Covid

Do you think the Furlough Scheme needs to be extended for another year

At least?

France did it till end of 2021 Germany has till 2022.

With COVID not being eliminated any time soon more deaths and lockdowns will happen in 2021 and perhaps beyond. Therefore, a furlough scheme becomes necessary as many businesses will be affected.

Do you think unemployment will reach double figures before 2021?

If the government are paying people 80% of their wages to keep the jobs open then these furloughed people need to help with the covid effort !
Doing what exactly? Fast tracked into respiratory nursing?

Well no of course not. There are plenty of other covid related that would require minimal training, helping with testing, couriering, nhs admin.

I'd rather they spent the money on supporting those who've been excluded from support so far, such as the 2.9 million self employed who've been excluded due to arbitrary and badly designed eligibility rules.

@Babyroobs oh give over. These people didn't ask for this. The best thing furloughed people can do is stay home to help reduce the spread.

I highly doubt they have all been staying home, some maybe but I’d imagine a small percentage. People will naturally have made the most of the paid time off.

I don’t think it should continue for another year, it’s too much money. Far better to invest in things where jobs remain and can do so through out the people of the virus.

No.
Other people have fallen through the cracks. They need help. For example, freelancers who has been freelance for a year. Limited companies which set up 1-2 years ago.

It already scares me to death that our children will be paying for this for a generation at least.

Also, while I have tremendous sympathy for people who lose jobs because of this, I dont really see how their situation is any different to all the other people who have lost jobs over the last decades and had to survive on benefits.

It's more likely furloughed will be extended another year. .I can't see any better situation when we get the end of April.
As long as all these lockdown restriction still apply, furlough just need to be extended..

It’s not a case of just losing jobs though is it. You are talking about thousands of viable businesses that if the restrictions were lifted would be back up and running. My husband works in live events and has been furloughed since the beginning. That’s a whole huge sector of people that otherwise need to all find new jobs. Where are all these jobs when everything is shut down?
