Does this mean DD can't leave the house for 14 days?

We just received this from DD's school:

"This evening we learnt that a member of staff who has had contact with your child’s class has tested positive for covid 19. As a result your child’s class will move to home learning from Monday 19th October for the remainder of this half term. Your child should not come into school tomorrow."

Does this mean she can't leave the house for 14 days now? The letter doesn't explain this.

It doesn’t say that - so I wouldn’t even be questioning it.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 18/10/2020 22:08

Yes. Your child will have to isolate as a contact of a positive case. The date this ends will be confirmed as it won't be 14 days from today. It will be 2 days prior to positive person becoming symptomatic.

Happyspud · 18/10/2020 22:09

@Dustballs, are you serious? Probably the school assumed you wouldn't need it spelt out OP as surely everyone knows that if you have been a contact of a positive case you have to isolate for 14 days.

@ThisMustBeMyDream

Thank you.That's very helpful.

Presumably if she's been told not to go to school it means she's considered a possible infection risk so to me that would mean she has to self isolate for 14 days, yes. Otherwise she could continue going to school.
I can't understand why contact and trace aren't on top of things like this, surely they should now be informing all close contacts of the person who has had the positive test and advising them what to do?

3littlewords · 18/10/2020 22:14

They should provide you with an official letter stating when she will need to isolate till. My DS was sent home Wed due to a positive result from a close contact adult the letter stated he needed to isolate until the 22nd (14 days after last contact)

Ecosse · 18/10/2020 22:16

No, she doesn’t have to isolate for 14 days unless she has been in close contact with the infected individual for an extended period.

DeadBod · 18/10/2020 22:16

You would think that the letter would explain what you need to do. It doesn't expressly say that she needs to isolate but this sort of situation does require it (dependent on how much contact the teacher has had with the pupils).

Actually it does need spelling out because its 14 days from last contact with the positive person not 14 days from positive result, so unless OP is fucking psychic it absolutely needs spelling out as the message does not specify who the positive person is or when her child was last in contact with said person 🙄

MushMonster · 18/10/2020 22:21

Yes, she will need to isolate. But the school should be giving you the date they will be back. Here they even sed a HT letter to all the years saying which year is in isolation and the dates they will be back.

Forgetaboutme · 18/10/2020 22:22

Track and trace will let you know if she has to isolate, not the school. The school are probably just quicker off the mark and getting the info out sooner. I would keep her in though regardless....just for a clear conscience.

StealthPolarBear · 18/10/2020 22:23

No, not unless told to

Firefliess · 18/10/2020 22:27

Sounds to me that this has only just happened and someone at the school has been tasked with getting this information out urgently in a Sunday evening to ensure the class don't come in tomorrow. The school will probably have more information about who has had close contact and needs to isolate for a fortnight tomorrow in the day when they've had a chance to talk to the right people and consult with track and trace. So keep her in til tomorrow and see what they say then.

notevenat20 · 18/10/2020 22:27

I guess this also means no one should come to the house either? (We are in trier 1.)

@Firefliess Yes I am sure you are right.

Ds was sent home from sixth form due to a student in a class he is in testing positive for covid. The whole class is out and he has to self isolate for 14 days.

The letter says

"We have been advised by Public Health England that there has been a confirmed case of COVID-19 within the college. We have followed the national guidance and have identified that your son/daughter has been in close contact with the affected student. In line with the national guidance your son/daughter must now stay at home and self-isolate and can return to college on Friday 23rd October."

They can only return to college on this date if they are well and not displaying any symptoms of covid.

Other members of the household can go about their normal activities as we haven't been in close contact.

Comefromaway · 18/10/2020 22:31

It depends whether your child came within 2 metres of them for 15 mins or more or 1 metre for 1 minute.

Comefromaway · 18/10/2020 22:33

My son’s piano teacher works for two local authorities. A child in his class at one school tested positive. At no point had he been within 2 metres of the child. One local authority told him he had to isolate, the other that he was able to continue working. The first local authority public health changed their mind after 3 days.

What is the rule about people coming to the house if your child is isolating?

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 18/10/2020 22:36

I presume the school has sent out a preemptive letter until they get specific details from PHE tomorrow then you should get further information.

dementedpixie · 18/10/2020 22:38

When was your dd last at school? It could be that the teacher didn't have contact with the class in the 2 days before symptoms but now they have been tested they can't come in to school to teach so the children need to stay home.

If your dd needs to isolate they should get precise information about what date isolation should end as its 14 days from contact not the test result date.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 18/10/2020 22:39

Do not assume Track and Trace will get in touch. They didn't with me regarding my ds who had to self isolate for 14 days due to a positive case in his class.

They cant! Unless they are in your usual support/childcare bubble however if your DD then later tested positive they would also need to isolate
ThisMustBeMyDream · 18/10/2020 22:54

Track and trace no longer have escalation for schools. The school takes advice from PHE and deals with it that way. Track and trace won't contact when it is a school case now.

I've had 3 children isolate and not once been contacted. I asked my manager at work as she does shifts as a contact tracer and she confirmed that schools aren't escalated to them now.
