Why are people panic buying?

I'm genuinely confused. People were queuing at some local supermarkets from yesterday afternoon, even before announcement. All delivery slots got booked up in my local area after the announcement. Supermarkets are still open. We can still drive to Sainsburys or Tesco or wherever and do a big shop like before, or walk/bus to local shop for those who don't drive.

My understanding is that in England stores will not cordon off non essentials anyway like in Wales. I plan to do one big shop a week as always at my local supermarket, wearing a mask and social distancing like I have been doing for the last few months. This is still allowed isn't it?

So why are people panic buying?

The delivery slot were already hard to find but there was lots of click and collect available yesterday. I need to physically go to the shops tomorrow as they ran out of ds3 nappy size and decided to substitute it with a smaller size which I didn’t take. There was no visible line going into Asda but I didn’t want to take all dc into the store. So I’m waiting till tomorrow where the older two would be in school and dh home.

@Ginfordinner I am more nervous about a taxi as I feel like we have more control with a rental car (can wipe everything down before we get in etc.) I feel like taxis might be more risky.

Fortunately we have car club cars near me, so can rent by the hour and it’s a similar cost to a taxi anyway.

Aldi was fine today, if anything there seemed to be way more loo roll than normal (perhaps they're preparing for panic buying unnecessarily).

Dd went to waitrose, said it was packed and half the shelves were empty. She said she felt really angry seeing a tiny, very old, worried looking woman peering at the empty pasta shelf.

There will still be food on Thursday!

I just got back from Waitrose and so much was sold out. I am feeling really stressed now 😢

I really hope everything calms down a bit soon and more deliveries are available.

Because they are idiots. X

My sister went to Costco and some idiot had 2 240 rolls of toilet rolls and 24 4 pinta milks. 🙈🙈

Shopping for a school?

Peppafrig · 03/11/2020 01:29

That’s kind of the point of Costco it is a wholesaler. Maybe she should have minded her own business instead of counting everything someone else had .
