The country is falling apart, mass unemployment looming, unrest, mental health crisis, education of a generation screwed, people in care homes isolated and alone......what the fucking hell is going on. I can't take anymore

OP posts:
whereisthejoy · 20/10/2020 20:40

We will be okay. Try not to focus on the negatives OP although I know it's tough.

needanewidea · 20/10/2020 20:40
@needanewidea
The hardship of the next couple of years will almost certainly be thanks to a fairly equal split between Brexit and Covid. But now the Tories get to blame everything on Covid and the right wing press will spread it as gospel.

Labour will be blamed for not applauding the government’s mistakes throughout the Covid crisis and not “believing in Britain enough” as living standards fall thanks to Brexit. It will all be Labours fault despite being out of power for 15 years.
Yup, that's about the size of it Sad

Unsure33 · 20/10/2020 20:42

I remember the foot and mouth crisis . It was devastating.

There is hope .

Vaccine hopefully on way and new faster tests that are reported through your phone .

We will get there but we will all be paying for the support we have had.

We should be treating it like a war and pulling together and trust me there are other countries that are struggling even more than us . No lockdown does not mean businesses are immune from the affect of this virus.

XingMing · 20/10/2020 20:54

Large parts of the EU are just as badly affected by COVID19 as the UK. The Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain and Italy to start. Their governments are just as disfunctional as ours. Grow up, behave like an adult, follow the sensible rules, wear a mask. Treat COVID like a problem you want to help solve, instead of thinking it's a petty rule you can ignore.

BlueBlancmange · 20/10/2020 20:56

@Boredbumhead

Covid is mild for many if not most people. It is weakening over time. We have roofs over our heads and food on the table (most of us). We are living in peaceful times. The weather has been beautiful this year. Wee are innovating new communication tools and technologies. There is lots of room for hope.
I've not read anything that says the virus is weakening. Quite the opposite, that is just as virulent as it was in spring. However I understand that mask wearing has meant more people are receiving a lower viral load which is thought to lead to milder disease in general.
Dongdingdong · 20/10/2020 20:59

Christ there are alot of dramatic people on this board, and that's coming from somebody with an anxiety disorder.

Covid is the new Brexit on MN.

user1471565182 · 20/10/2020 21:06

Have a crises, tories use it to shovel public money to their mates, rant at anybody who complains about them being snowflakes and THE WAR. repeat over and over and over.

1dayatatime · 20/10/2020 21:07

I heard a quote that sums it up:

"Enjoy covid because the future is going to be hell "

Australia77 · 20/10/2020 21:10

It is hard to see the light. However, I truly believe that next spring is the light at the end of the tunnel. Vaccines are coming - I truly believe they are. We will stagger through winter, it will be shit, there will be ongoing restrictions and bumbling U turns by the government. However, there is hope. I am coping by taking it day by day and holding on for next spring. Day by day, step by step.

XingMing · 20/10/2020 21:12

Not convinced by your read on public policy just shovelling money at Tory mates. I think money would be shovelled at anyone with a plausible idea at the moment regardless of their political leaning.

Thewiseoneincognito · 20/10/2020 21:13

Yes it’s shit. It was always going to be shit once this thing got out into the wild, whatever it is. We rode out the tail end of the first wave over a well timed summer, we had a taste of life pre-covid. Briefly.

Now the real work begins. The struggle will be hard, the road excruciatingly long, a winter like no other that will last for months.

Others are right, this is our war.

My advice is, Acceptance is key. Dwelling on the negative will only bring more negativity. Keep you and yours safe and in order as best as you can. Don’t take on the burden of the populace.

Winter is coming, but following is the spring. 🌱 The new world beckons.

toxtethOgradyUSA · 20/10/2020 21:15

BlueBlancmange there is plenty of anecdotal stuff out there that the virus is weakening, I have read a few dispatches from physicians in Italy who say the strain(s) they are now dealing with are responding much better to treatment. But ... no detailed research on this as yet (and even when there is, it will doubtless be spun and turned on its head).

If you haven't worked out that this is basically what the Tories do all the time, you've not been paying attention.

It's not about shoving money at plausible ideas. It's about turning any situation into a profit opportunity for their mates.

Actually and on a positive note it's not entirely global, the Chinese economy has recovered and is doing really well with a growth of 4.9%

Good post

Even after the darkest night the dawn comes.

We’ll get there. Hang in there x

DaphneduWarrior · 20/10/2020 21:19

I have a mate who works as an immunologist and whose dept is involved in the development of the vaccine. I work in a gov dept (on a fixed term contract so no pension and no fat cat salary!) and have lots of friends and ex-colleagues who work in government, the City and local politics.

