Why doesn’t China have a second wave?

China had the initial wave of infections early 2020 then hardly any cases since. Their population is much bigger than UK. How can they have it so under control. Seems suspicious to me.

My friends and family are in China. Life is back to normal. People are back to work and school. My parents are enjoying their holidays at home. I'm so jealous. There has been some recent cases of infected Chinese travelling from overseas back to China. Every single case is treated in hospital. That results the shutdown of whole airline for two weeks. No one thinks they are the exception. Everyone believes that himself/herself is responsible for the wellbeing of other people.
@annabel85 also humans are social creatures and we tend to copy what our peer group does. If everyone around you is following regulations, you would too. the problem with the UK is that too many people refuse to wear masks and have illicit gatherings so that somehow normalizes risky behavior.
Yes, but as per my previous post the key is enforcement and respect and/or fear of those employed to upheld the rule of law.

People copy people breaking the rules because they see them getting away with it. In other countries and cultures they wouldn't get away with it, therefore they wouldn't dare. You see hundreds of people at raves and then attack the police when they turn up to stop it. It's normalised. Marches over the summer which the police allowed and then the police get attacked when they try to enforce the rules with distancing or whatever and then everyone sees the police running away. They're seen as a joke.

That's not to say we should be some authoritarian state. There's a balancing act, some countries are too far that way and we're too far the other way. We're becoming a nation of anarchists.

Seems to me that if we accepted having a government authoritarian enough to actually control this virus, we wouldn't need one so authoritarian that it forbade us spending time with family and friends. I won

Ignore the last "I won" - start of another thought that wasnt that pertinent anyway.

Apparently they are not travelling overseas much. I saw a news article about how internal domestic tourism has boomed in China because they are all holidaying in China.
The European second wave apparently stems from a variant of coronavirus that emerged from Spain in early summer and spread all over Europe from all the foreign travel that was taking place.

The Chinese are not travelling overseas at the moment as so many borers are closed eg Australia and Thailand. Additionally they would need to complete 2 weeks quarantine/self isolation upon their return to China. The national holiday at the beginning of October saw increase in domestic travel which was also great for their economy.
News is saw today said that China has now suspended entry from non Chinese nationals in the uk even if they hold Chinese visas and residence permits.

Sometimes I feel that the debates about the pandemic is getting too political. China aside, there are actually other countries which have also managed to get this under control, let it be Singapore, Australia, New Zealand etc. And they all share three things in common 1) take drastic action very quickly before it spread out of control; 2) effective mass testing, quarantine measures and contact tracing and 3) general good compliance from the people (i.e. people do take this seriously).

So at the end of the day it all boils down to competence and compliance which are regrettably lacking here at least from my own observations.

For those interested, I find this article thought-provoking:
