Idiots not wearing masks on the bus

68 replies

Dongdingdong · 20/10/2020 08:38

I live in London, don't own a car and occasionally have to take the bus to get to places.

Yesterday I got on the bus and counted five people not wearing masks. Two of them didn't have any masks on them at all, so might have been exempt or might not - who knows.

But the other three were wearing masks around their necks but not on their faces. The bus was quite busy and I was forced to stand near to one of these people, as there was nowhere to sit.

How selfish can you be to get on a bus and not give a damn if you infect other people? Does it really take much to move the mask from your neck to your face?

They were all young people so perhaps they simply don't care, as the risk to them is lower than other age groups. But they could try thinking of other people.

(although would dispute the implication that non-MW are all young)

On this particular bus they were all young, but yes - I’m sure there are older people who ignore the rules as well.

You’re right though, there’s no point getting wound up about it. It’s just hard not to feel despondent.

Whilst I think we should do whatever the rules say I think posts like this are just the OP wanting a great big pat on the back for being better than the people they've seen. It's virtue signalling to the extreme.

ODFOD. Why would I want a pat on the back for wearing a mask? It’s not exactly an achievement is it Confused

You sound like a total WUM.

No it isn't but what on earth are you hoping to gain by this post. The people you've seen won't read it. As I've said - if you're wearing a mask like that you know you're being a knob.

So why this post? To me it just seems like now you can publically feel good about the fact you're doing the right thing and they're doing the wrong thing.

And I don't know what WUM means but I can't say I'm really fussed whatever it does.

@SaskiaRembrandt

As PP have pointed out, masks are to protect other people not the wearer. Basically, if someone is not wearing a mask when they could, they are walking around saying 'look at me, I'm a selfish arsehole who couldn't give a shit about the health of other human beings'. That they try to hide behind people who genuinely can't wear masks makes them even bigger arseholes.
Well said - fully agree with that.
Dongdingdong · 20/10/2020 09:29

by pointing out how everyone else is being terrible and killing people immediately by not following the rules to the same exacting standard as yourself

Killing people immediately- WTF? Grin

Maybe they're not such idiots, after all.

Maybe they realise the terrible dangers associated with oxygen depravation from mask wearing - brain damage that's irreversible and damage to all organs of the body.

You wouldn't deliberately under water your body, just enough to keep hydrated to a certain degree but no optimal, and therefore, detrimental to the body in the longer term.

Why should it be any different with oxygen?

😂

I don’t feel good that they’re doing the wrong thing - quite the opposite. And it’s “publicly” Hmm

What? So, other MNers can rant about anything they like and often do, yet the OP, wanting to express her annoyance at this, is doing it purely to make herself feel good publicly?
Do you not realise how irrational that makes you sound?

I'm fine with being irrational though.

All our poor surgeons that are brain-damaged from their work :( thoughts & prayers

@Cloudybean

Another judging post. You do you. They'll do them. I'll do me.

Except that's not how it works is it, if something is being done for the benefit of others, ie wearing a mask. If they were exempt it's unlikely they'd have them around their necks, no?

And there's the problem really. If masks benefited the individual wearing them more than others then we'd probably see a lot more compliance. Everyone likes to shout about their rights but no one wants to accept any responsibility.

And as a pp said, myself, colleagues and a couple of family members have been wearing masks since the start, because of the jobs we do. Not just masks but visors and other PPE etc. None have sustained any brain damage.
They're not easy to work in in a hot and active environment, when your breathing and heart rate increases, but they're also there for a reason and needed to protect the people I work with. We had one person test positive, within a setting of about 35, everyone else tested negative despite being in close proximity (no choice) but the PPE did it's job and it didn't spread. That's what they're for. If that person, myself and the rest of my colleagues had 'just done me' we'd have faced a very different scenario.

Tonightstheteriyakichicken · 20/10/2020 09:45

If people not wearing masks at least tried staying 2m apart, it would feel less like they are making some kind of point.

How selfish can you be to get on a bus and not give a damn if you infect other people? Does it really take much to move the mask from your neck to your face?

Perhaps after a very short time these passengers panic when breathing with a mask covering their mouth and nose.
They may think they're not getting all the oxygen they need, and their carbon dioxide levels are rising.

Just to play devil's advocate, try saying to someone rigid with fear, getting into a lift, this fear is all in your head.

Mildly surprised you saw young people not bothering. Where I live it's usually middle-aged people I notice not wearing masks.

Youandmeareluckytobeus · 20/10/2020 09:47

@Minerva00
I haven't heard of the pee analogy before. Thanks for that. Perfect analogy.

@TheSeedsOfADream
You only have to put a mask on and a pulse oximeter on your finger to check that oxygen saturation does not fall when wearing a mask. Yes, you may feel as if you cannot breathe as easily but it really has been proven that you do not suffer oxygen deprivation when wearing a mask.

Dongdingdong · 20/10/2020 09:48

Then why bother wearing one around their necks?

Why are you surprised? Equally I could say that I’m “mildly surprised” that you saw middle aged people not bothering.

I’m sure there are people of all ages who don’t wear them for purely selfish reasons, but on this particular bus they were all young people who looked like they were coming home from school/college.

movingonup20 · 20/10/2020 10:00

Same here, but three young ladies all claiming to be under 12 yet were out without a parent wearing heavy makeup, strapless mini dresses and heels ... either they were lying about their age of the parents need to go on a parenting course about setting appropriate boundaries for age! Driver couldn't do anything because he's not allowed to question them (they had their school id which means they are entitled to child fare)

I'm ok with that. So we're all good. I'll be irrational and stupid and you can be virtue signalling and better than others.
Dongdingdong · 20/10/2020 10:06

I’d guess the young people I saw were aged 16-18, and they didn’t have anyone else with them. Perhaps if their mum or dad had been on the bus they’d have told them to put their masks on!

😂🤣🤭🤐
HappydaysArehere · 20/10/2020 10:20

The mask is to protect other people and gives a much lesser protection to the wearer. That is why those who choose not to wear them are selfish, ignorant idiots. There are visors for those who have issues which should lessen the impact on others. The only thing I would find excusable are those with real breathing difficulties. I don’t find wearing a mask easy and am relieved to take it off but unless we have solidarity with young and old this dire situation will continue.
