Wales lockdown, whos paying the wages??

For those businesses required to close are employers expected to pay their staff without trading? Are the self employed just expected to go unpaid?

I know non essential retail, hospitality, leisure and hairdressers have to close, but what about factories or construction sites , are they closed too?

Just trying to prepare myself financially in case when England follows suit.

This is on the gov.wales site tonight

Orangeblossom7777 · 19/10/2020 20:06

They said to work from home if you can so presumably those who can't will go to work in those areas mentioned.

In the main lockdown this was going to be the case too but everything shut and it became 'essential travel / work only'.

3littlewords · 19/10/2020 20:08

@Orangeblossom7777 my dh is self employed in the construction industry would he have to take the time off unpaid or are sites allowed to continue to be open?

It's alright! Looking at the Govt guidance, you can still have a haircut, pedicure and Botox. They are not showing factories to be shut down.

This seems very strange. It's almost as if they just wanted to make an announcement but with having very little different to England at the moment.

All they are basically saying is not to mix households. So, hairdressers, 20 customers a day, is not mixing households.

Jellykat · 19/10/2020 20:14

Various help available for businesses/ employers.
Bugger all for Self Employed (of which i am)

You're wrong RedDiamond, everything bar 'essential shops' are closing here in Wales!

Orangeblossom7777 · 19/10/2020 20:16

I'm not sure 2little, my DH is also self employed in manufacturing industry so also keeping fingers crossed this doesn't happen in UK.

I noticed here www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-54596783
Ireland also in lockdown but it mentions construction to continue

WTF are you reading?!

GirlCrush · 19/10/2020 20:29

whats closed in Wales?

noideaatallreally · 19/10/2020 20:32

Red Diamond that is not correct - "Can hairdressers and beauty salons stay open?

No. All close contact services including hairdressers, barbers, beauticians, tattooists, and sports and massage therapists are required to close."

whats closed in Wales?
Everything non-essential.
Orangeblossom7777 · 19/10/2020 20:46

Who is going to pay for this? Do they have an arrangement like the tier 3 areas? But it will cost lots more if everything is closing...

Orangeblossom7777 · 19/10/2020 20:49

Ok it sounds similar to tier 3 OP, in the UK, says can work (out of home) and just hospitality businesses closed not all...so it seems different from the original lockdown

Not surprised, it would cost a bomb

Jellykat · 19/10/2020 21:14

Harsher then Tier 3 Orangeblossom

Much harsher. Most secondary age kids can’t go to school. Non essential shops shut. All sports clubs and gyms.
Orangeblossom7777 · 19/10/2020 21:19

I am meaning in terms of work- places. For example manufacturing and construction stopped during the first lockdown. That does not seem to be the case this time. Looks like just financial support for hospitality similar to tier 3

guitarstringseadgbe · 19/10/2020 21:20

This all worries me sick. My husband works in construction and is self employed. We would be screwed if this happens here. How can they do this to people.

Orangeblossom7777 · 19/10/2020 21:20

I see-

"All leisure and non-essential retail will be closed. This includes clothes shops, furniture shops and car dealerships among many others. A full list of types of business required to close will be available in our guidance on business closures

Shops allowed to remain open include supermarkets and other food retailers, pharmacies, banks and post offices. However, wherever possible people should avoid unnecessary visits to these, and use alternative approaches such as online services and deliveries."

Orangeblossom7777 · 19/10/2020 21:21

I don't think they will guitarstrings I have no idea how they are funding it all.

I do hope you’re right. This constant threat of not being able to earn is horrendous.
Orangeblossom7777 · 19/10/2020 21:24

It's very stressful I know. We're the same.

Orangeblossom7777 · 19/10/2020 21:25

When the company DH works for was forced to close in the first lockdown (despite already having put in measures meaning 2m apart etc) they lost all their orders. It is only just picking up again since the summer.

waitingforadulthood · 19/10/2020 21:32

It's devastating, confusing and pointless, imo.

I'm self employed. Sort of essential. But even if I can work, my customers can't , and so can't afford my services. There's no money coming to me. There's no mortgage freeze guarantee this time. I may lose my home. I think I will 😔

Meanwhile my children are still in school, despite there being numerous positive cases in both their schools (but not in their "bubbles" , but the "bubble" data doesn't extend to the school bus- so the kids who tested positive were on the same school bus, but in a different class bubble, therefore my dc are "safe" )

People will end up destitute and suicidal. I may.

Same here, with 3 dc we are normally well under way with the Christmas presents by now but can't really bring myself to buy much with the prospect of more periods of no income ahead. Struggling to pay the mortgage and putting food on the table along with Christmas thrown in is a horrendous feeling as a parent. No one would argue that covid doesn't matter but the ramifications for many because of lockdowns and restrictions are far worse than any effect on covid.
