Apparently they're gearing up for this next.
Sooner or later it'll be 'Tier 10- shot on the spot if you leave your home.'

@littlefatso

but a vaccine is so close, we could save loads of lives by locking down now until a vaccine, THEN rebuild the economy
Do you really believe that?

I’ll be absolutely amazed if there’s a vaccine (whether or not it’s effective) within the next six months

If you read other threads on MN you’ll learn that most of us aren’t confident to have the vaccine anyway..
littlefatso · 26/10/2020 16:27

yes I do believe it. NHS staff are having it in December, to be rolled out tothe vulnerable early Spring.

Vaccine might be next year and healthy 20-50 year olds (like I assume the majority of people on here are) wouldn't be eligible for the vaccine unless they worked in care homes or medical frontlines.

OMG really?! That's a huge piece of news the government has decided not to tell us and no leaks from the NHS either. And nothing from other countries either. Amazing Grin
nannynick · 26/10/2020 16:31

Under the 3 tiers we have currently in England, childcare and education continues. So it would make sense to me that if there is a tier 4 created then it would involve closure of schools, nurseries, childminders like we had back in April. So open for key workers children only. Tier 5 I suppose would then be full closure of childcare and education.

They don't want to close schools but at some point that has to happen... maybe closing to certain year groups would be a first step.
Who knows what will happen... we won't know what is in Tier 4 until the powers at be tell us.

ThornAmongstRoses · 26/10/2020 16:32

I doubt anything will change unless the country is put into complete lockdown again.

The Tier system is just delaying the inevitable.

Strangely the government created tiers for education but nowhere has moved to Tier 2 educationally (secondary schools operating rotas of 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off)

No vaccine has passed stage 3 trials. Yes it’s true there are plans for staff to start being given it but only if it is actually approved, which it isn’t. If we are very very lucky there will be good news on it by Christmas but early 2021 is more likely.

They've not finished testing!
Rosehip10 · 26/10/2020 16:39

@littlefatso just because the daily mail says something doesn't make it accurate!

nannynick · 26/10/2020 16:41

It is odd how they have created tiers for education but then have not followed those.

monkeytennis97 · 26/10/2020 16:46

@nannynick yup that's what many of us teachers think... I think it'll be tier 50 by the time they realize that doing what other countries have done (Italy, Poland, Russia, US, Germany to name a few ie remote or blended learning for secondary) might make a difference.

shitonitbambinos · 26/10/2020 16:51

@MaxNormal

People have got total lockdown fatigue, of course they have. What else did anyone expect? You can't keep making people's lives a misery indefinitely.
That sounds so ridiculously entitled. No one is doing this on purpose or trying to spite you. It's a pandemic. It's shit for everyone.
BlanchflowerTulip · 26/10/2020 16:53

I'm slightly concerned that the vaccine is seen by some as an instant magic bullet and we all snap back to normal.

shitonitbambinos · 26/10/2020 16:53

@BlanchflowerTulip

How is another extended national lockdown going to be paid for? Serious question. If we lockdown again we're looking at economic ruin on a scale that no-one will have ever seen before that won't leave anyone untouched.
But if people cut social contacts like it's recommended (as in, people saying tier 3 residents are still meeting up in houses etc) it wouldn't get to the point of a full tier 4 lockdown or whatever it's called. It'll only get that far if enough people to tip the balance, do what they like and sack it off.
ifonly4 · 26/10/2020 17:01

If tier 3 isn't working in an area, then you need another level. Unfortunately, those that don't play ball, make it a lot harder for others who live within guidelines in terms of the restrictions on their lives and those that genuinely get covid due to having to work/shop, and then the consequences of being infected.

Hollyhobbi · 26/10/2020 17:01

You think Tier 4 is bad, try Level 5! That's what we have in Ireland! Mainly cause we're running out of ICU and critical care beds.

annabel85 · 26/10/2020 17:02

@Spam88

Well obviously there needs to be a higher tier than tier 3, given you can still go out for a meal and travel if you're tier 3.
Tier 3 is a joke. Will make fuck all difference compared to tier 2, especially as the rules aren't enforced at all.
RunBackwards · 26/10/2020 17:08

Putting more restrictions in will make no difference if no one complies.

The problem we have is that even those in charge don't seem to believe in the rules. They do make (some) sense in that every contact that can be avoided will help, even if there are still lots of contacts (eg schools) going on, but that isn't being properly explained or at least, not often enough.

Unfortunately we did, even if it's boring now, switch from a majority attitude of "the rules must be folllowed" to the "rules are stupid" following the Cummings affair and no matter how many rules are put in place, that's not going away.

They need to get the message out better. The rules don't necessarily need changing but they do need following and we can see on here at the moment that few people get that.

annabel85 · 26/10/2020 17:10

@InFlagranteDerelicto

It's because people are not following the rules. And people are actively & socially discouraged from reporting, in RL & online, i.e. "it's none of your business", you don't know their circumstances", & "snitches get stitches" type of responses on at least half a dozen threads every day on here.

FWIW, I know someone who lives in a tier 3 area. Not following the rules at all & doesn't care. Works with people with severe physical & mental disabilities in a residential facility. But they got quite stressed when they thought I'd mentioned them in passing to a council worker (when I rang the council about an issue I was having) - so they know damned well they're breaking restrictions. I despair of people sometimes.

People (not everyone but a lot of people) will do what they can get away with.

If rules aren't being in any way enforced then they'll just be ignored.

There's only two ways you'll get people to take it seriously: a lockdown (with at least a degree of enforcement) or high enforcement.

But the rules are ridiculous as well. Tier 3 but you can go to all the shops, you can go out for a meal, you can still go to Wetherspoons and schools and colleges are still open. It's no wonder people carry on business as usual and don't take guidelines seriously.

How on earth are unenforced tier 3 measures meant to get the R rate down? Yeah, we can blame people, but blaming people for being people is pointless.

It's all very interesting. Ireland was one of the places that locked down hard early. They do seem to be getting this second wave harder (or earlier?)

We have a huge amount of conspiracy theorists who don't believe in the virus and obviously don't comply. These feckers are more interested in gathering in Dublin every week and shouting about their rights. The guards arrested some of them on Friday at a "protest" so maybe that'll make a bit of a difference.

Hollyhobbi · 26/10/2020 19:01

@Cuppachino to be honest I'm more worried about the gobshites in the GAA! I mean passing around a cup for everyone to drink out of? Do they not have parents or grandparents? Also there have been loads of outbreaks in creches and schools. My nephew is in a creche pod where a child tested positive and my sister wasn't even told to bring him for a test! Just to keep him at home for a week. That they didn't have the staff to mind them. I haven't been in the city centre since March but everyone in our local shops/coffee shops are sanitising and wearing masks. I agree that a certain Ms. O'D and her followers aren't helping though!

Hollyhobbi · 26/10/2020 19:13

I don't think our second wave is that bad. In the North, population about 1.8m, they had more positive cases than us last week. We have a population of about 4.9 million. I'm just after seeing that the North are looking to transfer some patients down to us so they are obviously in a right state up there. Also the President has just signed into law new fines for breaking lockdown. That should help too.
