As with anyone my mental health is taking a battering and now Chris green said this on Twitter I won't be here this time next year if it goes on for years

They are both in tier three and the tiering system is designed to simplify the rules so everyone will find them easier to follow over the coming years. Off to a bad start...

DumplingsAndStew · 16/10/2020 21:57

Sorry, I'm not following... what has someone said on Twitter?

BlueBlancmange · 16/10/2020 21:58

Not really sure who Chris Green is, but it's not really what any one wants to read. Is he some one who is likely to know what the duration might be?

dollychopss · 16/10/2020 22:00

He is an MP that resigned ... but people are freaking out ... I don't believe in the conspiracy theories eg the great reset etc but surely this can't go on for years !

I struggle with anxiety and have done for years. The ups and downs of “pandemic” life means I was seriously struggling. No one knows how long it’s going to take to figure out how to manage it, if there will be a working vaccine and if the scientists do find a vaccine how long it will take to role out. But I’m certainly not a “herd immunity” believer either. It could be months it could be years, no one knows.
What I have found for me staying clear of SM like twitter and limiting myself to how long to watch the news for helps.

Treesofwood · 16/10/2020 22:03

The Great Reset is not a conspiracy theory?

BlueBlancmange · 16/10/2020 22:04

Oh ok, I've just looked him up and seen he resigned because he doesn't agree with the restrictions. This will be his motive for saying this is all going to go on for years.

Even the plague didn't go on For years. Just take one day at a time, don't look too far ahead. This will be history one day

BlueBlancmange · 16/10/2020 22:11

I hope not. I am optimistic that science will come to the rescue. I feel hopeful things will start to improve from early next year.

dollychopss · 16/10/2020 22:12

People won't comply for many more months let alone years !

OP posts:
Lindy2 · 16/10/2020 22:15

Well he sounds like a bit of an idiot and a stirrer OP so it's probably beneficial he's resigned.

This won't go on forever, you won't be in tier 3 forever, particularly if people get on and stick to the restrictions rather than fight everything. Keep yourself as safe as you can and take one day at a time.

Figgygal · 16/10/2020 22:19

Even the head of vaccine studies said on radio 5 live this week IF they succeed in a vaccine it’ll be the back end of next year before we get any sense of normality

I think we all have to be realistic that what we had Pre March is gone for the forseeable and find ways to live in the meantime

This is unduly negative. Head of Oxford vaccine said will need masks till July (if all goes to plan which looks promising).

It absolutely won’t go on like this for years OP. It’s horrible, I’m struggling too, but hang in there, we have done probably the worst stretch already as even in this new wave we are in a better position to treat people etc. Just get through the winter and it will look better come early 2021.

Racoonworld · 16/10/2020 22:32

No it won’t go on for years. Scientists predicting that with a vaccine it will likely go on in till July. That’s less than a year. And to the pp who said we need to find ways to live in the meantime, yes that’s what I’m doing, I’m carrying on seeing my family like normal as that’s how I can live until this ends.

ApplesinmyPocket · 16/10/2020 22:58

It won't go on for years. As a PP said, even the Great Plague didn't. Humans around the world get serious troubles in their lifetimes sometimes - terrible wars, famines - and this for now is ours, but it won't be forever.

Stay off MN, the drama gets ramped up here and people seem to love doom and gloom and frightening each other and themselves. Find other things to do. I stopped watching the news months ago, what you really need to know filters down somehow. If you must read MN, stick to the lighthearted stuff. There's still companionship and humour and general chat going on here, lots of it!

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 16/10/2020 23:04

Next spring we will be over winter virus season for a start.
I remember swine flu becoming less dangerous as time went on.
And politicians have things going on in the background so I take their utterances with a huge pinch of salt.

Take care of yourself op.

TooTrueToBeGood · 16/10/2020 23:09

So do you believe will go on for years ?