All that said, here's my view...

I think without Brexit, we'd have come out of this by next Xmas. Everyone who needs to be vaccinated will be by then. Without Brexit, the economy would have started to recover; we might even have been able to put some positive changes in place as a result of the pandemic (e.g. more working from home, closer ties within neighbourhoods, more funding for mental health care).

With a no-deal Brexit looming, we are absolutely fucked. Next year is going to be very very hard - and I say that as someone with a white collar job, money in the bank and lots of support. There will be food shortages; there will be riots; more of the NHS will be privatised so services will be cut; unemployment will soar. I'm in my late 40s and remember the miners' strikes - I think unemployment and poverty in many areas will be comparable to that.

Johnson will be gone by March, leaving someone else (probably Sunak) to clear up the mess. I wouldn't vote Tory if you paid me, but at least then we'll have someone with a brain in charge. However, he'll be looking to make money by any means possible. That means giving contracts for government work to the highest bidder, regardless of quality. It means raising taxes. It means benefits will be cut AGAIN.

I think the worst will be over by 2022, but the recession will go on for 2-3 years beyond that.

I'm sorry to be the voice of doom, but if you're making decisions about buying or selling houses, or which job to take, or whether you can afford to put your kid through private school - go for the safest option you can. We're all going to need to get our heads down and endure for a while.

FrustratedC0ffeeDrinker · 20/10/2020 21:20

I’m going through an acrimonious divorce so the whole Covid thing is just a minor distraction as far as I’m concerned. I’m alive - that’s what matters.

Mistigri · 20/10/2020 21:21

Not in Manchester apparently.

However, the money will only be shovelled enthusiastically in your direction if you're a pest control company offering to supply dodgy PPE to the NHS.

Bollss · 20/10/2020 21:23

@PumpkinetChocolat

Some of us have become extremely sensitive Hmm It seems our rich countries have become so spoilt that any inconvenience and we crumble completely. God forbid we ever run into REAL problems!

I don't wish for them, but I was marginally more concerned when we were faced with terrorists attacks not that long ago than the few restrictions we have now. I guess unless people are disturbed in their own little bubble they don't really care?

An inconvenience? Well if that's all this has been for you then are are very fucking lucky indeed aren't you?

Quite.

This too shall pass.

Isolatedizzy · 20/10/2020 21:34

I am dreading the next 6 months and was feeling really down about it at the weekend and I'm generally quite resilient!

So I've decided to break it down into chunks and events so at the moment I'm focusing on Halloween, I have some ghost fairy lights up and I don't even have any kids!

Then bonfire night, might cook some nice food and buy some sparklers, then it's Remembrance Sunday, will plan to go to an outdoor service and then I can concentrate on Christmas! Start planning food and presents!

I've also planted some bulbs to try and look forward to when things are better!

I realise I'm incredibly lucky, I'm working from home but it's just me & DH, both sets of parents are already gone, my friends are my life but most of them are being really careful because they have elderly parents, I miss my work colleagues etc etc but back to the plan and the fairy lights! Oh and gin! Gin

Dee1975 · 20/10/2020 21:36

Not looking great. But there is one simple thing we can all do - social distance. And unfortunately people are not doing it. I don’t believe that the reason for high infections in areas is because people caught it from picking up a bag of food at the supermarket. It’s because people arnt bloody social distancing.
People need to stop breaking the rules / bending the rules / finding loop holes / whatever you want to call it.
I know plenty of people who moan about extra restrictions, blame the government, yet they are breaking the rules every day.

PumpkinetChocolat · 20/10/2020 21:36

I am still waiting to read what anyone has experienced that was more than an inconvenience TrustTheGeneGenie. I don't mean the dramatised version, just the real heartache that a few restrictions have caused.

I agree about Brexit destroying the country - but that was an outcome chosen by the majority. I am still unsure if that makes it worst or better, but we are getting everything we deserve there. We knew what was happening before the vote!

Cam77 · 20/10/2020 21:43

@1dayatatime

Ssshh we don’t get to talk about how evil China saved tens of thousands of lives through lockdown, kick ass track and trace system and how their economy has totally recovered. In fact they’re probably lying despite the 1000s of expats who can of course confirm everything (of course we don’t believe Chinese people as they are all “brainwashed”). Oh and btw those futuristic looking mega cities like Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chongqing, Hong Kong, etc are just holograms as is the 18,000km of high speed rail. China is still super poor.

Of course it’s not just China that has nailed the track and trace system - S.Korea, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan all doing a stellar job.

MadameBlobby · 20/10/2020 21:44

Things like cancer treatments being delayed are a bit more than an inconvenience
