Why are people panic buying?

I'm genuinely confused. People were queuing at some local supermarkets from yesterday afternoon, even before announcement. All delivery slots got booked up in my local area after the announcement. Supermarkets are still open. We can still drive to Sainsburys or Tesco or wherever and do a big shop like before, or walk/bus to local shop for those who don't drive.

My understanding is that in England stores will not cordon off non essentials anyway like in Wales. I plan to do one big shop a week as always at my local supermarket, wearing a mask and social distancing like I have been doing for the last few months. This is still allowed isn't it?

So why are people panic buying?

Dunno, but I’ve got my Ocado order coming on Wednesday so I’m alright Jack

wetotter · 01/11/2020 12:34

I was going to buy some cheap (ideally bogoff) chicken for the pampered pooch, plus a load of human treat foods (good for morale in coming weeks) but took one look at the queue for Lidl and abandoned the plan

So I suspect shops will once again look as if locusts have been though them, and there will be outages of some items for the next couple of weeks. But I hope the supermarkets and distributors have learned from March/April and that it'll hold up OK

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 01/11/2020 12:34

Maybe people are trying to minimise the number of supermarkets shops they have to make?

Or they are just selfish knobs. Take your pick?

MagicSummer · 01/11/2020 12:36

@RedToothBrush - I agree about Click and Collect. There are always loads of slots at my local Sainsbury's - just checked and they are available for every day and time this week. Sometimes it's more convenient than a delivery too as you can decide where to pack everything in the car rather than have it all dumped on your doorstep.

Me too! Plus I have managed to book Waitrose all through November. Yippee!!
StealthPolarBear · 01/11/2020 12:38

I've just been to tesco and it seemed normal to me. No queues to get in.
The tip on the other hand... People are panic tipping :)

Am walking n Wales and we have been on lockdown for 2 weeks now. Honestly, the shops are fine wrt stock. Plenty of loo roll and pasta. Morrisons was low on poncey sugar but there was loads of the normal stuff. If anyone in England is fretting that lockdown will be like last time, it truly hasn't been like that in the last couple of weeks here.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 01/11/2020 12:50

Yes, the tip fills me with fear at the thought of the queues. I walk past people's houses who are having building work done and have skip envy. I used to just cover their new extensions Grin

Mumofsend · 01/11/2020 12:51

Is there any news on tips staying open? Surely they are essential

StealthPolarBear · 01/11/2020 12:51

What type of sugar is poncey?
Well my tip trip was eventually successful, feel very sorry for the people who work there whose job now seems to be just directing traffic in the cold :(

Bwlch · 01/11/2020 12:52

Plenty of delivery slots round here though

I last had a delivery in March. I've not been able to get a slot since.

I must get DH to hitch up the trailer because we are down to the last 40 loo rolls.

Bwlch · 01/11/2020 12:55

Also you can book rolling slots if you have a delivery pass. I'm surprised how many people don't know this

What is a rolling slot? It conjures up visions of them chucking your stuff out of the van as they drive past your house without stopping.

DH has been to the tip this morning as we stuff that is unsafe to store here over a lockdown.

Said it wasn't too bad.

Tbh the place that would give the cold sweats more is B&Q (even though that will be open still). And Ikea (which I also am led to believe won't close this time - though could be wrong about).

shudder

RedToothBrush · 01/11/2020 13:01

Morrisons was low on poncey sugar

SHIT.

I've not stockpiled poncy sugar.

runs off to the supermarket

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 01/11/2020 13:06

Poncey sugar is the soft, golden light stuff that ds was looking for to do some baking. Also caster sugar. I am a terrible baker and I have no idea why he can't use normal white. I bought muscovado - I have no idea what it's for!
Am due an IKEA trip. Think I might order online and pay the extortionate delivery charge. Since I started my diet I can see no value to actually going as I am not allowed to buy marabou or dime chocolate!

Oly4 · 01/11/2020 13:10

Because they are selfish? It’s all so unnecessary

baroqueandblue · 01/11/2020 13:22

Please tell me nobody has heard it mooted that public transport might close (as suggested upthread)?! I do my bit for the planet by not running a car (never even learned to drive) and am not vulnerable enough to be on delivery VIP lists but have multiple health issues that mean I need transport back from the supermarket with shopping. Just before last national lockdown I fractured my spine but at least I could get buses 😲

RedToothBrush · 01/11/2020 13:23

Shit.
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Billingtons-Sugar-Light-Muscovado-1-x-500-g/353080394975?hash=item52353b44df:g:E6sAAOSw-2lewsrw

Quite the market.
£5.69 for 500g. Only 1 left. 14 sold.

Normally £1.70 (according to Sainsers website) or £1.62 (from Asda).

PickAChew · 01/11/2020 13:28

If you were at those supermarkets to witness those queues then, surely, you are part of the queue?

letsdolunch321 · 01/11/2020 13:39

What is wrong with people, panic buying happened last lockdown (March - July) when the situation was all very new to people. WHY they are doing it now is beyond me!!!
If everyone shopped like they usually do, there would be enough for everyone.

Selfish fuckers.

madcatladyforever · 01/11/2020 13:41

*SHIT.

Grin Grin Grin

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 01/11/2020 13:43

Who are these people spending over a fiver on sugar? Coffee or chocolate, I would understand

madcatladyforever · 01/11/2020 13:44

My house is totally clear of food and I've ordered a massive box of the exante diet (600 calorie a day LCD)

That's literally all there is to eat in my house. I WILL lose that last three stone no matter what it takes.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 01/11/2020 13:47

I admire your commitment. Hope it works for you Smile
