Idiots not wearing masks on the bus

Dongdingdong · 20/10/2020 08:38

I live in London, don't own a car and occasionally have to take the bus to get to places.

Yesterday I got on the bus and counted five people not wearing masks. Two of them didn't have any masks on them at all, so might have been exempt or might not - who knows.

But the other three were wearing masks around their necks but not on their faces. The bus was quite busy and I was forced to stand near to one of these people, as there was nowhere to sit.

How selfish can you be to get on a bus and not give a damn if you infect other people? Does it really take much to move the mask from your neck to your face?

They were all young people so perhaps they simply don't care, as the risk to them is lower than other age groups. But they could try thinking of other people.

@Goldrabbitt22 🤣 were you wearing an oxygen-depriving face mask for long periods before Covid by any chance?

Horrible76 · 20/10/2020 10:27

Those of us who wear masks all know it can feel a bit hot and suffocating in certain circumstances, but I've never pulled it off my face for prolonged periods, or with others around. I sometimes pull it forwards to allow some air flow for a few seconds. So while it's legitimate that these people might need some breathing space, I'm not sure that's the way reasonable people go about getting it.

It's really hard not to look at stranger behaviour and get annoyed, after all it impacts all of us. But as a PP said, you can't control it. Just know you are doing your bit, and protecting those around you to the best of your ability.

"Covid idiots" love it, theres to many of them, if given up.

Good post but be careful - @OpheliasCrayon will be along to tell you that you’re pretentious and virtue signalling in a minute!

People who deliberately refuse to wear a mask without any health reason remind me that there are all kinds of people in this world 🤦‍♀️ Some people are just plain stupid. They must really have very little common sense and live a very restrictive life. Even if they are selfish and don’t care about protecting others, at least protect yourselves and your families from a virus that can cause severe disease in anyone regardless of age, gender and health. It’s not that hard is it?
Can you imagine surgeons not wearing masks whilst operating. If wearing masks isn’t effective against reducing transmission of pathogens then surgeons wouldn’t be wearing them. Don’t they ever think why it is that surgeons and doctors actually wear masks🙄
I’m not suprised though, because a lot of these anti mask wearers are probably the kind of people that don’t wash their hands after wiping their ar**s 🤢

'Stupid and selfish' is becoming almost as tedious as 'covidiots.' Like bloody parrots, I tell ya.

"There are visors for those who have issues which should lessen the impact on others."

Some people can't wear them ( such as my son)

"The only thing I would find excusable are those with real breathing difficulties"

Severe learning difficulty? Severe autism? Amongst other things.

It doesn’t make it less true though.

There are some people who genuinely can’t wear masks, but the majority of people not wearing masks when they should be are either stupid or selfish or both IME.

SleeplessGeordie · 20/10/2020 13:50

I understand your frustration, OP.
I find those who wear masks incorrectly really irritating. It's not even about the potential risk (or otherwise) it's the sheer nonsensical nature of it. People taking a stand against mask wearing I can deal with, it's at least a coherent position to take. But wearing one under your chin or with your nose sticking out - just why? Why bother at all?

PurpleFrames · 20/10/2020 13:55

I'm exempt from mask wearing and live in a high risk area. What I'm really sick of is all the mask-stapo twittering and bitching as if masks are the be all and end all!

Honestly if all you have in life to focus on is other people's masks you have it easy.

Yeah, being told you're 'virtue signalling' for those that can and do comply is pretty damned boring too. I wear one outside of work for the same reasons I wear one in work - to protect vulnerable people. That's my job, nice to know that some people think by trying to protect the people I care for in a way that limits their exposure to a virus that is highly likely to kill them and spread like wildfire (residential elderly care the age group that is most at risk) if brought in is 'virtue signalling'. Is doing other things that benefit them and not me also virtue signalling? Making sure they're fed and comfortable perhaps? That doesn't benefit me either. I wear one outside for the same reasons, because I can and because some people truly can't for whatever reason. But I agree with the OP - wearing one as a chin decoration is just pointless and yes I find it annoying too.
amicissimma · 20/10/2020 15:51

Wearing a mask if you can to help protect others = the right and decent thing to do.

Starting yet another thread about how good you are to wear a mask and some people aren't as good as you = virtue signalling.

JS87 · 20/10/2020 16:06

Anyway masks do benefit the wearer too (reduced viral load leading to less severe infection) so more fool them!

JS87 · 20/10/2020 16:08

If everyone who could wear one did then you and others who are exempt wouldn't have to suffer like this. Dr Fauci has stated that masks may be more important than a vaccine in the fight against covid-19 so to some extent they are the be all and end all (especially without a vaccine).

I don’t think the OP is starting a thread to show how “good” she is. I think she’s trying to raise awareness and start a discussion on the importance of mask wearing for those individuals who can. Just reading some of the comments here it’s obvious some people need to be educated on how viruses transmit and how we can do our bit to help lower the transmission and severity of the disease in order to return to a “normal” life faster. Some people here think you can get some type of brain injury/trauma by wearing a mask because of lack of oxygen 🤦‍♀️ They don’t stop to think that there would be other obvious tell tale signs if you were actually being deprived of oxygen.
