It’s behind a paywall but you can read enough to get the gist!

It's the rare side effects that are often never known until something is rolled out to the public, and has been rolled out for a few months. If something occurs in one in 100,000 people who have the vaccine then the studies won't necessarily bring it to light. Studies of over 60,000 odd become completely unmanageable apparently. So I am not sure if, even if a vaccine took much longer in the process of development, the rare side effects would be identified before coming to market.

Yes, but rare side effects are, well, rare. Do people really worry about the 1/100,000 risks?

Inkpaperstars · 18/10/2020 23:42

Well, once they start to happen fear can spread if they are extreme and the low statistical chance can be hard for people to appreciate.

I am more aware than most since a close relative actually had one of these rare reactions, we don't know it was linked to a vaccine but it was something that has been linked to vaccines in some cases. That said, neither she or I are anti vaccine at all and we know these extreme complications are more often a consequence of the disease than the vaccine.

There will always be side effects with any medication. You'll never stop that completely. But to give up on the protection that can be offered because of the incredibly rare possibility of a serious side effect, and choose to keep on living the life we have now or take the greater risk of the worst effects of Covid? I just don't understand why anyone would choose that. I am 'extremely clinically vulnerable' and I can tell you I will be at the front of the queue with my arm held out ready for a vaccine. I am more than willing to risk its side effects rather than chance my arm with Covid or stay shielded for years to come.

They must do, as many people decided to take the real threat of measles to their children over the non existent threat of MMR causing autism. I find it baffling myself.

In deciding whether to have the vaccine, the balance of risks and benefits will depend on the age and health of the individual.

For a fit and healthy 20 year old woman the risks of the virus could well be less than the ( entirely hypothetical) 1 in 100,000 risk of a vaccine complication. I'm not saying they are, but that it's not cut and dried in all cases.
