘rules’.

It is cruel.

Sparklingbrook · 02/11/2020 19:32

It's not cruel. He has studying and lectures to do. It's what he went to Uni for after all.
If all lectures were cancelled and everyone had gone home leaving him rattling about in Halls on his own that would be different.

Roselilly36 · 02/11/2020 19:34

Most parents I know with kids at Uni, are already home, most lectures are online. Halls are pretty empty. How would you both feel if your son couldn’t return at Christmas, so many u turns by government, I am not sure what to believe anymore. Do what you feel is best, but if I was in your position I would let him come home ASAP.

He's lucky to get face to face contact. Why would he give that up, given the £9000 he's paying?

My dc is at Uni but all lectures and tutorials are online. She's staying until Christmas because at least he's living with friends there. He'd be bored at home as he can't meet anyone during lockdown

NameChange84 · 02/11/2020 19:35

I teach at a university. This is actually against government guidelines and against my universities rules. Students are supposed to stay at their term time address for this lockdown.

The more students return to their parents’
homes all over the UK, the more cases will increase. Siblings will take Covid into schools. Parents into workplaces such as hospitals and care homes. They should really stay put. My university is telling students this very clearly. Unless it’s due to genuine illness or self isolation the usual absence policy will be applied. Going home is against rules and missing face to face teaching for these reasons will not be overlooked.

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 02/11/2020 19:35

He needs to stay for the face to face sessions.

Tickledtrout · 02/11/2020 19:35

If it's the same as at my DD's university, they're still working out their response to Saturday's announcement. The government has now asked universities to put as much online as possible.
Mine too will come home if her flat starts to empty.

MrsPernicious · 02/11/2020 19:36

Guidance says:
If you live at university, you must not move back and forward between your permanent home and student home during term time. You should only return home at the end of term for Christmas. We will publish further guidance on the end of term.

Tickledtrout · 02/11/2020 19:38

@NameChange84 the government and the universities have indeed made "the rules". Pity they didn't bother to consult with those expected to suffer the greatest consequences.

Sparklingbrook · 02/11/2020 19:39

Yes, it's the moving back and forth between homes that causes the problems. I agree as well that when paying £9000 and you are getting face to face lectures you need to go to them.

Dustysilkflowers · 02/11/2020 19:40

They are not in jail.

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 02/11/2020 19:41

I work with someone who's DC came back from university when it all started kicking off in early October. Child brought C-19 home with them. Colleague has been off sick for nearly three weeks. I get it's tough for them stuck at uni in these circumstances, but they really need to stay put for now if at all possible.

kursaalflyer · 02/11/2020 19:43

Apart from anything else don't they get warnings about missing lectures or marks taken off?

Tickledtrout · 02/11/2020 19:46

@MillicentMargaretAmanda but until when? With schools open is it really going to be any better in a month's time? They won't be staying in halls over Christmas. There is no strategy, no plan. Everyone is having to make their own decision because to do otherwise is to put faith in a completely untrustworthy government.

Tickledtrout · 02/11/2020 19:47

@kursaalflyer it's almost all online. They just join a zoom

Snozzlemaid · 02/11/2020 19:48

Lectures are online so can still be attended from home.
Sparklingbrook · 02/11/2020 19:49

The practical hands on lectures and the face to face ones can't be attended from home.

lunar1 · 02/11/2020 19:50

He's an adult so it's up to him, but I would make it very clear that if he is home then he needs to follow the rules properly. So he wouldn't be having the girlfriend round and off visiting friends etc.

NameChange84 · 02/11/2020 19:52

We are still doing “Blended Learning” - a mix of online and face to face every single week. It’s untrue that all universities are doing solely online.

Tickledtrout · 02/11/2020 19:52

Mine is doing a lab based subject at a RG university. No lab time. A couple of videos of lab work. Pre recorded lectures. Zoom tutorial. When the gym shuts and the pubs shut, they'll be in their rooms 24/7.

Kazzyhoward · 02/11/2020 19:54

My son has only had two face to face tutorials (both given by phd students) and there's only one more planned before Christmas. All lectures are online. His lecturers aren't even on the campus site, they're all at home. There is no point at all of him being on campus. He'll be coming home before Thursday, as are most of his flatmates who are in the same position. Only one of his 7 flatmates has any real F2F teaching and she's a medical student. Unless there's any real change in the lack of F2F teaching, they won't be going back in January and will be refusing to pay their rent for next term.

Kazzyhoward · 02/11/2020 19:55

@Sparklingbrook

There aren't any at many Unis. It's all online.
Noideawottodo · 02/11/2020 19:58

Dds been home for 10 days and can't wait to go back - particularly as shes at uni in Wales where they are about to lift lockdown!

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 02/11/2020 19:58

Bit short sighted to refuse to pay next terms rent as they won’t then have any accommodation for the summer term when they are more likely to have exams, face to face tutorials and social opportunities
