Essential travel only advised - can I still go on holiday to the Canaries?

Travel to the canaries is currently advised as Essential Travel Only.

Can I still go on holiday though if I isolate on my return? How does anyone know if my travel is essential and who decides what constitutes essential?

Do you really need to ask?

NaturalLight · 16/10/2020 19:01

I’m sure your travel insurance will decide if anything goes wrong!

AreYouThere · 16/10/2020 19:02

Of course not. A holiday is not essential

PurBal · 16/10/2020 19:03

No. But do what you will. DH ended up in hospital on our last holiday. So I wouldn't risk incalidating my insurance.

Bumble84 · 16/10/2020 19:03

Essential is something like death/severe illness of close family member. Certain business trips etc. Not a holiday, but I suspect you know that.

You’d also be travelling with void insurance, assuming you have it in the first place.

Racoonworld · 16/10/2020 19:04

No it’s not essential so is advised against. But the key word is advised.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 16/10/2020 19:05

We have essential travel into Canada too. They aren’t allowing people in to see dying relatives.

Not sure a beach hol could ever be essential.

CrunchyNutNC · 16/10/2020 19:06

If your holiday might be deemed to be essential (which you presumably believe it might as you've asked), what then would be non-essential travel? I genuinely can't think of anything less essential than going to a place for a holiday.

noodlmcdoodl · 16/10/2020 19:08

The issue for me would be the travel insurance (or potential invalidation of). There are several providers who will cover you in these circumstances. Battleface being one.

Matilda2013 · 16/10/2020 19:09

Can they stop you going though if non-essential? Jet2 have changed their insurance policy to include cover of you're advised against non essential travel. I've got a holiday booked for December to tenerife so don't know what will happen if they start going again.

Allywill · 16/10/2020 19:21

The canaries cover COVID insurance (medical expenses) via their government for visitors. You would not need your own travel insurance to cover you for medical expenses, repatriation or extension of stay due to COVID.

I think you can go so long as you self-isolate on return. Don't think they will stop you and they have got much less cases than here. If you're flight's not cancelled you won't get the money back.

ChaChaCha2012 · 16/10/2020 19:28

Yes, you can still go on holiday. Insurance cover is available via Staysure, Battleface, Travel Nomads I believe too. Interesting to look into the cover posted by Allywill also.

NaturalLight · 16/10/2020 19:34

Yes you may be covered if you get Covid as posted by a
allywill- but that wouldn’t cover you for a car accident. You really need to think about insurance

TheGirlWithAPrince · 16/10/2020 19:49

yes you are able to travel as its only an Advisory

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/10/2020 20:01

It is not illegal. So yes, you can travel. The key word is "advised."

JuliaJohnston · 16/10/2020 20:04

These threads 😂

Dowser · 16/10/2020 20:07

I’m going tomorrow
Yayy
Can’t wait
So excited

Oaktree55 · 16/10/2020 20:20

Yes of course you can go. You won’t be covered by most travel insurance companies though but there are one or two niche insurers that will cover you. I’m an absolute stickler for rules but being scientific about it there’s no reason I personally think not to go if you behave sensibly and quarantine on return. Morally I wouldn’t travel to a country and risk taking virus there if I thought there was any possibility I was infected though.

Dowser · 16/10/2020 20:39

On the Tenerife forum
Here’s loads travelling there
It’s only the flight companies that are holding them gack

Dowser · 16/10/2020 20:39

Snog · 16/10/2020 22:07

I see so effectively I can make up my own mind as to whether to go and it's all legal as long as I self isolate on return.

OP posts:
Aragog · 16/10/2020 22:32

Its legal to go.

In Scotland when they did the lockdown for central Scotland this was mentioned - holidays could still go ahead.

My insurance wouldn't pay out if I cancelled when legally I could go away. As it happens I now can't go away as I tested positive this week and my SI (and dh's) goes into half term. Our annual insurance covers is.

Brighterthansunflowers · 16/10/2020 22:53

A holiday is not bloody essential

TildaKauskumholm · 16/10/2020 22:56

I suggest you look up the word essential.
