To ask if your children wear masks

FatimaMunchy · 22/10/2020 19:06

Been to the hospital today and saw a number of children, some probably 5 or 6, wearing masks. I asked a nurse if children had to wear masks as it was a hospital, and she said not that she was aware of.

OP posts:

@Fungster why am I a moron for not asking my 8year old to wear a mask?
Yes he has been in busy places, I’m a single parent so he has to. But he doesn’t have to wear one, has no interest in doing so and to be perfectly honest even if they said kids had to wear them I probably still wouldn’t make him unless he was ok with it.

theDudesmummy · 23/10/2020 17:01

My 11 year old DS can, even though he is autistic it happens not to be a problem for him (in fact he wears a mask around the house some of the time!). So he does, might as well.

Fluffybutter · 23/10/2020 17:02

@onedayinthefuture

I can't believe children 2 and up are wearing masks. It's fucking ridiculous. I can understand hospital settings if children want to but not elsewhere. Bullshit! And before someone says I would hate for them to pass on the virus and kill someone, I hope you never went anywhere before with a cold (a normal cold can kill an old person), I hope you don't drive a car.....!!
And how does someone else’s child wearing a mask affect you one single jot? It doesn’t , so calm down and stop being so dramatic
flaviaritt · 23/10/2020 17:07

And how does someone else’s child wearing a mask affect you one single jot?

How does someone else slapping their child affect anyone else one single jot? It doesn’t. But the way society treats children is everyone’s business, isn’t it?

GoneFishingAgain · 23/10/2020 17:09

Yes. We live in Scotland where they are mandatory for over 5s. My children have never complained about wearing them (including an hour per day on a school bus).

HazeyJaneII · 23/10/2020 17:21

@flaviaritt

I must have missed it, but is there a post here that says 2 year olds are wearing them all day in nursery?

There are plenty of posts not ruling it out, implying such small children have no reason not to wear a mask. They are not specifying context, and I was clear that I mean for longer periods of time, not a minute here or there.

I can’t remember where I read the 20 minute guidance, but certainly if they get wet, which they will if you are breathing into them for any length of time, they might as well not be there. I’m not forcing my kids to cover their mouths and noses for hours when the coverings are probably filthy anyway.

So no one actually said about wearing a face covering for a whole nursery session (I think this would be pretty unusual)

I'm not sure there is any evidence that wearing a face covering for longer than 20 minutes has any negative consequences.

My dh and dds wears face coverings for fairly long periods, dh said the only time it gets wet is if it rains and he's worn it outside. The dd's say theirs never get wet. I wear them in shops, probably for no longer than an hour and have never noticed it getting wet.

We have lots of fabric face coverings, they get washed after wearing. For medical matters we've usually worn a disposable one, so fresh from the pack and then thrown away afterwards. I genuinely have no idea where all these filthy, sodden face masks would be coming from.

Yes, the way society treats children is everyone's business, and the way society works is by everyone look8ng after each other (one of the principles of mask wearing - I wear my mask to protect you, you wear your mask to protect me) A young child willingly wearing a face covering, is really not the same thing as someone slapping a child. If you really believe it is, then maybe you should report it when you see it.
flaviaritt · 23/10/2020 17:36

You can see the thread. There are lots of people not specifying how long their young children are forced into face coverings for. I don’t think it’s okay for any longer than strictly necessary in the case of a 2 year old, unless the child is vulnerable, including nursery sessions/shopping/public transport.

flaviaritt · 23/10/2020 17:38

Okay, I will. You’re right.

Yes - in my state we're pretty strict on mask-wearing, but it's not required in childcare settings.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when flaviaritt calls... the police...? social services...? to report a parent for being in charge of a child who is willingly wearing a mask.

You’re joking right? You’re comparing hitting a child to them wearing some fabric over the lower part of their face ? I’ve heard it all now .
Lindy2 · 23/10/2020 17:52

My 12 year old and 9 year old do. They are perfectly able to wear them and therefore do, to try and keep everyone safer.

I think most children over 5 are perfectly able to wear masks. It's adults fussing (as usual) saying they won't like it. Children are far more resilient than most adults give them credit for.

When you say “comparing”, I think you are suggesting I mean “equating”. I’m not equating the two things. But yes, I am comparing them. I am saying in neither case does it affect the onlooker.

flaviaritt · 23/10/2020 17:54

Because no child “willingly” does anything they don’t actually want to do at the instruction of a parent. Oh no. That never happens.

flaviaritt · 23/10/2020 17:55

Anyway, I’ve given this too much of my attention. Some of you disagree with me. I’m okay with it. Bye.

DazzlingDancer · 23/10/2020 18:22

They would if we visited a hospital

Are you seriously going to call the police? Please may I listen in? I would so love to see that.

This gleeful tone isn’t nice to see. Please leave me alone now.

Sure, just as soon as you stop calling people child abusers for asking their children to wear masks.
flaviaritt · 23/10/2020 18:43

People aren’t advocating asking their children here. They are saying they put them on their children.

Anyway, do what you like. When you say “as soon as you stop”, what you mean is you want me to change my mind for no good reason at all, and that isn’t going to happen, so I’ll just ignore you instead.

Hopefully you'll be a bit slower to call people child abusers in future though. It's not nice to see. Perhaps you could leave them alone now.

No, I won’t be pretending to think putting masks on babies is okay just to make you feel better. Funnily enough. It is abuse, and I will say it as many times as I like.

HoldMyLobster · 23/10/2020 18:53

Not one single person has advocating putting masks on babies anywhere.

In fact they've specifically said this:

"Of course my baby doesn't wear them. And our country's cases are almost non-existant..."

"Have a baby (4 months old) obviously she doesn’t."
