France did it till end of 2021 Germany has till 2022.

With COVID not being eliminated any time soon more deaths and lockdowns will happen in 2021 and perhaps beyond. Therefore, a furlough scheme becomes necessary as many businesses will be affected.

And how will they pay for it?

It would be nice but I'm not sure it would make much difference. My husband was furloughed for a period, but in the end the business had to close, so he was made redundant. The problem is that covering staff wages is only part of the battle - a business has all its other costs to pay - and if there's zero revenue coming it, it will reach a point where it's no longer viable to remain open.

If they want people to stay at home they need furlough.

Government Debt is already BIGGER than GDP this year, much higher than Germany's.

I think a universal benefit is more likely. It will be much less than furlough payments though.
People are going to be hard up. Govt will find a way to push that cost elsewhere - like banning evictions.

As a country we simply cannot afford it, unfortunately. Have a look at Government borrowing, and that's with current low interest rates. If they rise, we'll be in even more trouble.

If the government are paying people 80% of their wages to keep the jobs open then these furloughed people need to help with the covid effort !

Another year would be silly currently. And I'm one who may retain their job if furlough is extended (hospitality business) and lose it if it finishes.

I think looking at it for more than a month ahead makes sense, as it enables businesses to plan, but not too far ahead. I'd have liked to see it to start of January, and I think it will be needed until April time at least, but I'm hoping it won't be needed for the majority beyond that.

I'd rather my child have to pay more taxes in the future so that children today aren't going hungry because of all the parents losing their jobs.

In 2008 we spent 136 billion bailing out the banks - furlough has cost around 40 billion. If we could afford it then we can afford it now. Rather than complaining about the cost of furlough people should be looking at the money wasted & syphoned off by this crooked government

There was a clear plan for the banks to repay that, though - which many of them now have. There's no such plan in place for furlough.

Look up hyperinflation in Weimar Germany and see how well that works.

I think they call it quantitative easing these days.

I think furlough (or enhanced SSP/ESA) should be made available to the ECV, as the Government is advising them not to go to work (if they cannot WFH) even when their workplace is open. I don't see how it can go beyond that.

If we don’t have furlough what is the other option for people who can’t go to work because their workplace is closed? Mass unemployment? Millions on universal credit won’t be any cheaper than furlough, but it will stop business like pubs being able to reopen quickly when measures are lifted, meaning the gov pays out for a longer period.

We're coming towards the end of the self employment help too.

My partner works as a contractor so we are stuffed. No point retraining as the work will be there after covid. UC isn't a lot when your budget is based on a larger salary.

Yes, sadly it is mass unemployment. And rising debts.

That's the problem with lockdowns and why many are against them.

And if schools also closed, the problems would be EVEN bigger unfortunately.

Exactly - I run a tennis club & dp runs a pub, I don’t think you’d want either of us as your nurse if you ended up in hospital!
