Second lockdown= clinically vulnerable need to shield?

ginglebellsginglebells · 31/10/2020 18:11

Anyone know whether the possible announcement of a second lockdown will mean those who previously were shielding will have to shield again?

Doubt it. As a pregnant secondary school teacher I very much feel I'm going to be thrown to the wolves...

ginglebellsginglebells · 31/10/2020 18:16

Definitely, @bumblingalonghappily

I have a heart condition and I'm a deputy head in Primary. Our families were out mixing all through the previous lockdown, despite our pleas for them to maintain social distance and keep each other safe.

No idea what will happen, but definitely feels like school staff are treated as collateral damage.

I'm just hoping there will be clarity on those whomare extremely clinically vulnerable (the elderly, and rpthe clonically vulnerable did not have to,shield, but were expected to be utterly diligent at following the rules, and I expect that will stay the same)

I think it'll start with 'shield lite' - the shielding advice from the start of June to the pause, which allowed daily exercise and for single people to form a support bubble with one other person.

Ecosse · 31/10/2020 18:18

Shielding should have been reintroduced weeks ago. It would have really reduced hospital admissions.

QueenPaws · 31/10/2020 18:19

I'm ECV and my consultant advised me to carry on shielding as I'm fortunate to be able to WFH

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 31/10/2020 18:20

Does anyone know how many of the recently hospitalised were on the shielding list?

I've not seen breakdowns other than by age, which I'd course was not a shielding criterion

ginglebellsginglebells · 31/10/2020 19:09

So if ECV can work from home, they should, but schools remain open.

No recall to shielding in its full form, but I think he said that if you cannot WFH then you stay here me (on furlough?)

Like CV, ECV are to be extremely diligent in reducing contact with others and following lockdown rules to the letter.

At least exercise is permitted!

Bubblemonkey · 31/10/2020 19:15

for fucksakes. I want to shield. I do not want to be at work when there is now more cases in the hospital than there was when I went off.

I can't even work from home.

bag of bollocks.

SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 19:18

The original shielding list got it wrong.
It was based on flu.

Those most at risk are people with diabetes (1 in 4 of the deaths), cardiovascular conditions, hypertension, and kidney issues.

It's looking increasingly like immunosuppression does not increase the risk (and in fact might protect).

They won't want to do shielding again. There are too many extremely clinically vulnerable including many working in healthcare and schools. Diabetes and hypertension are very common. Then there's obesity. Also common. They can't afford to lose so much of the workforce.

All that makes it ever more important to take effective containment measures.

Iheartbaby · 31/10/2020 19:19

I was confused with what he said, he seemed to rush his sentence. I thought he said if you can’t work from home then you must stay at home

Tyzz · 31/10/2020 19:20

Not shielding as before but ecv to be extra vigilant and crucially if they can't wfh to still stay at home.

tobee · 31/10/2020 19:22

Presumably they're not reintroducing shielding so they don't need to give help with the food boxes etc?

Not government but I haven't heard supermarkets are re starting priority slots?

tobee · 31/10/2020 19:23

@Tyzz

Not shielding as before but ecv to be extra vigilant and crucially if they can't wfh to still stay at home.

That's very confusing!

WhenDoWeEnterTier4 · 31/10/2020 19:26

His public speaking is shit (mine is too, that's why it isn't my job!) he mumbled parts but several of you heard the same nonsense I did. If you can't work from home, stay at home. Erm, clear as ever BlowJob!

QueenPaws · 31/10/2020 19:28

@SheepandCow I think that's if you're immunosuppressed via meds as the meds protect. Or something
I'm immunocompromised via being neutropenic and my consultant still wants me avoiding people/work. It's if I get pneumonia as a side really

SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 19:39

@QueenPaws
I've been reading that doctors have been surprised that it hasn't been as deadly as expected for transplant and cancer patients, for example.

Obviously being already vulnerable, those patients and people in your situation absolutely should continue to be as careful as possible.

The very highest risk is to those with diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular conditions, and obesity. That doesn't mean others aren't also at invested risk.

Kenworthington · 31/10/2020 19:42

My dm should have been on the shielding list last time I think but never got the letter but in the end she ended up being very poorly with a huge heart attack and is now in a nursing home. She is type one diabetic with heart failure and vascaular dementia. I’m not going to be able to visit her am I? She’s recently moved care homes and I have a visit booked for next weekend which was the next available slot. I may not see her again. Or my dad who’s also late stage dementia. This is fucking shit. She may not remember me by December Sad

That’s what I thought too. If you can’t work from home, stay at home. It wasn’t clear
AnneTwackie · 31/10/2020 19:47

I’m so sorry @Kenworthington, hope they will allow you to bring it forward

SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 19:48

I'm so sorry @Kenworthington
I hope there's a way for you to visit her with some kind of precautions put in place.

It's a disgrace that diabetics and cardiovascular patients weren't put on the shielding list.

SheepandCow · 31/10/2020 19:53

I think he was deliberately unclear.
Many of the very highest risk weren't on the original shielding list.

The NHS is already under pressure. Schools too. Boris can't outright tell extremely clinically vulnerable to shield - because it's now crystal clear who is most vulnerable.

Many more people than the original shielding list. Millions. And that includes a large proportion of essential workers.

TheMonaOgg · 31/10/2020 20:01

Does anyone have any hard info immunosuppression? My son is a kidney transplant recipient and I'm very worried about him but there seems to be no advice out there.

My Dh is too! Can't find anything but I think it's because there's no clear cut information yet. Sometimes I read immunosuppressed might help, sometimes not. I think it's a juggling act. Overactive immune response can be bad, as can under active. Iyswim.

tobee · 31/10/2020 20:05

Sorry I mean can't find anything definitive
