Flu vaccinations in schools

Claire926 · 17/10/2020 12:51

The school I work at have scheduled the flu vaccinations for the children in December 2020. In relation to the current situation is anyone vaccinating their children?

It happens every year for over 5s. Mine is having hers done in Nov. Of course I am having her vaccinated. I do both my kids every year. Covid isn't a risk to kids....but flu is

clareykb · 17/10/2020 12:55

Yes and i do every year, my girls are asthmatic and often have croup so it's a no brainer. There are a very few reasons why it wouldn't be a good idea (eg parent having chemo etc) but in general it's a great idea

FatGirlShrinking · 17/10/2020 12:56

Yep, ours got it done on Tuesday at school. The flu nasal spray

WreckTangled · 17/10/2020 12:57

Mine had theirs yesterday. They're doing right up to year seven in schools this year.

Swingbin · 17/10/2020 12:58

TBH I don’t normally bother but I have put my youngest children forward for the vaccinations this year. My older child is a teenager, too old for the nasal spray and too young for the injection.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 17/10/2020 12:59

Mine has the nasal sprat every year. I'm not getting the jab myself though.

Deelish75 · 17/10/2020 13:03

DS (Yr7) is having his next week. DD (Yr1) is having it done first week in Nov. December seems quite late, it’s well into flu season by then.
It’s a nasal spray and both have had it in school before with no problems.

toptreeroots1 · 17/10/2020 13:10

I'm pregnant and have had the jab today
I don't usually get it
My four year old has nasal spray in school in December

Peak flu season is dec-March. Unfortunately some schools will be left until well into December this year due to the amount of children they're vaccinating plus the logistics of managing closed bubbles etc.
SvenandSven · 17/10/2020 13:18

My Ds 16 had his yesterday. He doesn't normally have it but his special school opened it up to everyone.

Castiel07 · 17/10/2020 13:21

We have had all ours done, my children who are at school had them done last week other then my sen child who had his done last month at his sen school.
No problems and I would rather have the jab then any of us get flu.

Char2015 · 17/10/2020 13:26

Has anyone else had a letter from the NHS with regards to their child saying that child must take letter in with them as it has a unique code? I don't normally receive such letter when they have the flu jab and one of them have been having the jab every year for the past 4 years.

FatGirlShrinking · 17/10/2020 13:28

We got that letter but it had the option to register them online in which case they didn't need to take the letter in.

We1shBird · 17/10/2020 13:29

Our Tesco are doing the jab from 12 years now. Previous years there were children caught between getting the nasal spray in school and being eligible for an adult jab.

MayFayre · 17/10/2020 13:33

I’m paying for mine (teenage) to have it over half term. Given how easily they’ve caught colds since being back at school I don’t want to take the risk of them having flu and missing more school. They’re having the vaccine rather than the nasal spray because it’s a lot cheaper.

Char2015 · 17/10/2020 13:34

Our letters don't give that option. That's probably a better way rather than expecting children to take the letters in.

The school hasn't sent any letters or mentioned the flu vaccination yet so I still have no idea when it's taking place there. NHS letter just mentions schools will let us know.

Nat6999 · 17/10/2020 13:35

Anyone with teenagers, ds has had the jab every year since being 13, he is my carer, can't have the nasal spray due to chronic nosebleeds.

kamchatka23 · 17/10/2020 13:46

My 17 year old is having his next Wednesday, he’s at sixth form in a SEN school. Permission form etc. was all done online as his school are completely paperless now.

AldiAisleofCrap · 17/10/2020 13:48

@Claire926 why on earth would you not even if there was no Covid? Sorry I don’t understand your post.

halcyondays · 17/10/2020 13:54

Teens aren’t too young for the injection, they can have it done at Boots etc. They just aren’t offered it on the NHS unless they have a health condition.

When mine were in primary, they sometimes didn’t get theirs done in school until December. Even in normal times it took a long time to get round them all I suppose.

wendz86 · 17/10/2020 14:57

Ours have them next week . The school told us we don’t need to take the letters in .

stclair · 17/10/2020 15:01

Nasal flu vaccine can be given up to age 18 unless they can’t have a live vaccine for whatever reason

Hibbetyhob · 17/10/2020 15:07

Mine have them next week. No idea what those letters are - we had them but then all normal paperwork from school anyway & school knew nothing about the letters.

MrsJonesAndMe · 17/10/2020 15:18

DS has had it done - first at the GPs surgery and then at school. This year it is scheduled for November.

AvoidingRealHumans · 17/10/2020 15:28

@Char2015 I got that letter, one each for both my boys.
I asked some of the other mums if they got the same letter and they didn't. I just concluded that it was because I don't usually let mine have the flu spray so they were trying to persuade me.
If yours normally get it then maybe its sent randomly to people?
