Tier FOUR?!

Bbq1 · 27/10/2020 11:00

I'm in Liverpool where the good news is that the rate of Covid spreading is actually decreasing. Still very high apparently but nevertheless the infection rate is going down. However, I heard yesterday that if the rate hasn't gone down sufficiently by mid November then the government may well introduce Tier 4 which will close restaurants and non essential shops. Anybody else heard this? Won't that just be another full lockdown?

Liverpool and tier 4:

What tier 4 might mean (note, all speculation):

www.independent.co.uk/life-style/tier-4-lockdown-coronavirus-restrictions-rules-b1345219.html

I suspect that it will include a recall of the ECV to shielding, because of the need to stop those who are most likely to have it more severely filling all the hospital beds

starfish4 · 27/10/2020 11:07

I read yesterday something similar was a possibility for a different region. Hang in there, my DD is in Edinburgh and numbers have come down quite a bit in the last week, their restrictions were brought in about 2.5 weeks ago.

Juniperandrage · 27/10/2020 11:27

That's what's its like in Wales. Plus we are not allowed to meet others

Scottishgirl85 · 27/10/2020 12:22

The tier 3 is a joke, we're not going to get anywhere without further restrictions in hot spots. I'd welcome a tier 4!

Missandra · 27/10/2020 12:44

It’s all just speculation. The independent one talks about many different options.

GirlCrush · 27/10/2020 12:46

then tier 5......6 by february i reckon!

especially after a non compliant christmas, new year, hogmanay.....

HesterShaw1 · 27/10/2020 12:50

I have every sympathy with him for the loss of his brother, but I don't think that this should be allowed to influence his decision. It should be evidence based, not emotion based.

On the other hand this could be the way the article is spun. Journalists seem to think we need an emotional punch to engage with an article.

HesterShaw1 · 27/10/2020 12:51

And I don't mean that to sound as cold as maybe it sounded.

WitchesSpelleas · 27/10/2020 12:55

The present tiers aren't being applied logically so I'd have little hope of a Tier 4 being introduced in any kind of sensible way. West Yorkshire has more cases than South Yorkshire, yet is still in Tier 2.

thesunwillout · 27/10/2020 12:57

Yes it's already happening in Wales. Daughter having a fab time at uni. Can't even buy crap in Lidl, cos the aisle is forbidden.

BlanchflowerTulip · 27/10/2020 13:08

One thing you can say about the government is that they're really keen not to call a lockdown a lockdown.

Tier 4, Tier 3+, Tier 5, Circuit Break or Fire Break, it all amounts to the same thing.

toxtethOgradyUSA · 27/10/2020 13:17

The Government is starting to wake up to the economic Armageddon coming down the road. Further restrictions will be a last resort, and rightly so. At present, only those who are not seriously impacted financially or job wise are calling for them.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 27/10/2020 13:20

You can do so much in tiers 2 and 3 that it all seems a bit bonkers!

The only way to stop the spread is to really limit movement and people interacting. That’s what’s happening in Wales atm. Let’s see if it’s for long enough to be effective.

Brighterthansunflowers · 27/10/2020 13:37

It’s not rocket science that a currently undefined tier 4 may be needed if tier 3 restrictions don’t work. and that since Liverpool was first into tier 3, it could well be first into tier 4.

There’s still a fair bit open under tier 3 which could be deemed nonessential and get closed in a tier 4

MoirasRoses · 27/10/2020 14:46

It’s all a bloody lockdown. No matter what they try & call it. 🙄 going to completely destroy the bloody economy .. 🤦🏼‍♀️

The same people calling for lockdown will be moaning when about huge austerity cuts over the next decade to pay for all this. I think some people genuinely think you can print money to pay for all this (including the scientific advisors from Sage).
psychomath · 27/10/2020 18:26

I'd be surprised as infection rates seem to be falling quite rapidly in Liverpool and neighbouring LAs (in fact they were already starting to drop when tier 3 restrictions were introduced), and presumably the intention with a localised tier 4 is to bring it in if tier 3 doesn't seem to be doing anything. Not sure why you'd increase restrictions if new cases are already going down.

That's assuming the government don't suddenly find a bunch more positive tests that have fallen off the bottom of an Excel sheet, of course Halloween Hmm

Ponoka7 · 27/10/2020 18:57

I thought that it was our hospital capacity that went towards what restrictions were put in place. When we went into tier three we were at 80%. Overnight we've had 24 further deaths. I know of four people who've been admitted into hospital in the last two days, just with Covid. Surgeons are already saying that they are cancelling appointments.

I didn't agree with the soft plays and other stuff closing and I think to balance out the suicide/depression rates, as well as the economic effects, they've got to think carefully.

Essexgirlupnorth · 27/10/2020 19:07

In greater Manchester been in equivalent of tier 2 restrictions since end if July with an infection rate less then some places currently in tier 1 spend week wrangling over going into tier 3 doesn't seem to be making much difference to infection rates so guess we will be first in tier 4. Just hope they don't close the schools again. Just sick it now just want to see my family I've not seen in months.

psychomath · 27/10/2020 19:49

Ponoka7 I don't know for sure, but I'd have thought restrictions would be decided based on cases because deciding based on anything else would mean they were brought in too late. The people who are going to be hospitalised in the next few weeks have already caught it, so introducing new restrictions now wouldn't help with that.

Orcus · 27/10/2020 20:28

Well they're clearly not going to go for the national lockdown, ineffective attempts at local containment especially areas where there aren't many Tory seats to worry about losing are the preferred strategy. Obviously they don't work, but Johnson will have to be seen to be doing something and this is the preferred something. They've made that very clear.

Torvean32 · 27/10/2020 21:58

Short 3 week lockdowns seem to work better than being in restrictions for months.

MoirasRoses · 27/10/2020 22:43

Thing is, I’d take a short 3 week lockdown. With a guarantee it’ll end after 3 weeks. But that’s not the case. We’ve been in the equivalent of tier 2 since July. We had no financial support until London went into tier 2. They clearly don’t have an exit strategy for those in tier 2/3. Unless it affects the south. We just get forgotten about.

Are you in tier 3 ? So what part of tier 3 is a joke ? If people are complying they are not seeing anyone out of their household. I am in tier 3. Haven’t seen my parents in their house since 7 March as even when restrictions were eased the risk was too high - particularly as my dd is undergoing chemo. Similiarly dh hasn’t been in his parents home since March despite them living 5 min walk away. My dd is away at Uni and ny dh is already talking about isolating from her when she comes home and we will not see either set of parents so looking forward to you telling me which part of this is a joke ?
ChristmasinJune · 28/10/2020 10:52

I'm in Liverpool and would welcome Tier 4 as long as the parameters to come down the tiers again were very clear (EG, level 3 is 200-400 cases per 100,000 and tier 4 is 400+ cases per 100, 000)

The economy is the big worry of course so I'd hope that the current fall in cases is sustained and we don't need it. That's up to us really though isn't it? Still not enough people taking it seriously at this level.