That is inevitable, and people need to get used to it. A vaccine might be developed in the next 6 - 12 months but even then they are not going to be able to immunise everyone overnight. It will take a long time for the wealthy nations to roll out a vaccine across their own communities and poorer countries will simply not have the funds or healthcare infrastructure to do much more than scratch the surface.

And how many years does your crystal ball tell you? 5, 10, 20, 50?

If you disagree with my opinion why not try and conduct yourself like a mature adult and have a discussion instead of throwing out veiled insults?

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 16/10/2020 23:17

OP this won't go on for years. It's going to be ok. I know this has been impossibly hard but there is lots of hope.

Massive progress has been made with a vaccine. There are actually lots of vaccines being trialled and so much money and expertise is being thrown into that. We are likely going to see vaccines happening early on in new year and yes, it will go to certain groups first but that will still help. This virus mostly kills the very old and very frail - if you can get them and healthcare workers vaccinated, the death toll will drop hugely. The virus suddenly won't have the same sting. Every few months more down the line we get with this, the more treatment options there will be. In a few short months, medics have worked out how to keep much larger numbers alive.

What was your summer like? Hopefully you managed to get out a bit more? I had a couple of UK breaks and they were different but I actually had a really lovely time. We know now that in summer it is possible for people to have more freedom - mixing outdoors for one is low risk. So even if it was bad news with a vaccine (which it isn't), there is hope there too.

You have every right to be struggling but if you can tick off the days on a chart for now and just get through these next few months, life is going to get better. I promise. There is going to come a day where we look back and go 'wow that was tough' but it will feel like a distant memory. Is there anyone you can reach out to in real life and have a proper chat to about this? Do you have things in your day to day life that distract you? I'm a huge one for knitting - it's really good for my mental health to immerse myself in something and see a project grow.

You can do this. Just one day at a time. And have a think about the things you'd like to do when life is more normal again. I want to go on a walking holiday and take dance classes.

TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 16/10/2020 23:18

Numbers ill would drop rapidly once a chunk of front line staff and the elderly have been immunised though. Combine that together with those who have had it carrying forward some sort of immunity.

I think it's wrong to imagine we will be at the same level of restrictions " for years."

For most younger people it is already an asymptomatic infection.

DilemmaDerby · 16/10/2020 23:19

Listen, it’s a virus and viruses have existed forever. The WHO is saying deaths from infections are 80% lower than the first wave. A lot of the deaths reported are “with” Covid not from it.

Forget the vaccine or this thing going away, lockdowns are only for the NHS which isn’t built for this.We will get better at treatments, the NHS will reorganise for be able to cope, their fears are because of lessened capacity due to increased need for infection control.

The system will right itself and we will just get used to living with it as we have the flu, Noor iris and many other viruses.

I can’t say everything will be back to “normal” as it will be a new normal. Look on the bright side, maybe people will start to prioritise loved ones over things? Have more flexible working as we’ve proven we can do it, and spend more time on the things they enjoy. Maybe people will take better care of their health? Maybe we will respect food security and sustainability more and start to few more linked to nature and the food it grants us? Maybe people will feel better connected to their local communities?

Maybe the world will come out not “normal” but better?

Seek the positives, live the life you are living not the wider world. Switch off the news, delete social media, connect with what you can see, hear, touch, actual life and take care of yourself Flowers

Well it might be better not to come on and try to further scare some one who is clearly already struggling, by trying to present your mere speculation as fact.

Your speculation (as per your first post on this thread) is no more relevant than mine just because you are erring on the side of blind optimism. So before you start making childish comments about crystal balls perhaps reflect on the validity of your own opinions. If the OP is anxious then that is a shame but I'm not going to change my views or be silenced just to give her a false sense of hope.

It's about so much more than just the OP and her feelings anyway. One of the reasons why we are steamrolling into a second wave is because so many people refuse to take the pandemic seriously and are willfully ignoring the guidance. People like you spreading completely baseless positivity only make that worse.
